All i see here is a man who likes attention. What better way to get more of it, then to invite a controversial person to a conferende. "I like him because he sings, he sings badly". That joke together with the comments on Warrens reading of theologians works, is an attempt to make him seem trustworthy and familiar. Piper avoids tougher issues such as: Why do you quote "The Message" in your book?

I am saddened to see that Dr. Piper is not warning heretic R. Warren. Rick Warren does not preach truth nor the gospel. He is an emotional speaker that walks behind the steps of the faith false preachers and as such he should be reproved.

I can't stand the hatred towards Warren. Both him and Piper preach the cross. Piper uses big words, gets very theological, and appeals to intellect. Warren is straight forward, pragmatic, and appeals to the simple folk. God uses both. Neither are heretic. I don't care if Warren's Calvinist or Arminian, he's Christian and he is our brother in Christ, I firmly believe that. As does Piper and Driscoll.

Maybe I exaggerated a bit, but anyways. Remember that God is in complete control, and I'm sure John Piper hasn't changed any of his views.

So I'd say, this has got something to do with what God might do to Rick Warren. Maybe he will repent.

Unfortunately, some people might get it wrong and start following Rick Warren, but I believe it's NOT the intention of John.

A book written to self-prosperity... Macarthur has a great video deeply criticizing the book and I think he's completely right. O i see what Piper wants. This is a smart move, its a chance to put Warren on the spot, so he can confess what he believes in the presence of the reformed christians. Hopefully he'll be corrected. He claimed to have studied Jonathan Edwards, lets see if thats real or not. I saw Mark Driscoll changed, and probably because of Piper, and that was awesome.

Paul said not to compare ourselves to others. We are to compare ourselves to God and His standard. Realize that we fall so far short! Christ bore the punishment we deserved so we could be redeemed. God is not going to compare your life to the average church-goer and judge you on that basis. I too like to enjoy God's creation, but we are also called to fellowship with other believers and that fellowship is based on truth, not experience. We need to see Christ in others.

When I invited my father to "church", he said he didn't want to go because there were too many hypocrites there. I said, "Yeah, you are right and we don't need anymore so you better stay home." In took a few years but he is know a redeemed hypocrite who goes to "church" to see Christ in others, and not the flesh.

You don't like others being "judgmental" but are you not doing the same?  It seems you are judging those that do not want to "forsake the assembling of ourselves"

@37enjoylife No, Johnny Cash was a warrior of the Gospel. By the way the churches are overflowing, not decreasing as you say. The mega churches boast 50 to two hundred thousand members, so in that sense, the churches are growing.

Jesus hung the Pharisees out to dry by calling them a den of vipers, but oh, Jesus wasn't being seeker sensitive as you would like.

I have no problem with Ozzie Osborn but do have a problem with men who distort the gospel. I guess the gospel means nothing to you.

@37enjoylife It's not that Rick Warren doesn't fit my way of thinking, he is an enemy of the Gospel, not just another man with a different opinion. He has distorted the gospel of grace. Why not invite Ossie Osborn to speak, after all, he's another person with his own belief system.

Paul says NOT to allow an enemy of the Gospel to speak in the house/church, so John Piper might as well be sharing the stage with Ozzie Osborn because both men are enemies of the gospel.

@joeystockdale The answer to your question is Matthew 13:20-21 - As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away.

It's not the amount of times you go to church or the curriculum of a school that make you a Christian. Never was.

In regards to John Piper inviting Rick Warren to be a speaker at the Desiring God Conference 2010, we have to remember that John Piper has incredible wisdom, and perhaps Rick Warren has been convicted by the Holy Spirit of some of his statements, and has repented of them. We'll just have to give Pastor John Piper the benefit of the doubt for the time being.
