@Kaegri if you really want to learn a lot about it read the Silmarillion. It's a long and painful read but if you can get through it so much about the history behind the LOTR is explained. Again if you're not used to reading old flowery language it might be tough, but definitely worth it if you're interested

In the generations preceding their birth, there were several intermarriages between men and elves. So they were known as half-elven, and were given the choice to be immortal like elves, or mortal like men. Elros chose a mortal life, though he and his descendants were still granted long lives.  Elrond chose to remain immortal elf-kind.

Elrond chose the immortal life, but Elros the mortal ... and by doing so imposed a mortal (albeit lengthy) life on all his descendents. At the time of LOTR, Elrond was about 6500 years old so there were many generations between Elros and Aragorn. Aragorn and Arwen are first cousins a few dozen times removed.

Regardless, if you look at the chronology given in the appendices at the end of "Return of the King," you'll find that it is entirely accurate. Aragorn was born in T.A. 2931, ten years before the events of "The Hobbit" and 87 years before his involvement in LOTR in T.A.3018.
