Who would blame the Gater community? What made the Stargate franchise successful and defined it was SG-1, and that vision alone is the cultural phenomenon.
It's been over two years since Devlin's last attempts at starting the two sequels. We've heard nothing, so that must mean that it failed. Forget the original movie--its a proof of concept, a failed vision.
SG-1 etc. is the true Stargate. End of story.
I say this because that is way things are, not because I like it.
That's because Devlin and Emmerich are hacks. Why do you think MGM repeatedly turns them down when they come begging to do a sequel? Because like Buffy, the series has taken a forgettable movie and turned it into a hit series, it's now their second largest franchise after James Bond.

They keep turning down the sequels because people like YOU (hardcore SG-1 fanatics) won't ever give the idea of non-SG-1 sequels a chance. Seeing all the negative opinions from the Gater community makes MGM hesitant on releasing non-SG-1 related Stargate sequels.
And if it weren't for Independence Day and SG-1, there's a good chance that the sequels WOULD have been made.
The sequels won't be made because of the sequels lack of quality, but because of your hard hearts.
If the sequels were to be made they'd be aimed at a broad audience, the thoughts of SG-1 fans would be irrelevant, you're kidding yourself if you think that that's what holding MGM back. Besides, straight after the original was made Devlin approached them and they turn him down and went with the series instead. The original movie was mediocre at best, that's why more won't be made, I mean who the hell would trust their franchise to Devlin and Emmerich anyway?
If a sequel were to be released, most would think it connected with SG-1. Fans of SG-1 would flock to see the movie, while those who hate the show (but are unaware of the movie's existance) would avoid it. Most fans of SG-1 would be dissapointed with the film, while those who MIGHT have loved the movie never went to see it. In that case, the movie would not make much money, it would flop, and MGM would get no profit.
The reason MGM didn't give Devlin & Emmerich the go-ahead to make the sequels at THAT time is because they weren't convinced that the Stargate franchise would make it
To avoid losing money, instead of making a multi-million dollar big budget theatrical movie, MGM allowed a relatively inexpensive TV show to be created instead. If the show had failed, it would have been no big loss to MGM as opposed to the failure of a big budget movie
The sequels MAY have been made in the future, regardless
That doesn't make sense. It's obvious that they didn't make them because they didn't think they'd make money, but that's got nothing to do with the series. The risk wouldn't have changed would it? If the risk was too big then then why would it be any smaller now with or without the series? And believe me, the likelihood of Devlin getting his movies will only be helped by the success of SG-1, not hindered by it.
A MOVIE requires a larger budget than a TELEVISION SERIES.
If Stargate 2 had failed, MGM would lose a LOT of money, SEVERAL MILLION DOLLARS.
If SG-1 had never got popular, the show would have been cancelled after a couple episodes - a season at most
They weren't sure the Stargate franchise would gain popularity. They decided they would take a risk, but a SMALL risk, in the form of a small relatively-inexpensive television series, instead of a LARGE risk - a big budget theatrical sequel.
I understand the risks. What I'm saying is the risks would have been there regardless of the series, so even if the series had never existed they STILL wouldn't have made another movie. In fact considering the profits SG-1 makes for them, they're probably even more likely to take the risk now then they were back then.
And WHY wouldn't they make another movie? Because YOU think don't like it?
Now you like provide bad examples of why the movie is inferior to the series. And I will be able to provide counter-points that render your statements pointless.
It's all subjective so there's no point arguing over which is better. I don't think they'll make another Devlin movie because they haven't already, they've turning him down repeatedly over the years. Nothing has changed. Charles Cohen, the guy who makes these sorts of decisions is a huge SG-1 fan, so the only way I see Devlin getting his way is if he's willing to incorporate his movie into existing canon, or if the franchise needs rebooting a few years down the line. Even then it's a long shot.
@01000001011100100111 I think Devlin might be more to blame then Emmerich...have you read the books based on the movie cannon? They are beyond awesome...and besides, making a sequel now would just fuck up the whole series cannon...so best to just not do it
First I saw "Stargate the children of the gods" and then I download all seasons/ In sth great!

The original Stargate movie is so much better than the television series which came after it, it's unreal.
As far as I'm concerned, "Stargate SG-1" was just a wild and wacky nightmare of Daniel Jackson's. :)

Completely AGREE, the show is good, just nowhere near as good as the movie!!!!

The series is so much better than the original movie it's not even funny, quite embarrassing for Emmerich and Devlin though...

Ohhh, poor baby! I am SO sorry the great original movie is not a stupid joke like Star Trek SG-1.
By the way, Mr. Oblivious, MOST individuals consider Stargate to be Devlin & Emmerich's BEST work TO DATE.

Devlin won't do that. His story CAN'T work in the SG-1 continuity, so he won't even bother trying to make it fit.
