@EssexMetalHead: Yes ! Anyway, here in the Netherlands the "." stands for thousand-separator. And the comma is the decimal separator. So, € 1.234,45 is one thousand twohundredthirtyfour euros and fortyfive cents. It differs from the USA usage.
He is quite the musician However, without a rythym section no solo can be had. Notes in Space...For the hell of it check out Marc Bonilla (predominant in the late 80's/early 90's) His style is the attraction point. Unique riffs rather than speed
IMO: Score's version of Spirit is much, much better than Live Scenes' version and is my #2. My list: 1. Through Her Eyes (Live Scenes), 3. Hollow Years extended (Budokan), 4. pretty much every bit from Ministry of Lost Souls, 5. the extended solo he played after Live in Tokyo's "To Live Forever," 6. The Count of Tuscany, 7. The Best of Times, 8. Breaking All Illusions, 9. Lines in the Sand live, and 10. Octavarium. I have trouble in particular naming any solos in history ahead of those top 5.
in mine, it's when the music touches you. and i can really feel the pain of the girl on the waters edge and of victoria and the miracle or of portnoy when his father died.
a 13 years old would try to assure someone of his subjective opinion. not listen to petrucci.
Petrucci rarley playes in the scales, especially not in the jazz-parts. Rarley a Dream Theater song has one tonality. He orientates his solos on the chords and notes the band plays. Of course, fast runs often are just scales, but he knows, when it fits to play them.
i am touched by his solos, like best of times, innocence faded, ministry of lost souls.. i also play a little guitar and try to write "epic" melodies, but it's really difficult. So whats your "definition" of soul?
@heepdanny No ..I really mean it ..Petrucci has ZERO Soul ,Phrasing or feel in his playing...its just endless generic , textbook minor scales that we all know played as fast as possible ...He is just a horrendously bad Guitar player , I suppose if you are13 years old and don't know your ass from a hole in the ground you might think he is great
@MichaelsPortraits are you mad John Pettrucci uses a lot more than just fast minor scales he does use very fast runs but he also uses amazing phrasing and many many other techniques and has great feel to his playing listen to him playing amazing grace to hear that. i admit he is not my favorite guitarist as that goes to Mr Vai but JP stil command great respect as a guitarist
i really dont listen to dream theater or john ive mostly just seen his name mentioned a bunchh of times in various things,my favourite solo here had to be best of times
I read a comment on another video claiming that Petrucci was all technique and no passion. All I have to say to that person is "Take a good look at the first clip in this video, and then tell me that again"
nickleback is an amazing band where they use chords and easy rythms to make good sounding choruses and versus where as john petrucci uses complex rythms and scales to make well flowing music and solos they are both really good bands although i do agree dream theater is better at their instruments lyrically i do not enjoy the music but i listen to it for the guitar built talent
First solo is great, but if you want to hear it at its BEST look up "Dream Theater Score The Spirit Carries On" That's one of my favorite guitar solos ever there. And, he starts with a really cool clean solo.
Do Not put the Under a glass Moon solo and Lie solo from Awake is a blasfemi! just kidding John Petrucci is one of the greatest guitar players of all times it's hard to elegi the best solos, but here's my contribution! keep rocking
"shut the fuck up petrucci your solos gets boring after 5 seconds..." OK PEOPLE, I've chanced my mind.. this is actually pretty cool and he's a beast at guitar
I've heard of this guy, but I'm sure Zappa would be proud. I think he suffers from the same affliction as Satriani: too much talent. Good music isn't just about the Guitar and its player. Just my $0.02 (CND).
@TURnKEYiNK -- Well the difference is that in Dream Theater, every member is as good at their instrument as John is at guitar. Satriani's music obviously focuses mostly on guitars while DT showcases every instrument.
You could say Dream Theater has too much talent, in which case, go listen to some dumbed down arena rock like Nickelback or U2 instead.
I remember when I first watched Live scenes from New York, that Spirit carries on solo... holly shit... I was completely amazed, it's so emotive... one of the best guitar solos I've ever heard, even compared with Gilmour's Comfortably Numb solo...
I have to admit, John Petrucci is my all time favorite guitarist that can be classified as a "shredder." I personally dont look at Petrucci in that manner, but somehow he is looked at that way by some people. Petrucci is a deep person and guitarist, he shows it in his playing and he has a soul in his playing. He may have some solos that sound weird to an average ear, but it requires a different kinda person to enjoy it. "Lines in the sand" for example, has soul and technique which is amazing.

That's why lesser musicians with less developed ear training usually like more simple music, because its so simple that there is no technique or speed to get in the way of hearing the emotion and doesnt distract from feel
@skolnick14 This is without question the dumbest commentary I have ever heard in my life ...Are you aware of the concept of Note Choice and Phrasing , no matter how fast or slow one plays , that is all that is relevant , and for your information genius ,Petrucci plays right through the scale with evenly spaced notes, what could be easier than that ...any 12 yr old with a metronome can do what he does with a few hours practice a day....
@MichaelsPortraits No,what I said is right. You're just one of the people that I mentioned that isn't developed enough to understand it.Another jealous blues snob. There's plenty of emotion in his playing. His note choice and phrasing are superb. You just can't hear it because you're ear can't follow these fast lines.Once you can play like this you'll get it..keep practicing. And saying he always plays evenly shows you don't know much. There is plenty of syncopation in his playing.
I play guitar since I was 15, and now I'm 26,so I know what music is. Maybe I have more knowledge in music than everyone of you little brats...but that's not the matter.
I know that I'll never reach his level of technique, but honestly I don't give a fuck. Music is something else, is passion,is heart, and I can't find them here. I don't want to play at 300 bpm like he does, because it's only a stupid display of sterile technique without heart.
@OMBROU then you should watch the first solo in this video carefully, and also check octavariums last solo and youll see what passion is
i know petrucci doesnt show much emotion when playing but these fast solos are just to show he can play faster than no one. when he plays those beautiful melodies he may not feel a shit but brings more feelings to me than any other music
AGAIN check octavarium, the full song, especially the solo, is a masterpiece
@SebaChannel I understand your position, but just let me say that IMHO speed hasn't a fuck to do with Music. Yes,it's important for the technique, and you can't call yourself a musician if you aren't also a fast executioner,but...I mean, I like10 times more a very slow Gilmour's solo....
@OMBROU I have 23 and play since 5 years, age is nothing, and petrucci have SO MUCH feelings, if you can see's because your 11 years of music is nothing... "/
@C4rc455 World is a free place. If I don't like something, can I say that I don't like it? Or I must stay quiet and follow the ideas of the many???? I don't like Petrucci, for me that's just a drill, not a guitar solo,ok? if you all have to follow the opinions of the majority without complaining, it's not my problem. I can say what the fuck I want, and now I'm saying that I don't like Petrucci.
Avete rotto i coglioni. Fa schifo,non è musica,non serve a un cazzo suonare a 300bpm, ignoranti.
@OMBROU If you don't like, it's ok, but don't say that you are more experient in music and because this you don't like and that JP don't have musical feelings, don't say shit, if you don't like him, just say: "I don't like when JP play"
Someone please tell me he has more than 10 solos?

Just my opinion,btw... :)
