@Dumplingmaster : No, these pieces were never intended to be nocturnes in the style of Chopin and Field. In fact, his original title was 'Corpse Fantasia' as he experienced premonitions of his brother's death whilst working upon the composition. It was Clara who persuaded him to change the title to the more general 'Night Pieces'.

Il y a ici en permanence cet équilibre dans la rupture qui est le climat schumannien le plus dur à restituer. Et ces élans galopants, ces tensions interrogatives !! C'est du grand art. Vraiment.
