It's not funny when it happens to you.... only 3 weeks ago my partner and I were riding his 20 yr old, pristine, FLH pursuit glide Harley on a winding country road in NE LA. I was taking photos and took 4 successive shots of a cotton field we were passing. We saw NO deer anywhere. The fourth shot I captured a very large buck jumping out of the ditch and into our bike at 40mph. We both got nasty road rash, but no broken bones or head injuries. We walked away. Most don't. Bike and camera trashed.

I dont think they were going too fast, you are right, there is very little you can do when they run in front of you, I have hit two deer, I live in the Highlands of Scotland and its a constant threat. My best advice is to brake as hard as you can but always in a straight line, people always seem tempted to swerve away from te deer, this means that you are really just driving into its path. This also increases the risk of you putting the car into a slide or hitting someone coming the other way.

Same thing happened to me in my car, I was flying along and it ran right into the side of my car, I almost drove into an 8 foot ditch trying to miss it anyway. Now I drive a nervous 80 on roads I used to do a cool headed 120mph on. I'd have gone faster previously but I only ever drive stock beater cars. Thank God that rider is ok, stay safe everybody, this can happen to ANYBODY I don't care how good you are. Imagine trying to stop that motorcycle after the deer enters the frame.

Hitting a deer on a motorcycle is serious business. I had one T-bone me while driving 30 mph and did $4,000 worth of damage. I was lucky and did not get hurt. I know of people who have had deer hit them and die as a result. It amazes me that deer will run from predators, but will run right into a noisy moving vehicle with a headlight. I guess that is why herbivores are what's for dinner, not too smart.

Had this nearly happen to me! 150+mph tebay north England! Mega fast straight road and a deer jumps out of forest. It might of been a couple of hundred meters away, but at that speed it felt like 2 ft lol. Luckily it just bounced once off the road and i missed it! My arse was twitching like a rabbits nose!

Happened to me in 2006... Triumph Sprint 1050. Small deer bigger bike but the forks were still bent and all the plastic came off. Full armored gear including the shin guards that kept me from a broken leg. DIdn't go down, luckily. Never ride without full gear, even in my small town because you never know.

You should go do a track day with your buddies, get back on the bike man, and have some fun... @5554283 granted, I have moved away from the big city with the overpopulated highways, but my bike was stolen from storage several years ago, I love riding, but just never replaced my CB. Not sure I would want one of the new street bikes, but a buddy of mine bought a Ducati, and loves it, races it in Alberta, me on the other hand, If I bought another bike ( a non resto job) it would likely be a streetable dirt bike, but I have been tempted to "borrow" the Ducati a few times, god forbid I crash!
