do you use a D whistle, im trying to learn but its hard to by ear, ive got most of the other ones but this ones quite difficult, any advice or what whistle to use, im using my shaw at the moment
Lovely! You play amazingly, really rousing stuff. I've been playing for a few years but I'm not nearly that good. Would love for you to give me some tips! :)
what key are you playing with? Is that a special kind of tin whistle or anything? I have a Pennywhistle in the key of C.. I find it hard to play higher notes on it ..
Ryan, I have listened to your version of "The Musical Priest" 100 times, but cannot for the life of me figure out the beautiful ornamentation in the first bar of the first part. Do you give away your secrets? Thanks so much from an aspiring whistler.
Superb. This is the epitome of a beautifully played irish reel. Metronomic rhythm. Nice embellishment and variation. I'm practicing this reel hard, one day I might get it as good as that.
Can anyone tell me if a cheap tin whistle differs in sound quality from a more expensive one? I have a cheap Waltons, but the high tones and the "cut" techniques seem to work bad on that whistle. perhaps i'm doing this wrong, but I just wonder if a better whistle could provide a more accurate wind flow.
Not necessarily. If you don't want to spend on an expensive tin whistle, the cheap whistle is already good on is own. In tin whistling, price may not be 100% directly proportional to quality. You can get a cheap whistle which actually plays well on its own, or do modifications to make it sound better. Paddy Maloney has been playing his own tweaked Generations for a long time, and still are his favourite whistles.
Waaaah why can't I play like that!? Last year I decided I was going to learn the tin whistle... it lasted three months before my parents banned me from practicing. My dad even confiscated my whistle and tried to wreck it. XD
Breathtaking skill & beauty and fills me with awe.
Hearing this as a female, I wish I was a man (rare for me!)and could follow your course - for I don't think I'd be able to exemplify my love for God though the beauty & transcendence of music (especially Celtic!) as Sister.
Anyway, thank you Father. May you rock on and may the Lord be with you.
I like the ornamentation you use for this tune, which I'm actually struggling to learn at this point.
A few of my dancers might also get a kick out of this. (They've created an Irish dance dramatization of their First Communion for a "costume reel" competition and are hoping the musicians will play this tune for that.)
Thats excellent! Just an idea, but a tutorial version of this wud be great. This is a good song for the more advanced player to learn but just a bit hard to follow the finger work at speed over streamed video. Many thanks for all the resources you've put up here for us to use!!
Nice touch, putting on the black for "The Musical Priest":-). Seriously, you are awesome. I listen to people like you and Bergin, and wish I was born Irish.
As a fellow Catholic and an Irish decendant I must say you're awesome!! I started playing after I heard you on youtube. I love the tinwhistle! You rock!!
Hey. Thanks for anwering my request on this one. I use this tune as a warm up because I find the fingerings a little awkward. And then I play it at twice the speed! My major weakness these days is finding good periods in which to breathe. Do you teach breathing pauses?
Excellent! I just ordered my first whistle from online ans should have it shortly. Can't wait to learn to play. I've always loved the sound of a tin whistle. You're excellent btw! -Russ

Hello Mr. Duns :) I was wondering if you could do a tutorial on this?? it's so hard to learn by sheet if you usually play by ear :/
Would love to see a tutorial on that one!!

Now we need a version of the Fair Haired Child played by a fair haired child and then perhaps strike the gay harp by a gay harpist...
