He is quite the musician However, without a rythym section no solo can be had. Notes in Space...For the hell of it check out Marc Bonilla (predominant in the late 80's/early 90's) His style is the attraction point. Unique riffs rather than speed

IMO: Score's version of Spirit is much, much better than Live Scenes' version and is my #2. My list: 1. Through Her Eyes (Live Scenes), 3. Hollow Years extended (Budokan), 4. pretty much every bit from Ministry of Lost Souls, 5. the extended solo he played after Live in Tokyo's "To Live Forever," 6. The Count of Tuscany, 7. The Best of Times, 8. Breaking All Illusions, 9. Lines in the Sand live, and 10. Octavarium. I have trouble in particular naming any solos in history ahead of those top 5.

Petrucci rarley playes in the scales, especially not in the jazz-parts. Rarley a Dream Theater song has one tonality. He orientates his solos on the chords and notes the band plays. Of course, fast runs often are just scales, but he knows, when it fits to play them.

i am touched by his solos, like best of times, innocence faded, ministry of lost souls.. i also play a little guitar and try to write "epic" melodies, but it's really difficult. So whats your "definition" of soul?

@MichaelsPortraits are you mad John Pettrucci uses a lot more than just fast minor scales he does use very fast runs but he also uses amazing phrasing and many many other techniques and has great feel to his playing listen to him playing amazing grace to hear that. i admit he is not my favorite guitarist as that goes to Mr Vai but JP stil command great respect as a guitarist

nickleback is an amazing band where they use chords and easy rythms to make good sounding choruses and versus where as john petrucci uses complex rythms and scales to make well flowing music and solos they are both really good bands although i do agree dream theater is better at their instruments lyrically i do not enjoy the music but i listen to it for the guitar built talent

@TURnKEYiNK -- Well the difference is that in Dream Theater, every member is as good at their instrument as John is at guitar. Satriani's music obviously focuses mostly on guitars while DT showcases every instrument.

You could say Dream Theater has too much talent, in which case, go listen to some dumbed down arena rock like Nickelback or U2 instead.

I have to admit, John Petrucci is my all time favorite guitarist that can be classified as a "shredder." I personally dont look at Petrucci in that manner, but somehow he is looked at that way by some people. Petrucci is a deep person and guitarist, he shows it in his playing and he has a soul in his playing. He may have some solos that sound weird to an average ear, but it requires a different kinda person to enjoy it. "Lines in the sand" for example, has soul and technique which is amazing.

Some people just cant comprehend complex fast music, and cant detect the emotion in this type of music. It takes a very developed ear musically,because when you follow and understand what's happening then you can let the emotion come through to you and you'll feel it easily. That's why lesser musicians with less developed ear training usually like more simple music, because its so simple that there is no technique or speed to get in the way of hearing the emotion and doesnt distract from feel
