@seattletaytay screw you for preferring this to the original. ONLY A MAN CAN BE A KING OF PAIN. AM ALONE, AM ALONE, AM THE KING OF PAIN AND AM STING TO SING SO.
@dragonblogger I listened to this version all the time and never even looked up the original.. the first time I heard Sting it was with Lady GaGa a few weeks ago. It's a GREAT song, but I think this version is by far the best. :)
@mhartemusic Something like 30 years ago the original was played, if you grew up listening to the original you still kind of appreciate it but I agree this one captures more emotion than the original did.
@dragonblogger I like Sting a lot. I grew up with him + the Police playing somewhat often on the stereo (my favorite by him is Mad About You) but this song was never on, which is weird! But I do know him, he's really great
COVERS ARE JUST THAT! PLEASE STOP HATING, IF YOU PREFER STING'S VERSION DON'T BOTHER TRYING NEW STUFF. LIKE WE SAY IN HERE "VIVÍ Y DEJA VIVIR!! WHICH IS AS SIMPLE AS: LET IT BE! OR MORE VERBATIM, LIVE YOUR OWN LIFE AND LET THE REST LIVE THEIRS!!!!
She does a great cover of this song, but really doesn't add much to it, but it is hard to add to sting, his voice is remarkable. Now, I want you to listen to it again, and listen to the band, they are great.
@PIENIEKHENIEK Because one of her hit songs was called Ironic. It was a great tune, but nothing in the song was really in any way ironic, so she has been associated with the misuse of the word irony. In other words, just a joke.
"That's my soul up there." This is the ultimate Zen song. Thank you Sting and the Police for decades of amazing and profound music. And thank you Alanis for making this song even more special. It is so beautiful that it makes me cry.
@MrTupelo64 you might be interested in a japanese woman calling herself KOKIA, very good. p.s. i'm either over analyzing, or your name is a Nick Cave reference, nice!
Applaud the effort, but this song is more than lyrical delivery and content. The layers of the original version are missed. The guitar playing of Andy Summers, the drumming of Stewart Copeland as well as the piano, which drove the original and seems to play background here. Nice effort, but this is one of those iconic songs that really shouldn't be covered.
@Canes305 i thought it was good but yea the thing about covering the police is that they are all such talented players. you can cover the song but can you find a drummer as good as copeland or a bassist as good as sting or a guitarist as good as andy? its still good but anything by the police is irreplaceable i agree
when she sings " theres a little black spot on the sun today" she nails it.. obviously alanis has an amazing voice.. she is one of a handful of people that could do a version of this sone well enough to make me listen to it start to finish...
awesome voice.. great song period. yea the original by the police is and always will be best.
I love her voice, it's really special! Like that woman in Cranberries, Dolores I think... It's so sad to see this site always full of hateful comments, if you love, say so, if you hate, ignore. The world would be so much better that way.
How can you "enjoy" nails-to-the-blackboard self-indulgence like this? Enjoy the MUSIC is right. Her voice is fucking HIDEOUS. It's kind of embarrassing to watch. "There's a little black SHPOT on the SHUN today ... It's my DESHTINY to be the King of Pain ...." Sweet Christ!
dude whatever her voice is horrible. give it up people the best thing alanis ever did was appear on a few episodes of You Can't do That on Television.
@NeuralNetProcessor hahahaha...uhhhhh right her voice is 'horrible" her 7 grammy's and 13 juno's agree with you I'm sure. She didn't sell it through sex so obviously she had something (talent going for her.)
@yancybutler ...actually, I think for her last Grammy she remembered to thank "all my stupid fans; without you, I'd have nothing." Nah j/k but for real she sucks and so do you.
I kinda like this music. I think it's average. I do know the two versions. I'm a bit indiferent for this music. But Alanis versions is better. C'amon people. This Woman is directly connected with the heaven. She is an incredible human being.
this is a great rendition of this Sting classic, i may be a bit biased becuase i am a Sting fan, but you cant deny her talent and delivery. i agree with @MRG2112MGV a duet would be epic.
I have alway been a huge fan of Sting, and the Police... but if I hadn't heard them do this song first... I would have thought it WAS an Alanis original... I am Sure that she picked this song sor that same reason... She must have heard it and said... wow... my kinda song... I prefer Alanis' Version... and I have seen borh Alanis and Sting perform it like over a dozen times each... this is a very reserved preformance compared to a hers I have seen, but very nice.
.......... ......... ..... ..... Hey there youtubers!, I came to post here hoping to get a few viewson a song called "KEEP ON" sung by my friend Shelby. If you can check it out and leave your feedback, it would really help. :) Leave your honest opinion :) Thankssss ;) ...... .... .. .
Credentials? Not necessary to have an opinion but helpful to have an informed opinion. I would give more weight to what Neil Peart or Bob Dylan may think of my lyrics or performances then a stranger on YouTube. I do, however, respect the right and freedom for people to express an opinion. No wrong. No right. Opinion is an extension of relevance to ones "self". You do not need music appreciation class to appreciate music. Ultimately, how you feel about your own or others art is meaningful.
Why on earth Morissette decided to do this lounge-lizard version of this practically psychotic punk-injected reggae-rock classic from Synchronicity, I'll never know. Not a single shade of nuance is left after her toaster-oven-shallow flippancy. If I were The Police I'd issue a restraining order. I'd rather listen to the Muzak version of Led Zeppelin.
@marsharse No, it's a little thing called taking a song you love and RUINING it because you don't have enough TALENT to understand and interpret it. 95% of covers are like that. Live with it.
@beejjackson No thats just being narrowminded and not being able to appreciate different styles of music I don't like Alanis Morissette but this is not a bad interpretation of the song.
@marsharse Narrowminded? You have no freaking idea of the breadth of my appreciation of music. I have produced symphony orchestras from Munich to San Fransisco, and bands from LA to Muscle Shoals, and I LOVE Alanis -- in fact, I have LOVED Alanis, in Montreal, twice in 3 years. What can I say? She likes me. I just loathe this cover. It sucks. She knows it. We have different opinions.
@beejjackson Does anyone else find it doubtful that anyone with the incredible resume you claim would be engaged in a juvenile back and forth on you tube? this cover is acceptable, not great but not horrible. I do not believe one iota of your claimed credentials, beejackson
@wakarusarat “There is a principle which is a bar against all information, which is proof against all arguments and which cannot fail to keep a man in everlasting ignorance—that principle is contempt prior to investigation.”
—Herbert Spencer
I from time to time engage in conversation on this and several other websites. In this case, the ignorance characteristic of the average Youtube viewer has relegated the conversation to meaninglessness. Try checking the facts before stating an opinion.
@beejjackson Saying you loathe it, and it sucks, is all very well. Can you specifically explain the qualities that make this rendition so distasteful to you?
@marsharse You have no clue as to the breadth of my appreciaton of music. And I love Alanis. She is well aware of that, AND of the fact that I find her talent limited. We can live with it. So should you.
@beejjackson oh sorry hang on till I just clean up this pile of shit your spewing everywhere. Honestly to say this is a bad cover is fucking stupid it is very well done and sounds good thats what matter so fuck if it isn't the same as the police version people interpret music in different ways and this is done very well.
@marsharse Opinion only goes so far in music. Some people don't like Mozart. That simply labels them as morons -- it doesn't mean a thing regarding the quality of Mozart's music. The fact that you appear to enjoy this particular piece of trash does not in the most minute iota alter it from being a piece of trash.
Honestly, take a music appreciation class or SOMETHING before you engage in a discussion like this. We're talking about a made-for-TV cover that no label would ever release.
@beejjackson Alanis sang the melody perfectly in tune and in rhythm, enunciated all the words correctly, and used her ever vibrant voice. Musically the melody is the same as Sting's. There is nothing musically wrong with this piece, so perhaps it's her viewpoint you don't like. That's drama, not music.
@beejjackson although i may not be qualfied to say anything , i feel i must. isn't everyone's talents limited. as far as i am concerned at least she has the guts to do what she believes in. therefore, what are ur talents and there limitations ? i am not trying to pick a fight but i am courious to find out.
@MsJohnson78 The consequence of the structure of the Pop music industry is that Britney Spears sells 40 million records and only a handful of people are even aware of The Mars Volta, for example. Talent is never the issue; the lowest common denominator is. Ms. Morrisette had nothing to do with this arrangement. When she does a cover it always shows respect and understanding; this displays neither. But who cares? It was an also-ran TV show that got a 3 share in the overnights. Big deal.
One of the few songs I have heard where I feel that the original and cover BOTH do equal justice to the song. I love the Police's original, but Alanis did a phenomenal job. :)
@alisys161 Sorry mate, but there are some covers that surpass the original... This is one of them... It's kind of funny though, alanis has made a deep mark in my life and she will never know... And I don't know wether to celebrate or depress... What I know is: as long as music has this kind of power upon our lives, we will be alright,,,
alaniss morrisett is a racist for nots marrying a black rapper!!!!!!!!!!!! throuugh her whole lifes she has never married or dated a black mans. buts now out of all the rappers....she marries a white rapper? jenna jameson is also a racist...It's in her contract. Interracial porn is despised. but whens she was in school she screwed the whole football team and some were black...she was atacked by the black momba...racist %$
kinda be touched. this voice gets unter skin. besides melissa etheridge one of my favorite singers. without doubts she brings the beauty just by singin.
@Tmacumber It's all about faith, but not the one towards a certain God it's the kind of faith in general that keeps you alive so "don't let it out" is a reference to it "you'll feel it coming on" is about a spirit or some sort of spiritual force that enriches that faith of yours Like the part when it says "up up POPS from the sky" is a reference to that strange force that keeps you going it pops out of nowhere, it's the one that tells you to Keep on when you're about to give up Thanks4 asking :)
I am a heavy metal fan... I like Metallica, Pantera, Sepultura... but I love Alanis Morissette :) jaggedered little pill is one of them albums that can not be denied as emotional talent
i simply adore her, and i simply adore this version of the song. but something just occurred to me
. . .
anybody ever notice she sort-of looks like a muppet when she sings?

@beejjackson oh sorry hang on till I just clean up this pile of shit your spewing everywhere. Honestly to say this is a bad cover is fucking stupid it is very well done and sounds good thats what matter so fuck if it isn't the same as the police version people interpret music in different ways and this is done very well.
marsharse 1 year ago

I have to give her credit. So few musicians even dare to cover Police songs and she has done a great job.
