A belated comment, sorry: work's been really busy. A really interesting topic. The examples in context are especially helpful - much appreciated.

Boss only really applies to one's immediate manager. Levels above that are usually described as `the boss's boss', and so on.

It's all intresting,especially the age and class year part. Here, in the US, ages with a particular class year can vary up to 2 years difference. There is a cut off date of December 1st so if you don't turn 5 till after then you are made to go in the next class...but it's all about when your parents enroll you because some parents wait till age 6 and others enroll their children in school at age 4...like me :)
