But in many ocasions in many cultures, depending on place where it is used it would mean greeting, respect, greeting before martial arts, it means something else when people bow while doing it.
Hey it is interesting topic. I made presentation about unverbal communication differences in many cultures three yers ago. That is good to know, cose you can avoid misunderstandings.
@Testarossa951 it really does depend on how much you can take in at one time and how fast you can memorize kanji, hiragana and katakana. if you can also memorize the sentence structure of Japanese sentences fast, then it shouldn't be very hard.
I'm learning Japanese, and oh booy, Kanji is complicated. and Rosetta Stone isn't helping me in this category either ~_~
I've watched some anime, and it's in Japanese and subtitled in my own language... and I often look up words in the dictionary and for now I know about 100 words in Japanese, and, yeah, to my point... there's 3 synonyms for the word I or me: ore, watashi and boku. I don't know if there's more but, yeah, my question is, when should you use whick of the words? I think boku is only used by men but I'm not sure of the other 2... I'd be very grateful for an answer! =)
@MuminF4n From my understanding, there are actually way more words synonymous with "I" in Japanese, but those are the most common. Boku can be used by males, but also by young/tomboyish girls. It's informal-ish and boyish. Ore is a really manly "I", and while not exactly rude, it's super informal and generally used between friends. Watashi is formal and gender-neutral.
I speak another Asian language w/ variations of "I" and I *still* find this unintuitive and complicated! :P. Good luck.
Could you tell me what Ekageni Sharase Konoduaho means in Japanese? My friens Kay told me this is what the Yakuza utter to a victim just as they are about to kill them? It would be interesting to know and how to pronouce it properly. Arigatou !
Could you please tell me if the name Tenshi (Angel) is possible to be used for a man. My name is Angel (Bulgarian) pronounced Angyel and i want to get tattoo in Kanji on my arm. Would it be appropriate. Will they laugh at me or think it's my girlfriends name if i went to a beach in Japan. Any suggestions. Arigatou!
@shikhargupta89 i think things like that are farther east like in china and india. that is why some of their clothes look similar too. so strange how "go away" in english is like "come here" in japanese. so opposite
@TLoZfanatic sumimasen is more versatile. i don't think it directly translates to i'm sorry as in i have sorrow. it can be used to get a store clerk's attention or if you're trying to get through a crowded room of people. it kind of has a feeling of saying i'm sorry to put you out or bother you so please excuse me for doing so. i lived in japan for 3 years but never took a class so most words i have a feeling for but don't know the direct translation.
Isn't that a gesture that's done pretty much everywhere? I don't know, i didn't know it was a specificly Japanese gesture for "sorry", i do that too and pretty much everyone does (and i'm not Japanese at all =P). Well, i guess i just learnt something then.
Hiroko-san, this series is really interesting! I have wanted to learn the gestures for a while after I learned the sign for "no" a long time ago. What a great series, doumo arigatou gozaimashita!

First gesture in Poland would be "Amen".
It is used when people pray to God.
But in many ocasions in many cultures, depending on place where it is used it would mean greeting, respect, greeting before martial arts, it means something else when people bow while doing it.
