  • dope!! thanks for the upload vinroc.

  • does the asr10 have a midi option to connect it whit your computer and vst programs ???

  • @slokaka yes but not all models I believe.

  • HEy what sample is that? busta rymes has a song with that same sample.

  • @biggalensmith It's Dr Buzzards Original Savannah Band - Sunshower MIA also sampled it

  • It gets weird once you get into new wave samples. Seems like whenever you touch another key something goes out of tune and it's hard to keep track of which chop is where. Am I the only one having an issue like this?

  • @96Z24 it pitches up a note and you have to adjust. its quite simple. ill try to post a video in detail

  • Thanx vin, now I can chop on my eps as well..hay folks, don't sleep on the eps. Samples sound extra gutter coming out this thing, and their cheap too..36 chambers was made on it..what u know bout that

  • cheers man, it was a big help watching this, i just got my asr 10 & im choppin beats straight away, it would have taken forever to figure it out myself

  • to anyone that knows of rammstein: is this the keyboard flake uses for du hast?

  • I get so many people asking me how to chop on the ASR and I always direct them to this vid even though i don't use this method ha

  • Hello, I just got an ASR10 with a zip drive and some sound discs. I can't figure out how to keep an effect on one track. Some of the sounds on the discs have some preset effects on them and when I select another track with a different sound it seems to carry the effect on to it. Can you tell me how to isolate the effect to it's own track? Thank you

  • @Muncheys unfortunately you cant add a different effect to each instrument on the asr. you should choose the effect, then resample it with the effect.

  • You are right about that but have you tried using a multi-effect (one on the asr10 that has like 3 effects in one like the verb/delay/chours multi-effect) etc. Then I'm pretty sure you can say use reverb on instrument one, and none on #2 and say verb and chorus on #3, only delay on #4 etc. I think I've done that in the past on mine. Good luck.

  • @DEFSCOTTYB true...

  • @iamtekst look in the midi section of the asr..there is a selection for multi and omni I believe. play with those...I hope you are slaving everything to the mpc. the mpc is the "sequence brain" to your setup..I'm assuming you are doing it this way cuz this is Kanye's old setup.

  • Hey people i got a question for you.im new to the asr 10 family.i want to know what the scsi zip drive does? can i upload all my flopy disk to it?does it store the sounds on it that way i dont have to be putting a flopy disk at a time? if so whats the maximum zip drive the asr can handle?and whats the zip drive you recomend me to get? thanks in advance and hope someone gets back to me soon.i hope it does store sounds.i hate going trough floppy disk.thanks in advance...D-lux

  • @djdeluxe101 You cant "upload" to it. you will have to load each beat one at a time and save to the scsi individually as songs. tedious if you have a lot of work on floppy

. I suggest transfering over to Zip format asap as it will make your life easier or if you record to Protools or any DAW...dump the Tracks immediately and dont even worry about saving on the asr.

  • @vinroc yes but can i store sounds on the scis zip drive.i aint saving the track on floppy i am laying them down on pro tools but i hate going trough floppy disk.to load just 1 sound. if the zip drive can hold my sound library that will be cool.thank you for your quick responce i really appreciate it...D-LUX

  • @djdeluxe101 yes of course. just label your folders correctly so you wont get mixed up. so create "Beat A" directory and put the sounds for that beat in that folder and then do everything else in your DAW..

  • @djdeluxe101 how do upload tracks from the asr-10 to your computer without saving the track on floppy? I don't have a zip drive but imma get one. i just bought a asr-10 about two months ago. i dont have pro tools. i have adobe audition 1.5. I have a usb i-mic. so i can record beats from my asr to my computer. Is there a way to drag and drop each instrument that i use for my beat on to my computer without recording each instrument by using my usb i-mic?

  • iono, the chopping can be done a lot faster w/ any software

but w/ time that i can see how it can be really efficient

BUT HOT DAMN THOSE DRUMS SOUND SO NICE ON THE ASR

i guess the sound of that thing really is a reason to buy it

do you have to do a lot to those drums to make them sound like that?

or do you filter it or something

like are u running effects on the drums and snares and those weird 808 things. or is it just like cheating

how do you get sounds on that?

    just computer to disk?

  • @robnhay I havnt come across anything that duplicates exactly what the ASR can do. chopping faster doesnt mean chopping better. Logic comes close though but editing said chop samples after the fact is tedious and messes with work flow...for myself anyway.

  • vin how did you get your drums and other instruments on the asr ? also is the asr the only system you use

  • @omd0 you gotta sample em..there should be videos on that on youtube. I actually am getting into a lot of computer based stuff but I still havnt found anything with quite the same functionality as the ASR..but they are gettin close..

  • this machine is better than any computer software.

  • Thanx man for the choppin samples part but i have problems with the sequencing because the timing of the loop won't restart on point.

  • glad I could help;)

  • Song is Sunshower by Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band

  • attention: does anyone know what the name of the song is ?? that hes sampling from ??

  • can you set it to a setting like on mpc "full levels" where the velocity you hit the key doesnt matter it plays at full velocity?

  • Yeah you can

  • This is fuckin audio science

  • hey im thinking of getting an asr but how do u save ur beats do u use a floppy or is it in the keyboard ?

  • nice video.

    informative.

  • Yo this really helped alot! Thanks

  • yo vin,

how do you have it so when you press the key it automatically plays the whole sample, as opposed to having to hold down the keys to play the whole thing?

  • dunno man..the dope part about the asr is that its setup like that. you can get an mpc and do the loop thing easy. but im sure the asr has a trigger once function, but ive never used it to make a beat.

  • goin to fast

  • can you make a video with your own songs...well the ones you fliped.......whats the name of that track duke?

  • Huge Help, Thank you bro

  • Hey! Thanks alot! You're a, well if not a life saver, a time saver! It works like a charm! At first I had problem with "No edit WS selected" but it turned out to be that I in the edit mode hade selected WS=ALL and not WS=1.

    Take care

  • You're a life saver man. had the same problem. Thanks.

  • dope.. to bad you cant do the same thing on eps.

gota keep sampling and assigning to key.. i gota mp to but love the feel and sound of them boards.

  • which EPS? the 16 or original... i used this tutorial for the EPS and it works... but some of the menus are in different areas.. like you have to use the KEY RANGE button near the SAMPLE button for assigning the high-low range of the key.. took a while to figure out.. i did it like a year ago so i forgot exactly what i did.. but i can try to remember.

  • everytime i press a button on my asr a number or question mark will come up. why?

  • I had the same problem some time ago until i gave it to a professional repair service specialized on old keyboards and workstations etc.

Don't what they changed, but it works again.

Now, until i had it working, it helped alot to just turn the ASR on and then wait for at least about half an hour. It used to work when the "engine" gets a little bit warm. Then just restart it. That often helped me...

  • @ killavon18

  • You can do that same thing 100 times faster, and with more control using FL. Not dissing the ASR. Used to own one, but damn, I get things done WAY FASTER.

  • very true. but there is a reason people hold on to their ASR 10's and I wanted to have some form of tutorial for it. an sp1200 is also out of date but some people still want one:)

  • Word, other than a few effects on that board I don't miss the ASR10 at all. Some people say it's the "sound", which I can understand with the SP1200 (12bit processing) but not the 16bit EPS 16+ and ASR10.

  • lol you are really bugging. nothing sounds better than a asr10 - nothing. sp1200 maybe for drums, but not the samples. plus you can do 100 times moe with asr than a sp.

  • I GOT IT! THANKS VINROC!!!!!

  • ASR-10 SCSI option board, i have one for sale on ebay... you will NOT be seeing this anytime soon so hop on it! Item #: 320366164341

  • This is a ill tutorial big ups to vinroc! im havn probs fittin some samples into the seq! some work perfect some even tho the samples on point still doesnt fit in the sequence what can i do plz can someone assist thanks!

  • Chop the sample and layer it throughout the keys.

  • What sample is that?

  • My asr-10 is on ebay! no watchers! low price!

    Item # 320359326117

  • Brilliant tutorial, man. Solid feedback, too.

  • What's a Scsi Card reader? And where do you get these?

  • This is one way of chopping on the ASR. Another way is to use the MAIN-OUT function. Say for example the sample is on track one, pick trk 2 as new inst. Then sample each of your parts from trk 1 to trk 2 using the main out. Layer them throughout the keys like you want it. Its alot faster than this method he's using. Its actually easier done than said.

  • does this really works? because you can't play instrument 1 when you sample!

  • yes now I got it, thank you!

  • COOL!!!

  • Press the Instrument 1 Button so that it lights red and yellow. You should here the sample once you go into sample mode, be sure that the Main-Out is on.

  • When I sample Stereo after copying the ASR just plays the left channel.

    Can you help me?

    Thank you.

  • yo dude i love the beat at the end. do u got a full song recorded to it? so we can peep

  • good lookin out.. nice walkthrough

  • Very helpful!!

  • hmmm.. i dont know. the only thing I thought it could be is that you are recording in stereo and only one input is clear. when you make a copy it makes a mono copy and its copying the problematic input. I dont know how else you are getting it to pan. It would have to be a internal problem if it is not that IMO.

  • try sampling mono in both channels to troubleshoot. it might be an input problem. try to adjust the audio input level in the back as well. I've had a problem with the inputs/outouts failing in the past. if one input fails, thats what might cause the distorted sound on one channel because it didnt get a proper record level. thats all I can think of at the moment in terms of a fix

  • Yo Vin, or anyone got a tube of EPS-16+?

i've been rocking that for a while but feel like i haven't dug into its potential.

    Dope vids- Analog Forever!

  • its almost the same machine. you can do pretty much the same that I am showing in this tutorial

  • souns lke some Bollywood stuff, but it's still ill

  • MIA sampled it so subconsciously you could be relating it.

  • is there such thing as a software that you can sample, like the asr 10, and assign different samples to keys on just an ordinary MIDI controller?

  • dude sick....where can u get one haha...and does it have preloaded drum samples that u were playing toward the end?

  • Vin-what if you want to save the chops to a disk for later arrangement. the ASR reads not enough disk space. what is your solution? Thanks,brotha...

  • need a zip drive bro..hopefully you have a scsi card installed. they are harder to find nowadays but im sure they are still floatin.

  • is there something like this keyboard out right now

  • Just got an ASR-10 about a month ago, just wanna say that I appreciate ya takin the time. I will owe my sampling success to you! Thanks man!

  • I've had my Asr 10 since the 90's but I never chopped on it. In fact I haven't touched it in a couple of years but, Your vid got me wanting to bring it back out ! I named myself after that board. This is the best tutorial i've seen on the Asr 10. Respect!!

  • jst got my asr10 but need help on how to get it starting...any one???precciate it

  • Quick Question...

can u have the samples on "Note-Off" or "Repeat" or "loop"??

    kinda like the MPCs??

  • its on note of by default..its much easier..notice I hold the key down for the sample to play longer and quick jabs to play it shorter...the feel is alot easier than the mpc when it comes to that. there is a loop and repeat but i never use em..

  • excellent tutorial and demonstration. great documentation. c'est superb!!!

  • this video is definitely helpful! thanks. i'm getting stuck on the actual sequencing process. for example: recording a four bar loop that is quantized, adding drums, etc...

  • thanks for choppin game, Vin

  • got mad gay hands hahha

  • it was more gay of you to notice a dudes hands but I'm flattered:)

  • This actually helped a lot. I'll be sure to come back to this vid once I get around to get an ASR 10. Thanks for the tutorial xD

  • Does the ASR work like the Juno G?

  • sick

  • well it can be done quicker once you get the hang of it like he says in the video. or you can do it old school style and skip the changing pitch stuff and copy wave sample stuff and just sample, assign key, rewind the record, sample, assign key...

  • nice. thats what i use the mpc for.

  • I actually did break a key once...congrats on ya asr and take care of it cuz there is only one repair guy as far as i know

  • the only guy i know with a website and contact info is thesoniq. luckily for me, i know in ardmore, a nice little 20 minute drive from my house in west philadelphia, who used to work for ensoniq from the early to late eighties. he replaced my floppy drive, fixed a few buttons, and replaced a key for a fairly decent price. if anyone wants his info let me know.

  • I like my asr 10 and am very comfortable with it. how long did you use one before you realized it wasnt for you? and very true about the sequencer. it can be problematic but you just have to know how to freak it. good luck with your music:)

  • Dr. Buzzards Original Savannah Band...one of my favorite songs, from one of my favorite albums..got this one on wax...

  • thanks man

  • i just want to know one thing please. is the asr easy to use? i got the mpc 1000 and im tryin to get an asr 10. thanks fam.

  • i had tha mpc 1000 tha red/ blue 1...im not sure if tha black 1 has any advantage but i got the asr 10 & i juss started 2 use it, tha effects is crazzzzy...but the sequencing is a pain in tha ass after u come from an mpc...but the two together is a good team

  • Timbaland carries his EVERYwere

  • thanks!

  • who made the asr

  • Ensoniq is the maker of the ASR 10

  • yes I agree. You can use the asr as a midi controller but my setup is complicated and old school so avoid the headache

  • just buy a midi controller for cheap

  • Comment removed

  • asr's are legendary, but a pain to master.

    Good vid, keep it up

  • Bought my ASR bout 4 months ago.with Manuals, some samples, scsi, zip, blue display, stand, bag all for $400. Couldnt pass up on that deal! But when I tried to learn dis mf'er...I just didnt hav the time to figure out erything by myself!Manual is useless unless u already hav some type of knowledge!

This lil vid gave me back my motivation! Thnx, fam! There is a lot more to learn than wots in the vid, but following ur example put sh.t in perspective.

So u wont see my ASR on ebay any time soon..

    thnx!

  • I feel blessed that I was able to help you and some other folks. good luck and enjoy makin some heat!

  • haha, same deal over here! my asr has been sitting for like 2 months! it's mad frusturating.

  • I also don't no how it works. I only figured how to spread 1 wavesameple accros the keys with the same pitch, this is done with the pitch table. But I can't find the ''copy wavesample on all keys'' so that you can chop them

  • I think there is a kid farther down the responses who says he knows how, I asked him but he never got back to me. sorry brederen.

  • I don´t know a automatic way to do that either, but after you have once copied and set the ranges for as many chops(keys) you like you can record over the original sample that you have copied (params only) so that the next sample automatically is devided from the same start and end points as the previous sample you recorde The sample should best be same lenght as the previous one.

  • Vinroc did you figure out how this works:

thats the hardway to chop in the asr u can push keyboard range and pick the 1st key and last key and have it copy the sample wavesample on all 61 keys then just go in and chop each one how u want

Could you write it down holla

  • actually no. could you post a response video so that everyone can see how to do it? or message me the directions and I'll make an updated video for everyone. thanks for helpin:)

  • yeah RZB1703 I think I hit you up before about how to copy a sample across the board but I couldn't figure it out. Can you give us a step by step (button by button?) response please? Props for Vin for his method though

  • Thanks for the inspiration dawg!

  • oh wow, asr does look really time consuming lol

    dope video

  • also...you might want to get a scsi drive so you can already have a the OS disk preloaded on a zip file prior to starting up your machine. fukkin love my asr...

  • I don't even make beats, but you inspired me man.

  • i'm splitting a stereo signal left and right and just using one of them. you have to sample in stereo if you want both channels. when you enter the sample screen you can "choose' to sample both channels if you please.

  • check it out i am sampling in stereo but when i copy wave sample and put the copy on the next key the first one becomes mono, fam this is really killing the workflow

  • I'm not sure..I only sample in mono...

  • what keyboard would be good to start off with cause i cant find that asr no were ..and what song is that that sound like some thing ghostface have use befor

  • Damn where were you when I had my ASR? Nice makes me wanna go back???

  • i had that problem too. turns out it needed work done. find an person who fixes ensoniq boards. and yes, you gotta load the os disc everytime. if you need a manual, holla at me, ill email it to you..

  • Awesome! I dont know that way. I put this up in hope of helping people get started with the asr. can you post some directions? I'd like to learn your method as well.

  • any stereo set of cables work. I'm actually runnin through a mackie board (left and right) from my dj setup and then into the asr.

  • Comment removed

  • so basically u sample from records and chop them up as drums and save them to ur asr? or do you save them in you zip discs? cuz i recently got an asr-10 but i'm limited on sounds especially drums.. wut should i do? thanks.

  • I save them to a zip drive

  • hey where'd u get ur drums from? are u using an scsi interface? a zip drive? or a cd-rom drive? thanks.

  • scsi zip drive.I make my own drum kits..from records and some syths. oh and I get em from some of my peoples too.

  • sure u can chop

  • Can U Chop On The ASR-10

  • hey vinroc what kind of piano your using on this video ..and where can i buy it ? please help me your a cool dude

  • Its called an ensonic ASR 10. look on ebay. thet are very heavy so expect to pay 100 bucks for shipping 700 or so for the keyboard.

  • the nnxt in reason can manipulate samples alot better..and it's a software, but you'd need recycle to chop it up. gud work though..peace from down unda

  • yes I've tried it...but I like the feel of this.I noticed I sound "different" using computer based stuff cuz its such a powerful tool.I guess for me its like the difference of something made by hand then by a machine.but if it gets the results you want then it doesnt matter what you use:)

  • fuck, sample chopping on the asr is a headache !!!

  • hey man, u gotta adjust record level. U r overloading.....

  • adjust is on the back of asr

  • That's the sample that Busta Rhymes used on his 1998 album E.L.E. Extinction Level Event. The track is called "Take It Off". I forgot what track number.

  • yes! good memory. I remember hearing that before but it didnt register till now. I think thats a pretty good version too;)

  • horrible song!!! but very informational!

  • lol.. yeah I just grabbed anything close by to do the tutorial..It's a ghostface sample though so in the spirit of hip hop I found it to be a useful record to use..

  • how was it flipped on the ghostface track im curious

  • not really flipped. it was an interpolation.. he basically took the sunshower melody. Probably the corniest part but its a fun melody. I think there somethin else on the record to. I see it in a lot of peoples collections, but I cant recall..

  • do you happen to know what the GF song is called?

  • ghostshowers... M.I.A also does a version of the song with the same title track [Sunshower - Dr Buzzards Original Savannah Band]

  • dope ass shit!!! props!

  • not sure I get it. please post a vid. Sounds like your way could be a shortcut. I've been using the asr for years and I dont know any other way. but perhaps thats where my fault lies. but since this is a tutorial demo I figure this is the most thorough way for folks to learn.

  • If you go to edit layer and scroll to pitch table, set it to "no pitch". This way all your resulting chops will have the same pitch as the root pitch of the first sample u took. Keep in mind this makes the root pitch c4, but all other copies will automatically be at a root of c4 from now on. So then after you do your hi and lo range for each chop, you don't have to bother with the root.

  • This is also beneficial when you wanna pitch all your chops within a layer down at the same time. Just make sure it says "all" instead of "ws#" in the edit menu, then you can edit the pitch of all your chops equally at the same time.

  • Awesome! Didnt know bout that. I will make a point to learn the method. I also like my way cuz you might find something by accident by hearing it pitched as well...but its good to know when I need a shortcut and I already know I will be just rearranging an existing sound.

  • ah haha im just kidden vin

  • Yo dope shit!

  • HAHAHAH!!!Thanks again Vin

  • what son you got something against black people? why you dont like black keys huh? huh?

  • hahahahaha...I will learn to be politically correct with the keys then=)
