  • I love this woman

  • she was a phenomenal singer

  • wow, she looks really nice, love them earrings x

  • what is there to dislike?

  • She gave you realness.

  • she was bipolar, everyone if you cannot say anything nice, then dont say anything at all.

  • wow! i just decided to look at this interview of her and realized it was recorded on 7/15 and today is 7/15. strange.

  • What a beautiful woman!!!!!! I miss you Phyllis!!!!! : (

  • Cancers have a hard time with emotions... Everything Everything is emotions, how we eat, feel, and think... How i wished she was able to use her outlet (music) to heal herself, as i do... RIP

  • beautiful woman ! R.I.P

  • She was extremely intelligent and talented but was battling her own internal turmoil.

  • some for some reason i feel like most people that r emotional roller coasters r very talented especially when it comes to music and art. rip Phyllis Hyman. another star that burned bright but short.

  • wow. i feel her on emotional high and lows except my moon in taurus but crazy mercury and venus in sag clash with my scoprio sun at times. she is a beautiful woman.

  • Jazmine Sullivan looks so much like her. Seriously.

But I kinda feel bad for Phyllis. it just seemed like she was extremely sensitive to the outside world and couldn't function at times.

  • this woman was absolutly beautiful. very sad that her life was cut short. I'm sure shes in heaven singing with the angels. RIP

  • She was only Gay because she couldn't find Love....

  • @TheAristote69 umm, there's a magazine called "Oui" where she posed tastefully topless, and she said that she sometimes looks at pictures of women, fantasizing. Umm, I wouldn't say that she's "gay" because she couldn't find love. She's bisexual because she liked women.... She fooled around wit women cause she wanted to, but PREFERRED to date, love, and be married to a man, like plenty other women who are bisexual.

  • @Super88Cece thank you for makeong it so clear to those who couldn't allow their brain to expanded past their own opinions ;)

  • She is so beautiful. I wish she could have seen that.

  • for some reason she kind of remind me of kimora lee simmons.

  • If I was old enough for Phyllis I woulda tracked her down back then and ya'll woulda still been hearing her music today cuz she wouldn't be dead. MAN she was fine!!! And her voice could not be matched. What a woman and a gift that was slowly destroyed by her demons. DAG!!!

  • I still have her music on my iPhone/iPod...greatness where no one else could touch! Miss u sista but u live on in my heart! RIP

  • wow she was a cute as a button...truly missed

  • who cares if she was a lesbo....she could sing her ass off...BEYONCE could not even wipe her ass....

  • @darrylhaynes lmao! i like that

  • Boy she had so much in life going on...just sometimes help is just not enough. Smh..

  • What a beautiful gift that was lost. I miss you Phyllis, i miss your voice, and your funny side. Your music will live on in all of us that loved you.

  • I miss you Phyllis H! RIP! No one is perfrect under the sun! forgive and compassion will only bring peace to the earth, it's not to late for~ Humanity!

  • Her story saddened me so. When people are that depressed they just want the pain to stop.

  • Her features r sooo exaggerated ( meaning absolutely beautiful) stunning woman RIP girl!

  • Learn from the life of this gifted woman.

  • What a beautiful woman!

  • Phyllis was so BEAUTIFUL

  • My Mother did just that she live and she live to see all her children grown and able to take care of ourself. That was her pray to god. And god answered her prayer.

  • My mother did not kill herself but i alway knew she had it very hard when i was a child trying to raise 8 children alone. But i know she did a great job considering the odds of doing just that. She always said i would like to live long enough to see my children grow up and be able to take care of themself she never wanted to die and live us alone to be care for by some one else RIP mother and RIP Phyllis.

  • My Mother was a cancer and she had emotional up and downs also. My mother was very beautiful a beautiful woman and she had a lot of pain inside. My father died in 1961 and she was left with 8 children 3 boys and 5 girls and i was the youngest he died when i was one year old. But my mother never remarried not because she was so in love with my father but because she never thought a man could love her children and having 5 girls she did not want to take that chance. She died a very sad lady.

  • @evangelinem767 How did she die if u don't mind me asking

  • @11940ful She committed suicide. She was really depressed and very overweight according to reports.

  • @write2ap The question was for someone else that talked about their mother dying, i was not talking about phyllis

  • Damn she was beautiful...I could have easily fallen in love with her...

  • aww so sad.. why is she in such pain? she 's beautiful and has a sweet spirit.

  • WHY, oh, WHY did she feel that she had to kill herself?

  • Stunning. Voice. Beauty. Height. Stage Presence. Realism. Legend.

  • She had a bi-polar disorder plain & simple. Astrology is nonsense and had nothing to do with it. If she had gotten a good doctor lithium probably would have helped but who knows, depression is no walk in the park it is a daily fight and not everyone is strong enough to overcome it.

  • I loved Phyllis Hyman - My heart goes out to her, she was wonderful, and very honest and real. I wish she had been able to be with us longer, for better medications were developed years after her death for Bi-Polar - Manic Depressive illness. She was a gift and we should be grateful for the time we had her. All my love Phyllis -

  • Something seems soooooo strange about her death now that I have seen this vid clip. And just another clip with her talking about people in the industry who got over on her. Its funny because most artist never name who got over in them. As if these people are somehow a shadow. I don't believe she was the cause of her own death. She seems likely to be the cause of the story that was told after her death. She says she was high or low no in between whch left many to believe suicide & not murdered

  • Wow, very interesting... and sad. RIP

  • 1 of my best friends struggled w/ depression plus is a cancer. please dont b offended cancers, b/c i dont think it's ur fault. but i think u need some sort of meds/ holistic alternative 2 keep u balance b/c u can go from night 2 day in a matter of seconds then back again. it hit her later in life 2 realize it's more than mood swings. she is not the only cancer i no who had difficult since childhood. but his mom went 2 holistic doc & he gave him a simple vitamin called niacin & been fine since

  • She is so well spoken very elegant speaker.

  • Was she crying in the start of the video? She was such a pretty and inspiring people. If I didn't know she was going through something I would have never guessed it. I guess you can't always judge a book but it's cover..

  • Comment removed

  • @noonic23

She's crying because -- in the earlier part of the video she talked about how the person who wrote one of her songs died of cancer & about others she had known and lost in life.

  • @APGifts Oh Thanks :)

  • @xxdiogenescynicxx . wow! what an ignorant comment. individuals believe in what they chose to believe in. "it's a good thing she is dead"? careful, the universe has a way of making things happen to idiots like your self..

  • @xxdiogenescynicxx

    You're the Devil.

  • @xxdiogenescynicxx wow, I'm just shocked at your fucking ignorance! what a cold, STUPID thing to say..I HATE people like you.

  • @xxdiogenescynicxx darling your the idiot..."horoscopes" is a tip of a larger mathematical science called astrology...the dumb sounds like you...you'll wak up one day

  • @xxdiogenescynicxx

May you get kidnapped and thrown onto a damp highway naked and handcuffed.

  • Ok, ok, i'll be nice and stop saying "she was a nut" and be more sensitive to her plight and fate. If I offended any of her fans, I apologize to you. I, too, am a fan but what I said wasn't nice. I just miss her, that's all, because music is dead right now and her being gone has left a void. Once again, I apologize.

  • The highs and then extreme lows she is talking about is called Bi-Polar Disorder. She was suffering from that as well but her sister sought treatment and meds and reports that she has been doing well (on Phyllis Hyman Unsung). Unfortunately this beautiful lady didn;t get treatment. She self medicated with cocaine, alcohol and over indulgence in food. Before a show she OD on sleeping pills and left a note that simply said "I'm tired. Those of you who I love you know who you are"

  • is it me or does beyonce get alot of her ideas from her???? She is the true essence either way.

  • RIP Phyllis - you are sadly missed - one of the true great soul artists . Forever a star!

  • A very sensitive and intelligent woman. Seems like she understood life on it's own terms.

  • Such a waste of beauty and talent...gone too soon..r.i.p P.H. :[

  • She was a nut. She was fine. Talented. All of the above. But she was still a nut. I don't care what obstacles she had. She was still a nut. I miss her voice and music. But she was still a nut.

  • @lwm762 its very disrespectful to talk about the dead like that. they're not here to defend themselves.

  • @lwm762 she was bipolar, not a nut. stop being ignorant and disrespectful. that has to do with chemical imbalances in the brain, not just something a person can just get over.

  • @lwm762 what a fucking ignorant thing to say! how the hell can you say you like her but call her a nut in the same sentence..are you kidding me?!?!

  • She's revealing herself at a time when this was not cool to be so open. A truly bright spot of talent gone too soon,

  • She is a real woman in person and on wax

  • it would be nice if people stopped comparing Beyonce to Phyllis, Beyonce is now what the media and the audience want to see, just like Phyllis was a to hers. Im only 21. My father let me listen to Phyllis's voice. She is class, because class is what people wanted in those days. The Sade's and the Anita Baker's. That is class, thats why I at 10 and 11 knew all these songs by heart. but we cannot forget that our music artist give us and the media what we want to see and will spend our money on.

  • @emijio23 what does it say about our culture though when the product that is being offered is so inferior to what was put out in the past?

Are we in a muscial dark ages right now because it's obvisous that the renaissance has passed?

  • @emijio23 You are so correct. I think the comparison comes in because Beyonce's noteriety is great whereas Phyllis never reached that plato even though without question Phyllis was more GIFTED and Talented. It just appears that Phyllis was blackballed especially when it came to air play.

  • @vmccarty1055 Phyllis wasn't blackballed. She was in a niche that didn't have lots of radio stations to play her music. There was no "Quiet Storm" format back then. Oil prices caused many artists their fan base because the companies were selective at who they would record. Takes oil 2 make records. Phyllis got play when Gladys and many others didn't. She was a session singer as well. Have voice. will travel. Packaging sucked then as well as now. There's plenty of fans to go around, right?

  • My all time fave Soul Singer, saw her perform concert live in London in the 80s best one I ever went to. So sad she's gone now!

  • lovely lady...great voice...but oh so emotionally fragile..forget the astrology crap she needed professional help....a real shame.

  • Comment removed

  • I love this woman, she was so talented. I only wish she knew what she meant to so many of her fans. sigh

  • @loroach total agreement

  • Phyllis said show me... this was a really interestingly good interview

  • she was so beautiful, and the voice of an angel, i miss her completely, on another note i never noticed she almost has whats known as a cleft lip, interesting, but back to the point her suicide shows that loving yourself and fame have nothing to do with each other

  • I remember when I first heard Phyllis in the mid 70's. I thought to myself that she was another Sarah Vaughn or even Lena Horne.

I had a SERIOUS "crash" on her, as I was just a teenager.

But, I knew TRUE Beauty & Talent when I saw it.

I have the box set of her music. U can't BUY it off me! It's timeless music that will never die with me.

I cherish her songs and the African "goddess" she was.

  • I remember this interview, she was so beautiful but she always wanted people to love her, I miss Ms. P. Now I'm going to play some Phyllis

  • Beautiful, only God and she knows why she took her own life. RIP.

  • how beautiful . Does anyone know how old she was in this interview?

  • I heard that Phyllis could cook her ass off too!

  • Phyllis was just simply beautiful.

  • Comment removed

  • @espiritu69guerrero Yeah, that is moodiness..she was bipolar, WAY different than moodiness

  • @apolloniasixer bipolar? im a cancer male & i have a strong overstanding of what feelings she described.

  • its always the most beautiful people who call themselves ugly.. wasnt there people like by her side? she said in almost every interview she was sad and depressed, i guess people didnt pay attention R.I.P

  • Loving her astro-savvy! So wish she could have strategy counseling and coaching through those shoals! What a LOSS to us and for her!;-(

  • What nationality is she?anyone know

  • @softspoken44 She's biracial..mother white, father black

  • Its call Bi Polar now..... She just had absolutely NO IDEA what a gift she was and How beautiful she is........ breaks my heart...........

  • @truvillionaire Do you know there is no scientific diagnosis or treatment for bi-polar. It's a guessing game, which is why there are so many misdiagnosis and faulty treatments.

  • I loved Phyllis, remember seeing her a lot on South St. in Philly.

Not judgeing her at all but I know without a doubt that Jesus Christ would've set her free and have given her peace. We don't have to be bound by the enemy's tricks on zodiac, horoscopes, suns, moons, and that kind of stuff.

    Miss you Phyllis.. (kisses)

  • I wish more people would have seen the pain in her eyes and in her heart, and could have helped her, before she took herself out of this world. This was a beautiful woman, with a beautiful spirit and one hell of a voice. She deserved much, much, much, much better than what she got here and what she ultimately decided for herself. I miss her very much and I thank you for posting this.

  • This was a beautiful lady and she could sing. Rest in peace

  • her features remind me of my mother back in the day...ahh RIP to both of them :(

  • RIP, Phyliss Hyman..... You left us tooooo soon

  • Wow...2:08-2:11 now if that wasn't sexy, then I don't know what sexy is. Damn she was fine, but gone too soon. Here's to you, Phyllis.

  • yes sir

  • I also love how she's just being real, sitting there talking to the reporter like she's her girlfriend keeping it real and being the star that she is. I wish other star -cough- BEYONCE and others could be real and laid back like this. not like robots saying what people want to hear.

  • its a totally different industry than back then. and beyonce starting off probably couldnt say what she wanted. but dont blame her for not wanting anyone in her business b/c the paps are totally diff too

  • @GeorgiaPeach87 I dig what your saying, but thats why BEYONCE is a star she consistantly works at it. She knows just what to say and how to say it. You know, she can always be real with her husband, friends, and family but to the public she works at being a STAR. Isn't that kind of what we expect?

  • @Gorgeouscorliss Obviously you do not understand the world of mental illness. You are talking about 2 different personalities; Beyonce has strong confidence in herself and she love herself; Phyllis did not and it came thru in her music, listen to the words she is saying.

  • @GeorgiaPeach87 Georgia, you ain't never lied!!!!

That is so very true...So True!

She had such a strong personality, so strong....i wish that she was here.

    Great Commentary Sis...

  • @GeorgiaPeach87 I feel ya!

  • @GeorgiaPeach87 ....lol "cough"...lol exactly.

  • Her eyes, her lips, that face! ahhhhh just gorgeous she was! but that doesnt' matter because Phyllis was hurting deeply inside and I cannot judge her for what she did, all I can say is that I wish someone would have really gotten her better help and that I love her and her music! rest in peace

  • poor thing, we have the same moon and rising.

  • Never heard of her till today-not my kinda music; was bisexual-- double the heartache! Even looked like Billie Holiday in some pix. I Listened. GREAT, warm, sad voice.

  • Hey how does being bisexual mean anything.....you add that in your quote like that "explained" who Phyllis was. In my opinion your an ASSHOLE w/ a small mind. Phyllis's voice is one of the VERY BEST EVER. She sang with DEEP emotion and passion.

  • Boy, Mike. Your reaction says everything about YOU. I was just letting people know. It means nothing to me, only that she could have had more lovers possibly and more heartache.

  • i have to agree, being bisexual back then was NOT NEARLY as acceptable back then as it it now. this could have caused her to endure more than she was even able to discuss and be real about. from the looks of this video she seemed like it was in her nature to just be real so to speak, and because it was unnatural for her to hide a certain part of herself this could have also added pressure that lead to her demise...that poor woman

  • Thanks, AM. Tho even in this time I was /erased just for bringing it up!

  • @amastara Maybe that's why she couldn't meet a man..it's hard to give yourself to a man when deep inside you are a lesbian

  • @apolloniasixer my point exactly

  • @apolloniasixer she was dating my cousin. i met her. so she could meet men. what is deep inside someone?

  • She was dianosed as Bipolar. They face so many different emotions, how very sad to see someone go through that. She was a beautiful elagent woman.

  • Wow....she just cried out of nowhere...it's horrible what depression does to ppl =/

  • no she didnt cry out of nowhere......on a previous part of the interview they were talking about a very emotional subject and the death of a close friend of hers through cancer.........

  • Okay I didn't see that part of the interview...thanks for clearing that up =D Though I have seen her just cry out of the blue...she did it in a video I forget for which one but it's painfully obvious that she was an unhappy woman. She was bipolar and it's sad because she was so beautiful and talented. It's unfortunate, it really is

  • She was such a beautiful woman.

  • Luv ya, Ms. Hyman. I would have given you all the love you needed. As long as I could hear that voice, I'm good.

  • I was alway worried about Phyllis Hyman. I went to see her once in Detroit and feel in love with her. I could always see her pain even when she was faking happiness. I wanted so bad to reach out to her as I listen to her songs she always seemed to crying out for help to me. I was not shocked when her life came to an end. I still miss her so and I wish I could have been one of her close friends I would have protected her. Phyllis you are still loved. Now you can rest. Peace be with you!

  • NO faith looks nothing like phyllis hyman.

  • sad she killed herself

  • that's crazy so kicked her off the sign whit that bad buzz to do to someone. she should have cussed them out ....

  • i was only one years old when she died. even though i never knew her, i miss her music a lot.

  • Gotta say it ... Besides her obvious, incredible talent, I've always felt that Ms. Hyman was the most perfectly beautiful woman to grace the face of the Earth.

Hope that doesn't come across as "shallow".

RIP Ms. Hyman ... you will never be forgotten

  • love u rip ms hyman

  • I luv you. R.I.P.

  • shes fuckin magnetic to me. seriously..i find her soooo attractive.

  • still love her, even in death!

  • SHE IS BEAUTIFUL!!! Her skin, her eyebrows, the lips, her hair, her flair for fashion. How she lets the makeup compliment her features, it's not all caked up like others. I betcha she has the sweetest scent. I love in the very beginning how she opens her eyes wide and then squints.

  • @pcockpro hahahaha!!! she DOES open her eyes wide and then squints! :D

and i agree she's extremely beautiful

  • @pcockpro flawless...and she took herself out....so sad...:(

  • Theres absolutely three phases of emotions we must all have. Correlating with the three fold tabernacle pattern shown first to Moses stop Mount Sinai.

all things go according to this pattern. Like morning noon & evening 3 / past present future 3 / root stem blossom 3 / yesterday today tomorrow 3 / the physical body is : head chest abdomen 3 / the atom proton nuetron electron 3 / Phyllis appeared emotionally to have no rest . having just high & low is exsillerating Father- Son- Holy Spirit

  • lol

  • beautiful...and she is speaking the truth

  • For one magical month, while she was headlining at the Bluenote in Tokyo, this radiant angel found her way to puny little afterhours piano bar gig in Roppongi. She would sit at the piano with me and sing all night long. Then we'd go eat indian food. In the hours i spent with her, I never saw any traces of bi-polar tendancies or any other illness...just like Donny I am sure she did not commit suicide. She was far too gifted and self-aware.

  • I agree very much

  • my gosh! she is sooooooooo pretty.

  • Yes..she really was. Almost like an angel.Sighs...damn. Just hate that she's dead

  • So Much in Love...by The Tymes/Times

  • Those eyes!!!

  • She speaks so well and she's sooo beautiful R.I.P.

  • I never appreciated Phyllis Hyman growing up in the 70's/80's. I knew she could sing and loved "You Know How To Love Me", but her pitch was so low. Back then everybody loved the high note singers like Aretha, Chaka, Whitney. The Contalto's never made it until Anita Baker came on the scene.

Anyway, her story was very sad. She was bipolar, self-medicating, and had no one she trusted enough to listen to. I know that feeling myself. She seemed to have it all, but could not keep it.

  • so beautiful. i was very young when she passed.

  • I agree with what she is saying . you cant trust no one.

  • She was GORGEOUS.

  • She was truly a very talented singer. I feel she was very very very underestimated and underrated.

  • she was such a beautiful woman!

  • WOW Phyllis was a beautiful and talented woman. It is very sad wat happened to her, being depressed all those years, having low self esteem about herself being burned by record companies and things. She is missed forever by fans including me. I think they should've done a movie about her. If they do, I think Faith Evans should play her.Faith is light skinned and beautful like phyllis, and she's beautiful like her. Faith would do very well. R.I.P. PHYLLIS

  • You think Faith looks that much like Phyllis, despite the fact they are both light skinned ? Because we all already agree that Faith resembles Florece Ballard of The Supremes and that she should play her. You know Florence and Phyllis have a lot in common though, because they both went through depression and real deep downfalls but Florence got herself back together before she died of heart attack in 1976. You might have a point. I think they should do some movies on all the Unsung artists.

  • @bigja2008 hella no..faith is trash, phyllis was class

  • @apolloniasixer How is Faith trash ? I mean I have a lot of love for Phyllis but why Faith is no good ?

  • Emotional health is directly tied to physical and spiritual health. If we do not address the stressors in our lives with honesty and proper support for recovery, we live a life of slow and painful death...emotionally, financially, professionally, socially and spiritually.

    Rise In Peace Phyllis...One Love {@}

  • she was so beautiful and talented and poised.

  • I think that people deny their need to handle their emotional problems when they are presented an opportunity for fame and financial success. NOTHING is worth compromising the health of your soul. If riches are meant for you, they will come - I think that the quest for fame is enough tro drive people insane - esp. in our 24/7 Media culture. Not worth it.
