hahaha it was all in the R/T that GN would have smoked that z28 i know cause i have a GN and a GNX and trust me pal that z28 dont stand a chance if his R/T WAS ON THE BALL
@wtsig76 Thats one sick ass Z bro!!! To all you haters out there it does not take much to make a tune port camaro fast!! I bet you were not even spraying lol
The GN would not have won. Yes, he lost on the R/T, but the Zapper pulled on him through the whole race. If the Gn had a chance, it would have started catching up to the camaro, but it couldn't.
Besides, the camaro was not stock, you can tell by how quick it revs up.
@tornado2010ish Stock for stock an '87 GN vs. a '91 Z28 5.7 was a driver's race.I have in fact owned both and they both made 245hp stock, with a slight edge in torque going to the Z28.Don't discount the mulletmobile.
Well filmed video. The GN needs a 61mm Garrett , an intercooler and a tune. 11 Seconds on that alone,, they are insane. If they make a "Christine 2 " they should use an 87 GN.
@Tmaxxnc me too !!!!Of course the z28s are cool, but there is just something about a clean black GN with that sound.Yum yum .The prices on decent GNs are getting crazy though lol.
Great race head up. it would have been alittle better if the GN hooked up alittle better looks like it might have broke free alittle but the trap speed was a little higher then the z28
the GN has a tuned chip, cat-back, and a CAI and a plenum. The Z28 has gears, CAI and a chip, msd box, headers and exhaust. The camaro is modded more. The camaro ran about a 14.6 stock.
@andytheobliviator You should spend more time at a local drag track. I raced my friends stock '86 GN with my stock '92 Z28 (5.7 TPI) and he edged me out, 14.32ish to my 14.40 in our 1st heads up race! I took some air pressure out the rears for rd 2, and I edged him out with a 14.29 (hehe)...
@superdemon i dont see a supercharger? that looks like a regular TPI set up to me, if it is supercharged then i apologize, thats that looks like TPI to me
No, you are right. I originally watched it at work, on a crappy monitor. I thought the plastic intake coming straight off the front of the intake was a supercharger. My apologies to you, friend.
I agree with andytheobliviator below, and you rarely see a z28 beat a GNX in a heads-up race. AllI can figure is the guy driving the GNX was not pushing it the way it could be. My GNX ate v-8s for breakfast, Ford, Mopar, and Chevy.
@superdemon: no doubt GNX's are bad ass cars, but it all depends on what was done to the z, obviously it has more work done to it if its beating a GNX
this car and driver were usually around 14.0 most of the time, On a cool day he ran 13.50.. Im sure there were alot of tricks he didn't do, but i wasn't gonna help him beat me!
this is all true there will always be a faster car, but i still love blowin the doors off of ricers in my truck. 72 c10 custom 350 bored to 369 or so. i would say muscle for life entirely.
stock for stock the GN would probably run 14.0 and the Z28 would run 14.6... .6 seconds is about 4 car lengths. no matter what you drive or what you are a fan boy of, there is always a faster/quicker car.
for the record a bone stock 1987 buick gn can be tuned to 15 pounds and run 12.95 completely stock... not trying to sound like a dick btw, just some imput
The second slowest GN I ever seen something surely was wrong or driver error. My first GN ran mid 13s stock all day and would smoke most cars. But good race I like your work to that V8.
stock gn s dont run mid 13s they are 14.2 when cold and boy do they slow down when hot i ve sold dozens of them 13.9 on drag radials and test pipe replacing the cat but 13.5 all stock, never.
I have seen more stock 13.5 then i have seen stock 14 sec Buick GNXs.Its all about where your at the turbo cars respond different to how the air is . so im sure theirs places where they run 14s here the have been in 13s all day everyday. I been to track all around the us and i run different times at everyone . usley within 5 tenths of a sec off my normal time .
..ok the spamaro won this one- however, please look at the time slip. The GN obviously did not charge up or launch with a full boost..not to mention the r/t was horrible...poor excuse but would have def been a closer race otherwise...i'm just sayin..
the gn is and always will be twice the car of the camaro, and not to mention the look, the gn is prollyone of the most badass looking cars ever made.and that camaro had twice the fucking mods then the buick did, fuck camaros
You are right. that GN has only a few mods compared to the camaro. It took lots of bolt-ons just to get below 14.0.. check out the "quest for 11's" vid
out handle the GN? of course it will. GN heavier. GN higher center of gravity. GN full steel frame car. GN less aerodynamic. BUT in the 1/4 mile (in stock form) the GN will eat that camaro's lunch. in 1986 or 1987 the GN was faster in the 1/4 mile then the 1986 or 1987 corvette. plus the GN just looks better. OMHO
hahaha no they werent..... the buick was faster those year vetts were slow as shitt, the chevy got bs at buick for being faster, typical gm fighting with each other
I love your camaro man i wanna make mine run like urs but i gotta save they are fast tho mines fairly stock just the exhuast/header, cams, air filter, and new fuel injectors and rails
1987 Grand National - 245 bhp and 355 lb-ft. 1987 GN GNX - 275 bhp and 360 lb-ft. 1/4's at 13.4 @ 104mph. You guys think those V6's are so great. They are, but I would much rather here an V8 roaring down the track then a little 6. Even a L98 motor with little work would easily out run the GN. Simple mods like a performance chip on the GN put it in the 12's and of course swapping out the turbo would net even lower times.
You can do this with any 350 and net better results. A turbo'd 305 would stomp on a GN. Let alone a a 350 like an L98, 327, 302 would run circles around the GN's. Besides, they look like a Granny car. Monte's and Camaros are the better choices back then!
I don't think a 305 would have enough sturdiness in the block to handle any boost. And you say a GN looks like a grannys car? LOL what you don't think a Monte carlo doesn't?
wow if you think GNX's looked like grandma cars your retarded. never seen a grandma drive a black on black car with a 6 turbo, and that 6 was'nt little it could stomp on any Z28 stock.
305's suck! On average, they are 15 second cars box-stock. A low boost turbo kit on top of a 305 TPI w/ basic bolt-ons such as cat-back, and lets throw in some gears will likely be a 13 second vehicle. A GN can reach that point w/ around $1000 spent. L89 or L98 - No comparison to a 3800 Turbo.
V8's sound better but that's if you don't mind filling up every other day. With a GN you have economy, power and luxury all in one package. Plus a turbo 3.8 will build up power quicker than most any 350 V8. I know I have a turbo 3.8 and it turns tires into smoking power and deep black grooves in the road in 2 seconds, with any 350 V8 I've tried that with it took 5 seconds to do with a line lock and no weight on the rear, because the reciprocating mass of a V8 is MUCH heaver than a V6.
oh btw search Chris Chow and take a look at his buick gnx. that could smoke the shit out of this crappy camaro, the 80's were shitty for the camaro it picked up when they made the new design that looks so much better. these camaros are ass ugly.
Your crazy for even comparing an L98 to a 3800 SEFI Turbo in the context that you are. Two totally different machines. L98's can reach mid 13's on average w/ the usual bolt-ons, a few in the 13.3 range. A GN or GNX can hit 12's w/ a tune, downpipe/exhaust. I have seen GN's w/ just that, built 200R, stall, gears and tires run low-low 12's. No comparison there buddy.
the turbo 3.8 motor only has lower compression (8-1?) Like a lot of forced induction engines it would be pathetic without the turbo. it would be like removing a few cylinders from the v-8.
thats right i didnt misspell i lick rivieras bitch what u gonna du about it little fucken botards accept for the ones that like camaros mor than penis rinkle grand nationals
Both cars would benefit from some sticky tires. Especially the GN. The outcome would've been a lot different then I think. The trap sppeds and the 60 foots speak for themselves.
to me it doesnt matter who won. these cars are so damn sexy!!!!!!!(gnx) i live in a town called manheim in pa. if some of you are familiar with it we have the worlds largest auto auction(big whoop right?), anyways i came across an 87 gnx with only 11k original miles. i was like holy mother of jesus. it sold for like 35k. i sat in it, and it seriously still smelled new. such a beautiful car.
I still say in addition to obvious driver issues... the GN's mechanical tune may be suspect here... either or he was running crappy 91 octane in 100 degree weather.
he was running over 93 octane. He mixed in some 110 at the track. He was running stock tires. A 215 60 sereis radial. He couldn't lanch that thing without spinning bad. Im not gonna tell him that though;)
Octane doesnt make more power it just stops detonation. if the GN was tuned badly to were it detonated them maybe he could get more power but the fuel could be 115 octane and it would still run the same.
stock L98's were around 14.5-15.0 depending on the conditions. my L98 took alot of mods to break that 14.0 barrier. rear-end gears helped alot since the L98 makes more torque than an LT1, but less HP
I'm pretty impressed, considering the GNX is only a V6 and it kept up with it rather closely. i noticed someone said "GM Performance"... well, they're both GM's.
That was a Grand National not a GNX, in the GN family but the GNX has more power stock than a GN, or T Type. That Z28 had to be more modified to beat a GNX, Im shocked that it beat this GN but Im sure the GN was bone stock. Im not disrespecting the Z28, I owned a 1992 25th Anniversary RS Camaro (wishing it was a Z28) but now Im a proud owner of a 1986 GN.
the z28 was modded more than the GN, but the GN had some mods too. 3.73 gears, increased boost (chip), exhaust, plenum foil in the intake, MSD ignition. On a cool day it would be alot more interesting. The Z28 has a bone stock motor (internal & heads) with 140k on it.
that z was a damn nice lookin car. I saw someone put the gn runs mid 13 stock. that sounds about right. those fuckers are bad. I've heard they were the fastest car in the world for several years.
i f-ing love this video man....i have basically that exact same camaro, 91'z28 with a 350, mine is mostly stock but its the same color and i even have the suport bar acroos the middle exactly the same. loved seeing you take that GN. when i finish my camaro i will have to get a video of it on here.
When I had my car new, I ran it 9 times, stock, 14.08 my best, and that was mid summer in New England, everyone knows, every degree under 60 is 1 more horse power for a GN. I then started mods down to 12.2, we ate all z's and stangs
That race came down to traction. The GN didn't need to spool any more than he did - he didn't have enough traction for anything more. The GN was faster (101 vs. 100) but the Z28 was quicker as a result. If the GN had a 2.0 60' like the Camaro he'd have beat him. But he didn't, and he lost. That's the way it goes. Nice Z28, too - you don't see too many 3rd gens that are well maintained.
my respect to both cars .... I have one of each , both great cars

I know I have a turbo 3.8 and it turns tires into smoking power and deep black grooves in the road in 2 seconds, with any 350 V8 I've tried that with it took 5 seconds to do with a line lock and no weight on the rear, because the reciprocating mass of a V8 is MUCH heaver than a V6.

oh btw search Chris Chow and take a look at his buick gnx. that could smoke the shit out of this crappy camaro, the 80's were shitty for the camaro it picked up when they made the new design that looks so much better. these camaros are ass ugly.
muskated 3 years ago
As for Chris Chow's dyno video, that car actually has a twin-turbo small-block V8 underneath - not a V6.

N20LT4 3 years ago
take away the turbocharger and lets see how bad ass this 3.8 is!! you wont be seeing 12's very easily!!!
Yplate180 3 years ago
True. But if you took away the turbocharger, then...it wouldn't be a Grand National, now would it!
ahhhhhhhhhhhhh...;-)
N20LT4 3 years ago 7
the turbo 3.8 motor only has lower compression (8-1?) Like a lot of forced induction engines it would be pathetic without the turbo. it would be like removing a few cylinders from the v-8.
jasper232323 3 years ago
I've run 10.2 on drag slicks on my minimally modified Grand National.

WHo the fuck would do that?.

You didnt notice the higher trap speed of the GN? Loud exhaust doesnt guarantee a powerful car!!

not that fast low 14s

Both cars would benefit from some sticky tires. Especially the GN. The outcome would've been a lot different then I think. The trap sppeds and the 60 foots speak for themselves.

that z28 spray noz cuz no one win BUICK GRAND NATIONAL

to me it doesnt matter who won. these cars are so damn sexy!!!!!!!(gnx) i live in a town called manheim in pa. if some of you are familiar with it we have the worlds largest auto auction(big whoop right?), anyways i came across an 87 gnx with only 11k original miles. i was like holy mother of jesus. it sold for like 35k. i sat in it, and it seriously still smelled new. such a beautiful car.

GN's stock are seriously fast.

Lots of folks don't understand that GM dropped that car because it was faster than their flagship, the corvette
mjsmith939 4 years ago
my stock 94 vette w/LT1 ran 13.6 @ 104 mph on 93 octane
aric333 4 years ago
thought it should have been closer than that
dangerzone24 4 years ago
I still say in addition to obvious driver issues... the GN's mechanical tune may be suspect here... either or he was running crappy 91 octane in 100 degree weather.
Zink57 4 years ago
he was running over 93 octane. He mixed in some 110 at the track. He was running stock tires. A 215 60 sereis radial. He couldn't lanch that thing without spinning bad. Im not gonna tell him that though;)
wtsig76 4 years ago
Octane doesnt make more power it just stops detonation. if the GN was tuned badly to were it detonated them maybe he could get more power but the fuel could be 115 octane and it would still run the same.
CLAYTONTHEBRAIN 4 years ago
he had the higher octane because the chip he had pushed the boost up and required high octane fuel

GNX... the corvette killer
LoganHankins 4 years ago
eh, the camaro had a better start. after the start neither car got any distance on eachother. an even match with a bad start on the GN.
LoganHankins 4 years ago
a stock LT1 can't take a stock GN.... GNs are 14.0 stock. LT1s are barely 14.0 stock. L98s are no way close to 14.0
Zink57 4 years ago
stock L98's were around 14.5-15.0 depending on the conditions. my L98 took alot of mods to break that 14.0 barrier. rear-end gears helped alot since the L98 makes more torque than an LT1, but less HP
wtsig76 4 years ago
both of these cars are cool as hell...!! 2007POWERSTROCKER...who cares where the mustangs are???????
mannyman84 4 years ago
I'm pretty impressed, considering the GNX is only a V6 and it kept up with it rather closely. i noticed someone said "GM Performance"... well, they're both GM's.
Good Race though, and i'm a proud Z-28 owner.
ReverendSlick 4 years ago
That was a Grand National not a GNX, in the GN family but the GNX has more power stock than a GN, or T Type. That Z28 had to be more modified to beat a GNX, Im shocked that it beat this GN but Im sure the GN was bone stock. Im not disrespecting the Z28, I owned a 1992 25th Anniversary RS Camaro (wishing it was a Z28) but now Im a proud owner of a 1986 GN.
badassv6 4 years ago
the z28 was modded more than the GN, but the GN had some mods too. 3.73 gears, increased boost (chip), exhaust, plenum foil in the intake, MSD ignition. On a cool day it would be alot more interesting. The Z28 has a bone stock motor (internal & heads) with 140k on it.

it was the fastest USA production car i think.
wtsig76 4 years ago
fastest production car of 1987 with the GN coming with intercoolers

i f-ing love this video man....i have basically that exact same camaro, 91'z28 with a 350, mine is mostly stock but its the same color and i even have the suport bar acroos the middle exactly the same. loved seeing you take that GN. when i finish my camaro i will have to get a video of it on here.
keegoplaya 5 years ago
When I had my car new, I ran it 9 times, stock, 14.08 my best, and that was mid summer in New England, everyone knows, every degree under 60 is 1 more horse power for a GN. I then started mods down to 12.2, we ate all z's and stangs
Meni69 5 years ago
That race came down to traction. The GN didn't need to spool any more than he did - he didn't have enough traction for anything more. The GN was faster (101 vs. 100) but the Z28 was quicker as a result. If the GN had a 2.0 60' like the Camaro he'd have beat him. But he didn't, and he lost. That's the way it goes. Nice Z28, too - you don't see too many 3rd gens that are well maintained.
