This is continued. I'm sorry about the loss of your mother, Ivan. She's surely in a better place now. I met you while I lived in NOLA but you coundn't have known how. I'm a nurse. I was happy to see you at the Turning Stone Casino in upstate NY several years ago in concert with Aaron. You were great on the keyboards and I enjoy your CD's. eep up the great work.
Ivan, you really performed well in this song and I esp. like the "Take me back to New Orleans" lines. You sing it all so well. You and family were in my thoughts and prayers bwhen Katrina hit. I lived in NOLA for 4 years in the mid-1990's and I loved it there. It was special and toubhed me spiritually. Now I'm back 'home' in upstate Ny but still miss NOLA so and was very upset by the govt's disgustingly slow response and follow-up to the diasaster in a city that' so special.
If you like that real straight rock stuff there is a version by 38 special that you would probably like. This is real New Orleans funk and personally I love it.
When these cats went into the studio and recorded this tune, it was in Austin, where they had evacuated after Katrina ~ so yes, it has some very definite added relevance re: the failed state - that failed in Vietnam, Iraq & New Orleans ~ for more, (or the facts on why) , see Naomi Klein's recently released book, "The Shock Doctrine~ The Rise of Disaster Capitalism"......
Fortunate Son was a really appropriate musical response to Katrina...
This song is not about having a funky good time, it's about the fucking war in Vietnam. Don't get me wrong, these guys are great musicians, but evidently they TOTALLY do not get what this song is supposed to be about.
You are right. Sorry... I'm rather touchy about the "Vietnam experience." Evidently I have trouble seeing this song anywhere else except in its original context. Clearly, it does apply today, too.
I think Ivan intended it to be a protest song about the way that many of the poor people of New Orleans have been treated by the government post-Katrina. Check out the line about "Whatcha gonna do with the money?"
Man, the Nevilles ARE the rockinest artists that many have never heard of, but thankfully they'll keep New Orleans' "shave and a haircut boom boom" riff alive forever! Hail to the Nevilles and da riddum!

If you like some swamp rock, there's a version by this guy named John Fogerty that's pretty cool.

It's about a LOT more than that BlueONWhite, just as relevant today. Listen to the words again.
