My $.02-Dissing is a disease. Some in youtubespace need to try to figure out why they feel the need to hate so much. We will all be better for it, and you will be much happier and more pleasant to be around.
Regardless, a great song well done by two talented singers here, but Joan's versions (2/15/1979 and Live2007) are as powerful as any love song ever performed. I believe that no one can reveal the true emotion of the piece better than the creator of it, especially in this case.
Wow! What a debate! Jewel and Melissa's version was my first experience of this song being that I was still in high school at the time. It really got me, I can still remember going out ( Yes, to a store ) and buying The Best of Joan Armatrading on CD. I love Poetry Man too!!
bigpinkears... Etheridge's pitch is questionable... very weak voice... it is really not a matter of taste alone... she sings this like a rocker.. the song is lost ... completely... indeed, if I heard someone do a great version, I would give them the credit they deserve... the question is... why call someone names when they state the obvious? if if you disagree?
Joan Armadrading does own this song. But that doesn't mean Melissa,Jewel and the other performers involved didn't do a terriffic cover here. Loved it!
Perfect homage to the sublime perfection of Joan Armatrading--Melissa doesn't try and take it anywhere that it doesn't belong. She pretty much imitates Joan. If I had to choose only one song in the world to listen to for eternity, it would be this one...sung by Joan Armatrading. I have loved this song since she sang it on the 2nd season of Saturday Night LIve.
Vabbè...diciamo decente..ma la differenza tra questa versione e quella di Joan...è la stessa che passa tra il profumo di un fiore e il profumo di laboratorio.....:-)

You cannot be serious. They are all over the place. This is so bad it is funny. I visit this side occasionally just to crack up. And I actually like Jewel.
I guess it's all a matter of personal taste. I read some comments and thought this would be really bad but good thing I listened to the music and not the comments. I love Joan Armatrading and I think Melissa's portion is a fantastic, powerful cover from someone else (Melissa) who obviously is a big fan of Joan's. I like Jewel's music a lot but she arguably was not the right person to accompany Melissa, but overall this was a really good cover.
first of all, I was commenting on Etheridge, not Jewel. second of all, Etheridge is country-rock and Armatrading did both blues and pop when this song came out. there is no way in hell they could ever sound the same. thirdly, in the tradition of covers, Etheridge took the song and gave it another sound. Not all change is bad. Get your ass out of the past James
Please....................................... How highly inappropriate. These women are just trying too much. They sound like ducks undergoing a rectal examination.
so true. I just heard the original by Joan. In comparison this is almost painful to listen to. what a mess. The song needs some artful understatement.
I'm only at 2 minutes and who ever she is who is singing this great song has wreck it for me I got to go now because this singer has little talent. omg yuck
@independentguy23 Of course she does! But imitation is the best form of flattery. It's a tribute to her actually . . . nothing usually compares to most originals unless your Tina or Ronstadt.
Etheridge is certainly every bit as good a singer as Armatrading. It's all a matter of individual taste. Both singers are great. Why be a douche about this version, that version... They are both very good in their own ways.
@bigpinkears No. I absolutely disagree. I like Etheridge and Jewel. As songwriters and performing artist. But this version is a horrible mess. It lacks any artistic taste and yes, Armatrading owns it. You listen to this after you listened to Armatrading and you either laugh or cringe.
@bigpinkears Not quite. This is not just a question of technique and vocal power but essentially about artistic choices in the interpretation of a song. And there Etheridge is clearly inferior to Armatrading. This cover is actually quite bad. It simply misunderstands the song.
@omnivorous65 Don't be silly. I think you suffer from what many other people do when they hear a cover. They only want to compare it to the original instead of letting the song stand on its own merit. This is a great song/cover. Honestly, the only weak point would be Jewel's lead, which isn't bad - it's just not as strong as ME's, Joan Osborne's and Paula's. Oddly enough, Jewel seems to get top billing on this video...
@oneazariah No, you are mistaken. I love covers. But there are three conditions 1. The interpreter has simply a better voice. 2. Someone makes you hear a song in a novel way and you start appreciating the material in new ways, or you simply discover a song that you did not like that much in the first place. Think: Cowboy Junkies. 3. The singer makes a song her or his own in a unique way. Nina Simone or Billie Holiday. THIS fails an all accounts. It's cringeworthy and uninspired.
Now, come on. You know that is a little too harsh. There are many other people who do nothing with their lives. You can't say that about two musicians who are relatively good in their hearts.
melissa etheridge is a breast cancer survivor; if that means you're useless, i'm the lowest piece of shit on the earth.
it's music, it's a cover, for christ sake, just because you don't like it, it doesn't , mean you can call them useless. and if you want to put something down, get your facts straight; five people are singing in this cover.
Is that really Jewel? Of course I can pick ME's voice but that other voice..oh hang on yes NOW I can hear Jewel. My reaction to this is mixed. (That is the most negative I'm prepared to be about my beloved Melissa.
Why do most female singers these days sound like they're on the toilet? Each one trying to out do the other with so called emotional improvisation! JA was so restrained and tender. And what is the drummer doing? He sounds like animal from the Muppets. A caterwaul.

well I've never heard Easton's version of it. I only knew that you had the wrong last name for Joan! lol. if not for her the song wouldn't be, ya know?
sorry but no one can top joan's version, the actual heart and soul she puts into the song is unreal. in my opinion joans version is the ultimate love song and im sure it can make anyone feel good inside... this verrsion is nothing on it and neither is eastons.
Yes its all Melissa until until 1:52 ... the other women were really only doing backups .. I believe Paula Cole and Jewel both did this song with her on stage, than Jewel came on louder at end. I only saw the special when it was on VH-1 and it was awesome. If you can find it, you will love it. Especially when they do "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover".
It's mostly Melissa , Joan osbourne, Paula Cole and Jewel each sing a stanza at 3:28, 3:48 and 4:06 respectively, Sophie B Hawkins also sang backup and chorus. Used to have a recording of that special, lost it. This was definitely a great show.!!
Does anyone know where the video is? It's from a show called VH1 Duets and it's from November 1995. It was the first time I ever saw Jewel perform. It's an awesome show!
Yikes... worst version ever recorded...

sorry but no one can top joan's version, the actual heart and soul she puts into the song is unreal. in my opinion joans version is the ultimate love song and im sure it can make anyone feel good inside... this verrsion is nothing on it and neither is eastons.

Listen to Joan Armatrading here on youtube ... the original version, and one of the greatest voices ever.

You didn't answer my question!

Especially when they do "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover".

that's better. Thanks!

I always thought the woman singing all the way throguh this version was Etheridge, and that Jewel only came in at the end. Am I mistaken?

It's Melissa Etheridge, Jewel, Joan Osborne, Paula Cole, and Sophie B. Hawkins. It's the finale of a VH1 Duets concert.

This is when Jewel was cool. She needs to get back to this sort of thing.

Does anyone know where the video is? It's from a show called VH1 Duets and it's from November 1995. It was the first time I ever saw Jewel perform. It's an awesome show!
