Please, lets not kid ourselves here. Martin was never the worlds best vocalist and I'm sure he never thought he was. What matters is the beauty in the lyrics and the arrangement of a beautifully crafted pop song. This particular song introduced me to The Chills and for me 'Submarine Bells' is an amazing album.
The magnificent beauty and vision of this song just takes my breath away. What an exhilirating performance! I have tears running down my cheeks as I type this. Fantastic
Martin had been through some serious health problems and they took their toll on him. It's obvious here. One can hear it in his out of tune singing. But still the song is one of his best and he is the one who wrote it and performing it here.I admit i felt a bit sad watching him struggling to sing right but being a fan of his all these years I understand his effort to keep on living as a musician and play his music. I wish all the best with him.He is essentially great.
Loved the build up and visuals. Great song. I bet it was an real experience seeing it live. Agree with flashrobbie. If anything needs to be a subject of a surreal stage musical it's Martin Phillips' music.
That was brilliant!!! I don't know what the neg comments are talking about - the original had that sort of ethereal sound that this doesn't have, but instead this version picks up on the edge-y throw out the rules attitude that the original had lying beneath the surface. Great stuff!
I would have liked the dancers more if they'd been wearing a wolfs head and an squid head. If any musician in the world deserves a surreal musical made about them it's Martin Phillips.
Having just tried, again-agin, reading abt. The Chills, e.g. at Wikipedia, and being none the wiser concerning their actual line-up, I should like to put this ''open question,'' just because I got ''acquainted'' with this fine band at the beginning of the 1990's: who, besides Martin Phillips, joined the latest line-up? Just interested/curious - nothing else :-). Thanks!
epic fucking song, these guys rule on styage, all fucking lackeys who complain about sound etc, have no idea of the reality of the bvrillioances of it.
HaHa! Those dancers were so fucking ridiculous. Actually, the whole thing was completely over the top so they kind of fit in in a way, even though I was in disbelief when they came out- though that organ in the beginning was pretty badass. I still love the Chills and Submarine Bells is still one of the five best albums I've ever listened to.
OK, it was a bit wobbly at the beginning but it wasn't as bad as some of these comments indicate. I've heard a lot worse - you guys seen Eric Burdon lately? Now that's sad and painful to watch.

One of my favourite songs, absolutely ruined. Couldn't watch it through. The ravages of time leave their mark yet again.

I love this song, but it's really sad to see Martin like this - even i can sing like this, have the drugs destroyed his voice?

Martin Phillipps is a genius through and through - even with evident foldback issues.
