Since the US military is fully voluntary to join, there is no excuse for someone to join and then become a peacenik once the action starts. I can understand not following a command to do something cruel or unusual (killing non-combatants, slaughtering those who have surrendered, etc), but to not engage and shoot at the enemy is inexcusable. Since the US military is fully voluntary to join, there is no excuse for someone to join and then become a peacenik once the action starts. I can understand not following a command to do something cruel or unusual (killing non-combatants, slaughtering those who have surrendered, etc), but to not engage and shoot at the enemy is inexcusable. It would be best if they did not go out into the battle in the first place. These people are dangerous to their fellow soldiers.

Actually I am not a hawk. However, if you are in the middle of a battlefield, it is not the place to decide then and there that you are a dove. It is much more of an honorable thing to do before you are shipped there - and even before you sign up for the military.
Please don't argue the merits or motives of going to war in Iraq. Chances are I will agree with you 100%.
As the morality of the soldiers who fight in a war, well that is wholly subjective.

True. However, the first real moral decision the soldier made in the first place was when he or she decided to join the military and to take the oath. The military itself is, of course, not a democracy. Even though there is still the right and obligation of members of the military to not follow a clearly illegal and immoral order, actually engaging in battle is not part of that. When a person decides to join the military they should be clearly aware that one day they might have to fight.
