And to think, he'd still be alive if he'd just turned down his goddamn radio while inside of the pizzaria. I can't sympathize with that kind of ignorance. BTW, I came across a list of the top 100 rap songs ever made. Fight the power was #1. Why? The song sounds like a bunch of samples thrown into blender. I applauded when the radio got smashed!
@braindance77 No, you're not getting me. I know it's a reference to The Night of the Hunter, because NOTH is one of my all-time favorite movies. But in Do the Right Thing it's an homage, and has nothing to do with environmentalism.
Everytime I see Spike Lee he reminds me of a part on Major Payne when MP says "alot of small people can do big things, little red riding hood, spike lee, the little rascals" LMAO
@mamobster1500 yeah, but he shouldn't have died regardless. They're enjoyable characters despite the fact that one may not agree with their ideals. The story of radio raheem and his symbolism make him necessary for the story.
@AirKangLocker he got mad at the peurto ricans because they were making fun of him as he was standing on their stoop BLASTING HIS BOOMBOX. Then he takes his anger on the koreans and make racist comments. Then he goes to Sal's pizza with BLASTING HIS BOOMBOX and with Sal screaming like hell, he finally turns it off. He gets mad at Sal for making him turn off his radio, a scar to his ego, and decides to storm to Sal's at midnight and talk shit and blasting the boombox right in front of sal's face.
@inline440 yes it is true that spike lee copied this concept from Charles Laughton 1955 film but i feel that with the representation of the 4 finger rings he was able to pay homage to the late filmmaker and bring it to audences of that time i dont feel that he was trying to claim that he thought of this himself....simalar to the 1932 scarface and the 1983 scarface.....
Honestly, if you're a Spike Lee fan and a movie buff, you'll see so many references to earlier films. That's just his way of paying respect to the films that changed his perspective on film making and life.
Alot of people seem to have a problem with this film and the message they think it's giving but I think one of the nice things about Spike Lee 'joints' is that they're not black and white, there aren't good and bad characters, most of them are more complex than that just like in real life, Mookie is a great example, I found him really likable but as Spike Lee says he's always out for making that money, getting paid above all else.
i noticed that in at least three spike lee movies i have seen there is a little kids drawing on the sidewalk with chalk. i remeber doing that as a young gil
The 'Love and Hate' story was done years before they did it in DTRT. Robert Mitchum in 'The Night of the Hunter' one of my fav movies. Just YouTube: 'Love Hate Night Hunter'
This guy had an attitude problem. Maybe if the poor brother had a father to whip his ass and teach him respect, he would have treated those Korean shopkeepers and Sal with more respect. Sadly for him, he meets an untimely death because his valued posession ( a fuckin ghettoblaster) was destroyed and he decides to go on a rampage.
Almost every person had an attitude problem. Are you implying that HE was the only person with an attitude? The whole point of his character is that there could be no Radio Raheem without his, as you call, "ghettoblaster". The same thing is implied with man and soul. How could man exist without soul? And last I checked, Sal was the one who started the "rampage" by destroying the radio in the first place.
this is a great scene. Robert mitchum did this same thing in a movie long ago called "The Night Of The Hunter" but with a more reserved approach and with Love and Hate tattoo'd on his knuckles
@eatbbq4040 Yes, it's the same love/hate scene from Night of the Hunter, almost word-for-word except Robert Mitchum has love and hate wrestle, and Radio Raheem has them fighting like Ali.
Here's a question for all of my hardcore film fans: Does anyone know the significance of the first scene where Spike walks through the girls chalk drawing? (Hint: Its a shot out to another classic NY film)
Watch how he steps right on the sunshine....Spikes films have so many levels...greatness!
@DoDoubleGc : Its a contridiction to the opening scene "prologue" of Westside Story. In the scene the gang notices a girl drawing in chalk on the playground, the leader of the gang thinks about walking through the drawing but changes his mind and walks around it. Critics of the film said that this was intentionally put in the film to show the gang's respect for the "innocence of childhood." In this film Spike steps directly on the girl's sun. I guess in the 80's respect for childhood is no more.

There are a lot of african people here in Italy. Although I do not properly love them, I think here they generally do not harm anybody. There was a young boy trying to sell me his magazines, for a very long time, I just gave him a coin, without buying anything. Recently, I started talking to him, he is a nice boy, he just can't find a proper job here, because of matter of citizenship, police, permissions.
Watch "Night of the Hunter" a movie from 1955 about a preacher that kills hookers. So sad, but everytime I watch an old movie or listen to an old song is seems someone has jacked some shit and re-used it.
Yeah, and I suppose The Untouchables "stole" its ending from Bronenosets Potyomkin, too, right?
What are you complaining about, anyway? Night of the Hunter is still one of the greatest movies of all time and is still available for you to view in its original form as many times as you wish no matter how many modern spins are done on a single speech from the movie.
@AAErikCO you are kidding right? obviously he was murdered by the cops but this guy was a massive asshole. he was warned many time to turn off his radio and the italian had enough and broke it. it was obvious raheem had no respect for anyone. if someone was playing heavy metal in the italian restaurant you think it would be any different?
As much as I disliked Radio Raheem, when reflecting back on the film you just have to take a step back and view what really happened. Raheem did not deserve to die. He WAS brutally murdered by the police.

Well , you cannot avoid love , hate , happy , unhappy etc. because its come from the mind , the mind comes from consciousness , consciousness come from mental formation , mental formation comes from perception , perception comes from sensation , sensation comes from five organs of sense .
"it is with this hand that i begin to label my waffle. it is with this hand that i finish labeling my waffle" does anybody else remember the episode of dexters lab where dexter pulled a radio raheem
Holy crap, YES! That's the episode when he had problems with Dee-Dee taking his stuff! It started with waffles, then to labels then chaos! Funny episode! LOL
Until now, I had no idea "Dexter's Lab" parodied this scene XD
awesome scene from an aweseome film. love and hate - always at war? the duality of man. We choose what we will be, every moment of every day. To hate is easy, because it feels good to strike at the great enemy (fear). To love is difficult, as it challenges us to open our fist and trust blindly. I look at my closed fist and see in it the world, locked in fear and anger. I look at my open hand and see the universe, open to possibility. Peace.
I like the look and sound of this film and do believe it has a great message for people to grasp.
But me being the way I am I am fuelled with rage and not love. I don't hate everyone just those who wrong me, and those who look down on me. For they will suffer the most from me when the time is right for me to strike.
For those that I love, I protect til the the day I die, hopefully there will be more of them than those I hate.
@drmurphysjello Not a paradox. Lee just put the words on brass knuckles to make it relevant to the character, it's what he would be into, it's what was popular at the time. The scene is taken from a film called The Night of the Hunter.

where can i find that
anothablend 2 years ago
It's in episode 20, the short is called "labels". I love how little kids shows use to have so many references for the parents watching.

Peace.

A Classic

I like the look and sound of this film and do believe it has a great message for people to grasp.
But me being the way I am I am fuelled with rage and not love. I don't hate everyone just those who wrong me, and those who look down on me. For they will suffer the most from me when the time is right for me to strike.
For those that I love, I protect til the the day I die, hopefully there will be more of them than those I hate.

This scene is such a paradox. Even if love wins, it is still communicated through brass knuckles.
drmurphysjello 2 years ago 34
@drmurphysjello Not a paradox. Lee just put the words on brass knuckles to make it relevant to the character, it's what he would be into, it's what was popular at the time. The scene is taken from a film called The Night of the Hunter.
