People are wondering as to why Gould did this, was it because of Patricia's participation, was he involved with her in some way? And such like. But I just think it's a harmless bit of fun to be honest. I mean, yes I'm sure all those involved appreciated Walton's music, but I'm also fairly sure they never imagined and inquisition about it long after they're both dead.
a famous(well, it seems that she was famous only in Canada...), and sings with Gould many pieces, including Shoenberg "Pierrot Lunaire", a dificult piece to sing. Also, was invited by gould to sing his pice"SO, YOU WANT TO WRITE A FUGUE?'". She died of a cancer, abou two years ago.
Not for the musical piece,or the paticipation of Goul on it . I' m surprised because you refers to Patricia Rideout as "that woman who Gould embraces", or "who 's that girl", etc.
If we are looking for motivation as to why on earth Gould would do this, I think the answer is featured prominently at 54-57 seconds.
He doesn't seem too concerned about any germs being on this woman's neck. Who is this woman? When and where was this production? Any more Gould footage?
This clip is just another example of why youtube is so great.
It's worth noting that he never actually touches her neck; indeed, it seems that he makes sure not to touch any part of the woman not covered by clothing.
Do not take a bath in Jordan Gordon, On the holy Sabbath, on the peaceful day! Said the huntsman, playing on his old bagpipe, Boring to death the pheasant and the snipe - Boring the ptarmigan and grouse for fun - Boring them worse than a nine-bore gun. Till the flaxen leaves where the prunes are ripe, Heard the tartan wind a-droning through the pipe,
And they, heard Macpherson say: "Where do the waves go; What hotels Hide their bustles and their gay ombrelles? And would there be room for me? - Would there be room, Would there be room for me?" There is a hotel at Ostend Cold as the wind, without an end, Haunted by ghostly poor relations Of Bostonian conversations (Like bagpipes rotting through the walls.) And there the pearl-ropes fall like shawls With a noise like marine waterfalls.
And "Another little drink wouldn't do us any harm" Pierces through the sabbatical calm. And that is the place for me! So do not take a bath in Jordan, Gordon, On the holy Sabbath on the peaceful day- Or you'll never go to heaven, Gordon Macpherson, And speaking purely as a private person That is the place - that is the place - that is the place for me!
We've been using this rhapsody as a warm up in Stage Production and I am so happy to see someone who actually knows what their doing.

Perhaps the woman was Gould's girlfriend?

It's worth noting that he never actually touches her neck; indeed, it seems that he makes sure not to touch any part of the woman not covered by clothing.
weikko79 3 years ago
On the other hand, the woman does touch Gould's hand. She probably had to wash her hand a thousand times before Gould would allow that.

Because he was.

Did anyone listen to the lyrics? It's talking unkindly to the way Glenn secluded himself from his neighbors.
