Their motivation would need to come from something else, like a political ideology. For one there doesnt have to be because thats exactly what it is, a doctrine - a set of beliefs that may be opposing to others (basically a religion) Second, someone can kill someone else for any reason. @ubermons I do know what an atheist is thank you, my parents used to be atheists themselves thanks to the Communist government in power at that time. Communists parties admitted that they do preach about seperating church from state, and even banning religion from being practiced in public. As I was taught in History that Marx states that religion is the opium of the people. They launch massive slaughters of priests, nuns, rabbis etc. since it was their plan to create a supposedly better world.

The word was first used in ancient Greece, but it only came to have its current meaning around 500BC. Whether it was coined by a theist, I have no idea and neither do you. It probably was - the ancient Greeks were religious.

Religion based on rational world, I guess buddhism is the closest one, because 1 part of them (They have some sort of protestant/catholic split) have no deity. They don't believe in god and Buddha was just a wise guy with many good ideas. Like how to behave properly, be accepting and such thing. Well, that might be to oversimplify it, but take a look. I'm an agnostic who do not believe in god, and I'm actually considering joining. And it's the most human friendly thing out there :P

I'm astounded at how widespread this myth is in the US and I can only blame the cold war for this when anti-communist propaganda was at it's finest. It's very hard to refute it here because the psychological and social factors that were involved are complex and cannot by any reasonably intelligent person be simply reduced to "that's cuz they didn't believe in gawd!". I've never heard such an uneducated argument from any european, even in my country where more than 90% of people are catholics.

North koreans apparently believe that the shipments of food aid that we send them to keep them from starving to death are actually devotional offerings to Kim Jong-il. Is too much skeptical inquiry what is at fault here? I guarantee to you, there's not a single country on this planet that suffered
because it's people became too reasonable; too reluctant to embrace an idea on insuficient evidence. And that's all what atheism represents.

The problem with communist and other political regimes is not that they were too critical of
religion; the problem is they're too much like religions. These are utterly dogmatic ideologies whereby any independent thought is discouraged and criticism is silenced; exactly like in a faith based cult. Stalin, Mao tse-tung and Hitler were trying to present themselves to their people as gods with characteristics such as infallibility, power and wisdom.
