  • Yikes... worst version ever recorded...

  • You are right!! This is Joan and not Jewel although both names start with a J..... I'll give you that!

  • Two women that are fine Melisa is much more delicious....

  • very poor cover.....very odd!!

  • I agree. Joan Armatrading does own this. No other singer can do it justice.

  • AWESOME!

  • you're right joan owns this song, but nice try.

  • wats with the bloody still frames

  • My $.02-Dissing is a disease. Some in youtubespace need to try to figure out why they feel the need to hate so much. We will all be better for it, and you will be much happier and more pleasant to be around.

Regardless, a great song well done by two talented singers here, but Joan's versions (2/15/1979 and Live2007) are as powerful as any love song ever performed. I believe that no one can reveal the true emotion of the piece better than the creator of it, especially in this case.

  • Wow! What a debate! Jewel and Melissa's version was my first experience of this song being that I was still in high school at the time. It really got me, I can still remember going out ( Yes, to a store ) and buying The Best of Joan Armatrading on CD. I love Poetry Man too!!

  • i prefer def leppards version

  • bigpinkears... Etheridge's pitch is questionable... very weak voice... it is really not a matter of taste alone... she sings this like a rocker.. the song is lost ... completely... indeed, if I heard someone do a great version, I would give them the credit they deserve... the question is... why call someone names when they state the obvious? if if you disagree?

  • Joan owns this song, but I'm open to a little persuasion from Jewel.

  • I'm sorry@ independentguy23,....

Joan wrote a great song. But Melissa performs it a million times better!!!

  • Where can I buy this track?

  • She sounds like she is trying to immitate Joan.

  • try this one, toni childs "dont walk away", not a love song but has amounts of feeling, one of my favs.

  • your right on that one, gives it a good go though.

  • Joan Armadrading does own this song. But that doesn't mean Melissa,Jewel and the other performers involved didn't do a terriffic cover here. Loved it!

  • If Joan Armatrading and Melissa did this together, it would so much better. Not that this is bad. It's very good.

  • WHO writes these dumbass rules that if you love one version you have to hate another? I think she does a great job.

  • And I thought Joan Armatrading's version was awesome! This is even better.

  • Perfect homage to the sublime perfection of Joan Armatrading--Melissa doesn't try and take it anywhere that it doesn't belong. She pretty much imitates Joan. If I had to choose only one song in the world to listen to for eternity, it would be this one...sung by Joan Armatrading. I have loved this song since she sang it on the 2nd season of Saturday Night LIve.

  • pap

  • I'm sorry but I sooo prefer Joan, YUCK! just my opinion....

  • Not even close......you are right.......Joan Armatrading owns this.

  • Great song well done.

Do see Joan Armatrading's version Unforgettable.

  • you aint joan....

  • bloody tragedy....Why cover what Joan rules???

  • True

  • this was in L word !!!! TIBETTE SCENE XD I remember !!! Love it *_*

  • @ShaaariOC What season? =O don't remember xD

  • Season 5, the episode when Tina and Better made had sex.

  • It's funny. I forget everyone except Paula Cole on this track. Thanks for posting.

  • Vabbè...diciamo decente..ma la differenza tra questa versione e quella di Joan...è la stessa che passa tra il profumo di un fiore e il profumo di laboratorio.....:-)

  • They are not Joan, They can't capture her phrasing, so they had to do their own thing.

    Decent, but NOT Joan.

  • I like it, it may not always be really good, if you really listen to their voices, but you can feel the love and you can feel they mean it...

    I really love it...

  • such a beautifull song I Love it

  • i love it...love that its all over the place, like they didnt rehearse...just came out and jammed it out!!! and its live!! wicked!!

  • exactly! That's why I like it..

@ Goldenrod2: you have something against lesbians?

  • well i actually liked this, i dunno what youse are on about

  • I thinbk this is very good

  • eh I think its ok,

not ganna be a favorite but not bad.

  • I guess it's all a matter of personal taste. I read some comments and thought this would be really bad but good thing I listened to the music and not the comments. I love Joan Armatrading and I think Melissa's portion is a fantastic, powerful cover from someone else (Melissa) who obviously is a big fan of Joan's. I like Jewel's music a lot but she arguably was not the right person to accompany Melissa, but overall this was a really good cover.

  • come on ladies go ahead and ruin your own material.

  • although Jewel is awful. that is true

  • first of all, I was commenting on Etheridge, not Jewel. second of all, Etheridge is country-rock and Armatrading did both blues and pop when this song came out. there is no way in hell they could ever sound the same. thirdly, in the tradition of covers, Etheridge took the song and gave it another sound. Not all change is bad. Get your ass out of the past James

  • Please....................................... How highly inappropriate. These women are just trying too much. They sound like ducks undergoing a rectal examination.

  • so true. I just heard the original by Joan. In comparison this is almost painful to listen to. what a mess. The song needs some artful understatement.

  • Joan alone

    duct tape the rest

    tis was a clusterfuck

  • We have a saying in the UK that goes something like this "YOu cant dim a diamond and you cant polish a turd"

    ..... I say these Ladies shine! :-)

  • shocking version. my ears are bleeding.

  • what horrible shit.

  • it's so nice to hear a decent cover of one of Joan's songs

  • Go see an ear doctor.

  • please show this video

  • It will never touch JA's version, but I don't hate it.

  • Sorry guys. But Joan Armatrading owns this.

  • YES SHE DOES!

  • @independentguy23

    very true words

I'm only at 2 minutes and who ever she is who is singing this great song has wreck it for me I got to go now because this singer has little talent. omg yuck

  • @independentguy23 Of course she does! But imitation is the best form of flattery. It's a tribute to her actually . . . nothing usually compares to most originals unless your Tina or Ronstadt.

  • @independentguy23 100%...and I like Jewel and ADORE Melissa Etheridge!

  • @independentguy23

You are right and there is nothing much else to say!

Jewel does a good job but it is and always will be Armatrading's song!

  • Someone have this video ?

VH1 Duets Melissa Etheridge (Jewel, Joan Osborne, Sophy B Hawkins)

  • I'm looking for this too!

  • This isnt so bad as some may think.

  • actually, I think it might be.

  • WTF are babbling on about!?! You are one ignorant ass. The sad part is, you don't know what you are talking about.

    A bit paranoid are you?!?

You need to get your meds raised!!

  • God, I love when she does Armatrading. If Joan won't come out... her songs will. Melissa can cover all her stuff. She is just an amazing performer.

I like that she has Jewel with her. She's got a great set of pipes too.

    SpeakTruer

  • I love their voice combos. They have impeccable time, great balance and clear tone. What more could a person want? Love it

  • Etheridge is certainly every bit as good a singer as Armatrading. It's all a matter of individual taste. Both singers are great. Why be a douche about this version, that version... They are both very good in their own ways.

  • @bigpinkears No. I absolutely disagree. I like Etheridge and Jewel. As songwriters and performing artist. But this version is a horrible mess. It lacks any artistic taste and yes, Armatrading owns it. You listen to this after you listened to Armatrading and you either laugh or cringe.

  • @bigpinkears Not quite. This is not just a question of technique and vocal power but essentially about artistic choices in the interpretation of a song. And there Etheridge is clearly inferior to Armatrading. This cover is actually quite bad. It simply misunderstands the song.

  • I didn't think so. I think it's a great cover. Although, Joan has an amazing voice. I love her music.

  • @omnivorous65 Don't be silly. I think you suffer from what many other people do when they hear a cover. They only want to compare it to the original instead of letting the song stand on its own merit. This is a great song/cover. Honestly, the only weak point would be Jewel's lead, which isn't bad - it's just not as strong as ME's, Joan Osborne's and Paula's. Oddly enough, Jewel seems to get top billing on this video...

  • @oneazariah No, you are mistaken. I love covers. But there are three conditions 1. The interpreter has simply a better voice. 2. Someone makes you hear a song in a novel way and you start appreciating the material in new ways, or you simply discover a song that you did not like that much in the first place. Think: Cowboy Junkies. 3. The singer makes a song her or his own in a unique way. Nina Simone or Billie Holiday. THIS fails an all accounts. It's cringeworthy and uninspired.

  • this is a fantastic version of a fantastic song many of you couldnt pull that off so shut the fuck up children

  • Comment removed

  • Now, come on. You know that is a little too harsh. There are many other people who do nothing with their lives. You can't say that about two musicians who are relatively good in their hearts.

  • melissa etheridge is a breast cancer survivor; if that means you're useless, i'm the lowest piece of shit on the earth.

it's music, it's a cover, for christ sake, just because you don't like it, it doesn't , mean you can call them useless. and if you want to put something down, get your facts straight; five people are singing in this cover.

  • if it makes you feel better, ok then, the other 3 are useless as well. guilt by association. p.s. breast cancer has nothing to do with shitty music.

  • i think ME is covering this great.. but why all the pics of jewel? huh? should have pics of ME.

  • you should hear the etheridge and sophie b hawkins "damn i wish I was your lover"- it is way worse...but you just don't f with armatrading!

  • Damn right!!!!

  • Is that really Jewel? Of course I can pick ME's voice but that other voice..oh hang on yes NOW I can hear Jewel. My reaction to this is mixed. (That is the most negative I'm prepared to be about my beloved Melissa.

  • Why do most female singers these days sound like they're on the toilet? Each one trying to out do the other with so called emotional improvisation! JA was so restrained and tender. And what is the drummer doing? He sounds like animal from the Muppets. A caterwaul.

  • Well said...

File under "How to murder a classic"

Sounds like Bonnie Tyler undergoing colonic irrigation..OUCH!!!

  • look for a jessica simpson/Jewel duet of a Jewel song. that's the epitome of what you're talking about. JS's vocals are so out there it's painful to watch. I only heard the performance once because it destroyed my inner ear bones on the first go.

  • Joan Armaplating wrote the song and sang it sublimely. These guys just did not get the song at all they gave it as as much soul as yes..... a dogs jobbie.

  • **Joan Armatrading

  • Oh sorry of course I meant Joan Armatrading stamp. Silly me.

  • I would rather stand on a dogs jobbie and walk it over my new hall carpet than hear this version again. A dogs fucking jobbie!!!

  • Another classic ruined!

  • The question is, is she performong it purely for commercial reasons or because she is touched be the song because if she is fair play to her. As bad as it is!

  • \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

  • Oh dear??????? What the fuck is this??????

    Slaughtered it!

  • Joan ought to bitchslap them for raping her song.

  • that's not a cover, they didn't change a thing about the song. and joan armatrading's voice is So much better!

they shouldn't have done that, it's embarrassing.

  • Creo que se carga la canción.

  • joans version is the aston Martin this is the rusty dump truck!

  • there used to be a live video of this song on here that showed all of the girls and sophie b. playing bongos in the background! anyone know where it went?

  • i am so glad someone is paying tribute to joan armatrading. but i still like ms.armatrading's better.

  • i agree. anyone making an effort to sing a classic deserves a pat on the back.

  • I'd suck the gas out of her ass anytime.

  • totally agree with you total shit version!!

  • Well compared to Joan's , this is some utter crap !

  • love it but Joan did it best

  • Nothing wrong with being a dyke MidlandNinja

  • sounds like a breeder

  • Jewel is fit as

  • I love this version people are too critical, don't listen to it then.

  • ?!

    All around the world.

Cosmetic and sex industry - wish I owned one percent without blushing.

    Might not even blush?

    Puke and blush perhaps,

    at my own hypocrisy.

At the time Armatrading brought this song out, it felt so tender and strong and sincere, and every word she sang sounded like a lover´s prayer to me, and in an amazingly down-to-earth way.

    Goodness bless her.

  • This is one song that I think only Joan Armatrading can do as it's meant to be sung. Still, a decent version.

  • I adore it

  • JEW~ell however..........ick on here.

her voice + sensibilities do NOT match the energy of this song.

  • perfectly said!

  • really ?

i thought mellissa's voice sounded really good covering this. enuff her OWN sound, but also paying triBute to Joan's sound!

  • Yikes! What a mess! I guess they gave it a good shot and tried to pay tribute, but THIS AIN'T NO JOAN!!! Somebody trying to cover a JA song should just walk away--what's the point?

  • This is nice but it really does lack the dignity and pure emotion of Joan singing it. Joan Armatrading has a very rare quality that can really move you.

  • Melissa Etheridge makes me sick. Listen to Joan Armatrading singing the original.

  • abso freakin lutely.. I saw Joan with Eric Clapton and Bob Dylan, Graham Parker and the Rumour, etc in 1978 Blackbush aerodrome. Joan is a true original, and her stuff holds up as fresh today as it was 30 years ago. Melissa's like a female Meatloaf, lots of power and attitude, but basically they both sing like Cher...

  • and I'm talking about Joan Armatrading, not Joan Osbourne...

  • DAMN MELISSA IS THE SHITT!!!

  • nice try but no-one beats joan!

  • im sorry but this does not do it for me... Joan Armatradings version is and always will be the best.

  • it's Armatrading, not armstrong.

  • I stand corrected. I have listen to Joan Armatrading's version and I still say Sheena Easton's version is far superior. Joan Armatrading's was good however.

  • well I've never heard Easton's version of it. I only knew that you had the wrong last name for Joan! lol. if not for her the song wouldn't be, ya know?

  • sorry but no one can top joan's version, the actual heart and soul she puts into the song is unreal. in my opinion joans version is the ultimate love song and im sure it can make anyone feel good inside... this verrsion is nothing on it and neither is eastons.

  • Listen to Joan Armatrading here on youtube ... the original version, and one of the greatest voices ever.

  • LOVE IT

  • You didn't answer my question!

  • Yes its all Melissa until until 1:52 ... the other women were really only doing backups .. I believe Paula Cole and Jewel both did this song with her on stage, than Jewel came on louder at end. I only saw the special when it was on VH-1 and it was awesome. If you can find it, you will love it. Especially when they do "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover".

  • that's better. Thanks!

  • It's mostly Melissa , Joan osbourne, Paula Cole and Jewel each sing a stanza at 3:28, 3:48 and 4:06 respectively, Sophie B Hawkins also sang backup and chorus. Used to have a recording of that special, lost it. This was definitely a great show.!!

  • I always thought the woman singing all the way throguh this version was Etheridge, and that Jewel only came in at the end. Am I mistaken?

  • It's Melissa Etheridge, Jewel, Joan Osborne, Paula Cole, and Sophie B. Hawkins. It's the finale of a VH1 Duets concert.

  • This is when Jewel was cool. She needs to get back to this sort of thing.

  • Does anyone know where the video is? It's from a show called VH1 Duets and it's from November 1995. It was the first time I ever saw Jewel perform. It's an awesome show!

  • If you find it .. please share!! *lol*

Have been searching for that one for ages!

  • Cool!!

  • A very good version of a classic Joan Armatrading tune.

    Thanks.
