  • Hello Mr. Duns :) I was wondering if you could do a tutorial on this?? it's so hard to learn by sheet if you usually play by ear :/

Would love to see a tutorial on that one!!

    Greetings

    Manuel S.

  • Oh the irony in this video. The tin-whistling priest playing "the musical priest." I am well amused.

  • fair play father! (:

  • Hi. Is that one of Erle Bartlett's Syn Whistles?

  • sososoo beautiful!! You are a priest too? that fits the song =)

    God bless you!

  • Oh excellent!! is this a tin whistle in D?

  • Hello From Mexico, Father Ryan

Where Can Find the Sheet Music Of This Song?

Sorry For my Imperfect english :P

  • Love it ! when I play it , it doesn't go that fast though

    hahaha :D

  • Majestic god has given you a gift :)

  • Amazing! You've got talent brother! :)

  • Your smile is lovely at the end! :)

  • Lovely! You play amazingly, really rousing stuff. I've been playing for a few years but I'm not nearly that good. Would love for you to give me some tips! :)

  • i like your style of playing in this tune very colourful tal baby Roy eire 32

  • woww your perfect ;)

  • what key are you playing with? Is that a special kind of tin whistle or anything? I have a Pennywhistle in the key of C.. I find it hard to play higher notes on it ..

  • I will start to learn the Tin Whistle soon. This is great!

  • True Musical Priest :)

  • which tin whistle is that? it sounds lovely and i want one too

  • umm not one for the whole priest thing but i love the melody cuz sounds irish :)

  • how do you whistle used?

  • the musical priest...hahaha tht cud be a good name for u, father. excellent music. Up th Bronx :)

  • Ryan, I have listened to your version of "The Musical Priest" 100 times, but cannot for the life of me figure out the beautiful ornamentation in the first bar of the first part. Do you give away your secrets? Thanks so much from an aspiring whistler.

  • I absolutely love watching this video! :) You really give and image to this great reel.

  • you play it so beautiful, all notes are super clean.. amazing :D

  • oh WOWEEE :D

  • great style dude! perfect tune for you too! =D

  • Superb. This is the epitome of a beautifully played irish reel. Metronomic rhythm. Nice embellishment and variation. I'm practicing this reel hard, one day I might get it as good as that.

  • One of the best whistle player I've heard on Youtube, very impressive.

  • Can anyone tell me if a cheap tin whistle differs in sound quality from a more expensive one? I have a cheap Waltons, but the high tones and the "cut" techniques seem to work bad on that whistle. perhaps i'm doing this wrong, but I just wonder if a better whistle could provide a more accurate wind flow.

  • oh my gosh yes u can tell

  • Not necessarily. If you don't want to spend on an expensive tin whistle, the cheap whistle is already good on is own. In tin whistling, price may not be 100% directly proportional to quality. You can get a cheap whistle which actually plays well on its own, or do modifications to make it sound better. Paddy Maloney has been playing his own tweaked Generations for a long time, and still are his favourite whistles.

  • Lovely rendition of an awesome song. I especially like the embellishments.

  • ahhh, the life of a priest is a busy one

  • You've been playing for 20 years ... well, thanks for sharing your talent on You Tube. Your music is wonderful for driving away cares.

  • Did this guy appear in an episode of Father Ted...?

  • That is so beautiful. Do you ever play the whistle in the church services? That would be cool.

  • Waaaah why can't I play like that!? Last year I decided I was going to learn the tin whistle... it lasted three months before my parents banned me from practicing. My dad even confiscated my whistle and tried to wreck it. XD

  • I'm loving the irony, the musical priest is playing "musical priest"....hehehehe

  • I thought that, he does it justice too.

Now we need a version of the Fair Haired Child played by a fair haired child and then perhaps strike the gay harp by a gay harpist...

  • i wish i could sound like that, but i can't seem to figure out how to fit in embellishes like rolls and hits, etc..

  • amazing

    you sound really good

  • I would like to know what kind of Whistle you play... Btw. wonderful play!

  • Amazing! Wow, I can't believe such wonderful music can be produced by such a simple instrument. It sure doesn't sound that way when I play it! ;-)

Thanks for the instructional videos they really do help!

  • i just cannot close my mouse.......

  • Breathtaking skill & beauty and fills me with awe.

Hearing this as a female, I wish I was a man (rare for me!)and could follow your course - for I don't think I'd be able to exemplify my love for God though the beauty & transcendence of music (especially Celtic!) as Sister.

Anyway, thank you Father. May you rock on and may the Lord be with you.

  • your an amazing musician! any chance youd come to Ireland and teach me?? :P:L

  • schön

  • Rock it Rev!! Good job!

  • Awesome....Done very well...

  • Thanks Fr. I loved it - so natural a gift and so lovely of y'to share it with us!

    Slan duit grainne Orm.

  • I just CANT LEARN THE TWISTS!!!

  • O_O that was amazing thankyou...

  • Oh man...It's wonderful! Thank you for all of the university videos! Helps a lot!

  • I like the ornamentation you use for this tune, which I'm actually struggling to learn at this point.

A few of my dancers might also get a kick out of this. (They've created an Irish dance dramatization of their First Communion for a "costume reel" competition and are hoping the musicians will play this tune for that.)

  • Wowie.

  • Thats excellent! Just an idea, but a tutorial version of this wud be great. This is a good song for the more advanced player to learn but just a bit hard to follow the finger work at speed over streamed video. Many thanks for all the resources you've put up here for us to use!!

  • teehee... musical priest... by the musical priest... i honestly thought that would be the punchline of like every comment lol

  • Nice touch, putting on the black for "The Musical Priest":-). Seriously, you are awesome. I listen to people like you and Bergin, and wish I was born Irish.

  • wonderful!

  • As a fellow Catholic and an Irish decendant I must say you're awesome!! I started playing after I heard you on youtube. I love the tinwhistle! You rock!!

  • great stuff! Thanks so much for posting - I'd love to play the tin whistle - how long have you been playing for?

  • About 20 years!

That being said, try out the tutorials I put online - hopefully they'll be helpful!

  • fantastic padre

  • Fantastic and a good choice of tune too.

  • Wow. I would give anything to play that well. Well, I would give ALMOST anything. Very nicely done, indeed.

    ~Megan

  • I *just* posted a video on breathing. You're right, too: this tune is wicked on breathing.

  • I can't get enough of this.

  • Hey. Thanks for anwering my request on this one. I use this tune as a warm up because I find the fingerings a little awkward. And then I play it at twice the speed! My major weakness these days is finding good periods in which to breathe. Do you teach breathing pauses?

  • Excellent! I just ordered my first whistle from online ans should have it shortly. Can't wait to learn to play. I've always loved the sound of a tin whistle. You're excellent btw! -Russ

  • very good, i really like your ornamentations.
