@player836 yes they need 'double ball' strings. Google it, most strings only have 1 ball because they wrap around the 'Peg's on the head as he was showing on his acoustic guitar :). Don't feel dumb either, I bought a pack of regular 5-string bass strings and went to get it strung and i was like FUCK THIS IS IMPOSSIBLE hahaha. So no worries :)
Do you know if the 5 string Steinberger has a heave gauged string set? Also thanks for the demo on string switching... It was one of the determining factors on me buying one... Now if there are heavy double ball strings, I'll be set...
@markwoodruff777 Normally I change them one at a time so I can tune as I go but I wanted everyone to get a look at the bass and bridge with no strings on it.
@bassdiegofloyd The strings I use are Rotosound swing bass they are heavy gauge strings the G is 045 that's the heaviest I know of for a G string but most strings the G is 040 or smaller.
@hisroyalstigness Search for a Spirit by Steinberger that's what I have and it cost me around four hundred bucks. Mine is a Spirit xt-2db it has a drop tuner that is really neat and allows you to change the tuning of the E string just by flipping a lever but if you don't need that the xt-2 without the drop tuner is just as good.
@hisroyalstigness There are full body steinbergers and I would recommend steinberger basses to anyone I love mine. The tuning system is awesome I rarely have to tune my bass.
hey, I was wondering.. are you able to tune to drop B with a steinberger bass? I want to buy one but my band only plays drop B, so I don't want to buy it then realise i can't hahaha.
@WaxingAlan You can but the string feels really sloppy and you get a lot of buzz. Mine is a db model so you can tune the E string up or down with a lever on the tuner. It's like just flipping a switch and having a different tuning.
@IMNOTGEDDY oh thank you so much, cos when i saw that you had to tune from the bottom of the guitar, i automatically assumed you had to fiddle around with the adjustments just to go to another tuning, just like lock-in guitars, hahaha
thanks a heap, now i'll know just to buy higher gauge strings
@LethalThrashingForce You don't customize the strings. You customize the bass. They sell a different headstock that works with regular and double ball strings. It has set screws in it to secure the strings. In fact the synapse line comes standard with that type of headstock. I must say though I much prefer the double ball strings. They are easier to change out, stay in tune better, and don't cost that much more about $5-10 more for double for my favorite brand Rotosound swing bass 66.
It is a drop tuner for the E string. You can set the drop tuning anywhere from E flat to B once set just flip the lever out to tune down and back in to go back to E.
Yeah sorry about the noise I figured out what caused it. Next time I install strings I'm doing one with better audio.
Yo can by a piece that will allow it to take single ball strings but there's not much point in that. Most strings come in a double ball version. The price difference is negligible and the single ball strings even with the correct head piece are more work to install. They also can slip slightly which means less tuning stability.
I'm thinking of buying one of these...do they need special strings or what...im sorry if that is a stupid question about the bass

So are the "Tunning Pegs" near the bridge and knobs?

There is an adapter you can get that will allow you to use double or singe ball strings.
