Not only won't you get the proper volume, but you'll loose a certain sound as well if you don't use finger picks. I hated them too and couldn't get used to them, but I forced myself to use them and in time it felt better than using fingers alone. Now I play with picks as if I have feeling through the picks. It's your choice of course, but picks would do you well. Good luck. :o)

It's for a microphone to pick up the sound..the banjo is not electrified.
