Dug-Out Doug was no hero; he was a sycophant and cold glory-hound. The words he had for the commanders he left behind in the Philipines are unforgivable. He more or less called them cowards for not forcing their men to fight to the death against the Japanese.
BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY BONUS ARMY
hey does anybody remember what MacArthur did to the WW1 veterans that were trying to collect what was rightfully theirs... what were they called again o yeah the BONUS ARMY... fuck you macarthur rot in hell for fucking my grampa up in korea, rot in hell for being a bitch and never holding a gun yourself and let everyone else do the fighting while you call the fucking shots... just another fucking war monger..
@Seraphimofextasy no he fucking wasn't its because of his retardedness in fucking korea my grampa who was in the recon marines had to get fucked up, all because he had to drive into North korea and keep going.... we could have stopped in south korea we got the objective done (contain communism) but no we kept going to north korea.. and what did dumbass war hmonger MacArthur say THE CHINESE WILL NOT ENTER THE WAR. two weeks later what happens?? they enter the war and kick the shit out of us.
Truman was the President. His legal orders are all that matters. Civilian control over our military defines our greatness as a nation and our military's greatness as a force for good.
@Seraphimofextasy So you're saying is that the US should have nuked China and started a war with them? How ignorant are you. The second the US attacked China, they would have been distracted by the massive military force, and that would have given the Soviet Union the perfect chance to attack the US from the other side. You're crazy if you think the US could handle both superpowers at the same time.
@Sasquatcher777 Inspiring comment. Why don't you grace us with more of your superior intellect as to how you came to your ever so wise comment? Adults are talking here, so why don't you find somewhere else to write your crap or you can "shut the F up".
@trakomako Gen MacArthur recieved his 5th star while in action in the Phillipines. He died in 1964, right during the escalation in Vietnam. Too bad, he understood the orient better than anyone else in the U.S. military that's for sure.
Only 1% of our nation serves in the military, the least out of any G8 nation, and our people take everything for granted...with sloth and disdain. I'm proud of my service, as well as my entire family, back to the Revolution...and back to Ireland.
I have to memorize the first 4:53 of this video and what he said before that for my 2 min. speech this upcoming Wednesday. My prof. is the leader of the forensics team at my university which wins 1st place nationally. I am not a professional speaker but I am proud to be a student in his class. I am actually learning how to become a better public speaker. I am a bit nervous about memorizing this speech, but I'm hoping and praying that things will go well!
@killingkarma I didn't have time to memorize it but I tried hard enough. I ended up passing, but it was on my list of one of the worst speeches I've ever done lol.. All my other speeches went a whole lot smoother.. I ended up getting an A in that class because of how hard I worked.
American sldiers have become so cowardish that they can not do peace keeping missions anymore: RWANDA, CONGO, SOMALIA. Once one of them gets shot they all run away. In every where they fight, they allmost commit genocide because they are too cowardish to go closer to the enemy, they prefer to shoot from a place they can not be reached.
General of the Army MacArthur wouldn't be acceptable in this era. He is a warrior and has no place for sissy's, political hacks and arrogant presidents. Yes he was egomaniac but a brilliant leader. Too bad there are only a few in today's Army that can pass the muster that he and his kind posses. Sgt. (Ret.) USA
Understand that although many Marines are jerks who can be disrespectful to soldiers when the going does get tough the Marines and the soldiers work well with each other. Marines historically are better fighters as well. As far as Spec Ops goes the SEALS are typically the "best". Regardless, the Green Berets and the MARSOC marines also get the job done.
He was the most controversial man of the century, one either hated him R loved him.
his biggest Mistake was trying to ignore his "commander in chief " a Missouri farm boy who was a captain in the missouri national guard in ww1. Harry Truman.
he also had two japanese generals executed for fighting against him in the Philippines , presidents despised him, the enemy feared him, and his men loved him.
@TheAlliswell Truman ignored MacArthur, not the other way around. Truman's orders were for the most part confusing and contradictory. Truman made arm chair decisions based on faulty uneducated info without any regard to his commander in the field. Truman chose to continue to listen to someone who had said not 2 months before the war that South Korea could hold. Truman was also a hothead that let it get the best of him very frequently to the detriment of himself and his country.
@TheBusRand The 2 Japanese generals you're reffering to were executed for ordering the commission of war crimes and attrocities against the Philipino people.
McArthur was fearless. He wanted to take the war right into China and try & conquer them..Would not of been easy, and so many lives would have been lost, and more nukes would have been used...but i really think, mcarthur was willing to go those measures to achieve victory. I also think that victory over China would have been next to impossible..but the only man who could have maybe seen it happen, was McArthur. however the rest of America wasn't willing to go that far..probably for the best.
I salute to Gen. Douglas MacArthur for his promise to our countrymen esp. my province Leyte, Philippines I shall return . And he did it. Thank you America.
@Eirthbndr3 u think?? i am not moved by such long winded speeches..i actually get bored and stop listening. to me, a good speech would grab a hold of ur emotions perfectly and define them perfectly and raise them up into a frenzy of inspiration.. the only speeches that can do that are short and sweet, and to the point. to capture all of the necessary points and emotions in as few words as possible is true skill, and the ingredience for truly great speeches. this one isn't that good man..
This speech was done just a couple of years before his death...his last speech at West Point in his old age. Very moving (he passed away in 1964). I've seen erroneous comments that he was in Vietnam (long retired), an Admiral (he was a 5-Star General). Interestingly...a 5-Star General (Omar Bradley was the last living 5 Star, died in 1979 or 80) is never really fully "retired" and retains a staff and aides, somewhat like a Former President. There's quite a leap from 4 to 5 Stars!
The Generals of today can not be compared to men like Patton, Bradley, MacArthur and Abrams because the executive branch micromanages them to an absurd degree ( and we must all know that politicians have neither the time the training or inclination for strategic thought. (Gen Jack Ripper)) The end result is that a breed of boot licking general officers have been spawned and these are far more skilled in the art of institutional survival than the art of war.
never in my term as a General did I have the simple yet meaningful privalage of meeting Gen Jack Ripper : he has however , defined in terms which are real:abrupt :decisive ...unwavering responses to foolish unclarity that he is worthy of this great nation and of your faith does not concern me my true trust lies in Gen Jack Ripper !
@DerekWenn. President Franklin D Roosevelt, General Douglas MacArthur and Prime Minister Winston Spencer-Churchill shared common great great grandparents. Their three great grandmothers being sisters.
@trakomako no he was the american leading general in the pacific in world war 2and i think your thinking he was bigger than eisenhower(the allied comander in europe) truman was only a soldier in ww1
@trakomako If you still do not know, a General can have as much as 5 stars, but that is only reserved for wartime. I'm not sure if he ever was given the fifth but during WW2 he probably did have it. Generals (010) control pretty much the whole branch of military, 09 Gens control all, but 010s, 08s control all, but 09s and 010s...... see where I'm going with this?
One of the most inspiring speech's I have heard. The Army taught me a'lot as a cadet in college. God Bless you Gen. MacArthur. Rest In Peace. Thank you for your service to our country.
Douglas MacArthur is one of the greatest Men in American History and arguably the greatest general of the 20th Century. Viceroy of Japan MacArthur helped create Modern Japan. A great error was Truman's firing this great Soldier.
Had MacArthur crossed the Yalu likely there would have been no Vietnam War.
I recommend all to read American Caesar a brilliant book detailing the life and times of MacArthur.
@ToughXArmy69 I whole heartedly agree. Not only crossing the Yalu but if Chang Kai Sheik had been alowed to attack from Formosa. Vietnam would've been a very different affair, that's for sure. It's very possible Communism would've died on the vine in Asia. American Caesar is a great book although I don't like the connitation. MacArthur was anything but a "Caesar" and Julius Caesar was anything but a MacArthur.
I did my senior research paper in college on General MacArthur, he is one of the greatest general that America ever had! And this speech is only a tiny glimpse in to how great he was!
@unclelou13 advance/casualty factors might have been different if Patton had been involved from the beginning of the European invasion. The deception created around him in England was very effective. This kind of analysis could go on forever. I personally would pick MacArthur but they are so very close.
@unclelou13 An extremely hard question to answer. They were certainly equally as brave and very similar in their tactical thinking. I believe Patton was a very close second to MacArthur as far as ground taken vs. casualties incurred. MacArthur had a slightly better grasp of the political statesmanship required. Patton's enemies were more effective earlier in his career than MacArthur.
Many in the Truman Adminstration were openly in support of Communism. They refered to Red China as only being "agrarian reformers" throughout their fight with the Nationalists and continued to insist this was so even after the Chinese attack in Korea. This was the primary reason for the "police action" nonsense and the resulting debacle in Korea.
The 2nd would be the communist contingency, who were documented at intially infiltrating and then successfully propogandizing the "Bonus March" in D.C. Revisionist history is the norm to this day on this among many other subjects refering to MacArthur.
These people got their chance to prove themselves when MacArthur was relieved. The result was that 3/5ths of all casualties in Korea occured "after" MacArthur's dismissal, even though "all" major military action occured during MacArthur's command. Matthew Ridgeway continued to try to fight the war as it should've have been, but he was over-ruled, just as MacAthur had been.
Who are these "sources" from which the detractions of MacArthur come from? Generally there are 2, one would be the overly ambitious political and military mediocrity advanced and promoted far beyond their capabilities, of whom MacArthur was a threat. Continued.....
The facts are that McArthur re-claimed more ground and with far less casualties than any other commander of the war, let alone the Pacific. All of this was done while facing a numerically superior enemy in both WWII and Korea. These are indesputable facts.
Yes, there are many examples of the superb work done by the Navy and Marines. But the Marines lost more men on some of those landings than MacArthur lost in an entire campaign.
MacArthur made more progress in less time and with fewer casualties than any allied commander of the war, let alone the Pacific. This was accomplished while facing a numerically superior enemy both in WWII and Korea. The Marines lost more men on one landing then he lost in an entire campaign. These are indesputable facts.
However, the revisionist historical propoganda you speak of has never had any historical basis or fact whatsoever.
@TheBusRand Was Douglas MacArthur in charge of the Marines at the PACIFIC THEATHER or was it another General ??????? In other words who was in charge of the Pacific Theater ??????
@Unclelou13 There was actually 2 theatres of operation, not 1. MacAthur advised against this, even if it meant he was not in charge. Admiral King insisted otherwise, costing for more lives and length than was necessary. MacArthur had no command decisions whatsoever over the central Pacific, that was Admiral Nimitz's responsibility. He had some Marines under his comand, but the vast majority fought under Nimitz, who was following orders via King.
@Unclelou13 It is refreshing to have someone who will ask questions and think for themselves rather than just spout off excrement that has no basis in fact in order to look smart and informative.
@Unclelou13 This propogandist crap isn't confined to the Pacific. The same revisionist history is prevalent in the European Theatre as well. If you've studied good sources of info on Patton, you've discovered in shock (as I did) how much of the movie "Patton" was utterly false or grossly exaggerated. Most of this came from Omar Bradley who openly hated Patton personally, but was inferior to him to an incredible degree as well.
@Unclelou13 Nimitz was overall commander of the Marines in the pacific, Mac author was in charge of the Army, but was supreme allied commander in the pacific, the Marines hated him, and he had no love for them, he was an army man all the way. get U facts right, I have spoken.
@TheAlliswell GOOD FOR YOU !!!! so what you want a MEDAL OF HONOR for your knowledge ????? I don't give a fuck about the USMC, they have always talk trash about the ARMY , history speaks for itself , the Army has better leadership , better schools , the BEST SPECIAL OPS , and the list goes on and on ,,,,
@TheAlliswell what i don't like about MacArthur is this quote that he said about the USMC during the Korean War ... ""I have just returned from visiting the MARINES at the front, and there is not a finer fighting organization in the world """
My grandfather was in the USMC during WW2 , he was part of the 1st Marine Division and he meet John Basilone and he survive the War and he is 92 years old and he never spoke negative things about the Army , but todays Marines do .....
Just so you all understand I do not have any ill will against America or its people. We are friends so as friends some times do we disagree on some issues thats life.
I have researched this issue a lot and from lots of sources. The facts bare out what I have said and you may believe what you will. Do your own research and not just from propaganda, find information outside your country. I sencerly belive he deserves very little of the adulation he has recieved. He is however an enigma, no doubt
GlenRocks I will take that on board and I will continue to do more research, So far I have to say it just keeps reinforcing my view on this man. However I shall dig further.
@acoyrazorback Your facts, sources, research, whatever, come from the detractors, none of which can be supported by real evidence of any kind. A simple fact check on who covered more ground with the least casualties (in both theatres, not just the Pacific) would've told you how rediculous your statements about his lack of his abillity as a general really was.
Hi Chico and Acoy, not a westpointer, myself, but LSU grad and served 25 years in the US Army as an officer. MacArthur, although a West Pointer, he is truly an American Hero. I know this, not by what I know we Americans believe, but what the people of the Phillipines believe about him and hold reverant. He would not let the Navy bypass the Phillipines, we lost more lives for the Philipines, but ultimately showed the world, we did not forget our stubborn, peaceful, resilient friends!
Giannivee1. You have a high level of commitment to your country & your people much respect. I have had 18yrs sevice in my defence forces as well. In wwI Mac Aurthur proved his bravery, that I do not dipute. It is his generalship that was & remains highly suspect to say the least. he was the commander of the forces that liberated the Phillipines of cause they revere him & he also had a genuine love of the Phillipines & it's people. US needed a hero at the beginnig of the war so ego man was it.
history taught me . truman as you might know was vice pres, during ww2 and only became pres when rossevelt died , a few months before the end of ww2 . Macarthur accepted the surrender of japan on the deck of the missouri , in tokio bay . truman firing Macarthur was very contraversal and senate held hearing to see if he was fired with just cause , he still received a heroes welcome when he returned from korea . i would like to ask you now , what make macarthur a blind cunt in you eyes??
truman fired macarthur during the korean war , thats what i was refering to , thats why i said they should have bombed the chinese, like macarthur wanted to do . truman did not agree macarthur wasnt happy he said somethings that got him fired . so in your comment u refered to truman firing macarthur which didnt happen in ww2 so i think i know what i was talking about .and its Macarthur not macaurthur
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Mcaurthurs a blind cunt, and you can bet the day he died half the world poped a bottle of red to celebrate.
PS. heres a speech Harry Truman said the day he releaved his post, "I fired him because he wouldn't respect the aurtoritie of the president. I didn't fire him because he was a dumb son-of a-bitch, although he was, but thats not against the law for generals. If it was, half to three-quarters of them would be in jail".
Well said bjl34565 he was a shit general selfserving, and didn't give a toss for his soldiers, what a prick. Self promoting with little imagination oh he was good at using other peoples battle plans. Hardly any idears of his own. To my American friends get the stars and stripes out of your eyes, you had much better generals than this egotistical wanker. Sophists my arse have an unbias look at this toad, the prick had no idea what conditions his men were fighting in most of the time. Big hero
you are ignorant to dismiss Macarthur as a blind cunt , he is one of the biggest reasons we live in a free world now , as for truman , Macarthur , was right and they should have bombed china . and fought back those zipper heads , any one who thinks macarthur was anything but the greatest general in american history is , wrong history shows that
Peachy it is my deepest regrets to tell you that i shal' no longer be arguing with such a blind fool as you, on the basis of that i only get involved in an arguemen about WWII with some one who actualy knows who it was fought against.
@bjl34565 You are obviously very arrogant and think very highly of yourself, very much like MacArthur's detractors who didn't amount to a pimple on his arse and had to make up all of what you have absorbed without any objectivity on your part whatsoever. Peachy was speaking of Korea, not WWII. Of course you're too busy being pompous to have noticed. Anyone who can say he was a sh@t general hasn't even begun to do their homework.
@ThePeachey81 "any one who thinks macarthur was anything is , wrong history shows that". History also shows that he was an egotistical guy who got lucky with strong political support and had very good Generals under him. "but the greatest general in american history". Seriously, to be honest, I think that title belongs to a USMC General, Smedley D Butler. Because he had a greater ethical attitude towards life about the political world, and the business world.
Hey bji I have read heaps of stuff including ragged bloody hero's. Before I did broader reading I thought Mac Aurthur was ok. The truth is not very pretty and if you have been feed the propaganda this people have had for 60 years it would be a bitter pill to swallow. Get hold of some books about the lead up to the Korean war thats an eye opener to this joker to. I wish they had sent some other general to Australia in WWII not this loser.
Well, i won't say douglas was the best general of all time..and i agree with some idiotic plans that he made but one thing for sure, he fought pretty well in korea and i know that because im korean studying history
General Macarthur was an ego general who was in fact a 33rd degree freemason of the scottish rite. I don't consider him a good general. He may have made some smart decisions, but he almost got quite a few of his own divisions killed off. In my opinion to like him is like liking obama for his good speeches, whom also does things by ego. Most of macarthurs men didn't like him either.
creativersd he did have fleeting moments of brilliance that does not a general make. The political situation in Korea was miss read before the start of hostilities. Then China kept sending messages to the UN and USA to back off and not cross the Yalu river. Mac wanted to fight the Chinese because he had an emotional connection to nationalist china. If he had of stoped and consolidated then rebuilt Korea. The situation would be very different today. Did they teach you that?

You HAVE NO FUCKING IDEA about the most arrogant, insufitiant and all out fool that was Douglas McfuckingArthur. He comanded all pacific forces from the furthest place from the pacific. While his American soliders were starving and fighting for there lives he, secretly took the last plane in Raubal and flew to australia then mounths after he told his second in command "Ether you take New Guine or die trying".
You have got to be joking tonylee unless you mean at self promotion. In the New Guinea campain he had no real idea of the ground which his forces(Australian90%) were fighting in and thought that the Australians out numbered the enemy which was wrong. On the Kokoda Track the Australians were out numbered 10:1 this prick had NO Idea. They made a fighting withdrawl and then counter attacked and drove the Japs back to where they landed. This was at great cost due to this frigwit. Read unbias books.
The beauty of it is....great men only become great through many failures...so that those who risk nothing and accomplish nothing can voice their opinions.....a right they owe to great failures like MacArthur.....
@nap106 Bullshit, great men ARE great because they do or inspire greatness. Yes he failed greatly and regularly. Surrounded himself with sycohantic parisites who massaged his ego and promoted the the lie of his greatness. There is a 26 part doco on Korean war here on youtube watch that. Read Peter Fitzsimons"KOKODA" ISBN 0 7336 19622 How do you know that those who comment have accomplished or risked nothing? I will share more books to read soon. He was a Blugger! Australian vernacular look it up
My main point was and is...let those who have done zip speak their peace...it is their right ,thanks to all who served in all wars (3 for MacArthur) I understand your point ...not your hatred....Have a good one and hat's off to all Aussies...great people....
@nap106 I take your point, hate is a strong word I don't hate any individual. It is the attitude and self aggrandizment that annoys me. You have a good one too. The American people are fine humanbeings and have endured a lot. We will always be friends, and as all good friends do they tell us when we stray or do stupid things. That works both ways of course. peace.
You must be extremely accomplished - Nobel peace prize? hehehe - LIsten save your breathe - I see you have a lot of post on here obviously you have better things to do with your busy life. I'm a West Pointer and General MacArthur had an astonishing career starting at West Point - he later was the Commandant, Superintendent and his final speech -Duty, Honor, Country at his Thayer award ceremony is timeless - that you think you can stand near close or around even his shit house is beyond me.
haha - you know I was mocking the Nobel peace prize - now if you are speaking of twits it would be our CURRENT Commander in Chief (or is that blame.) Hey I understand if you have some disagreements with MacArthur but he is one of my heros - we all make mistakes and the bigger the stakes the bigger the mistakes rights? Look at Obama he spoke ill of Bush but seems quite fine with most of his policies aside from talking ill of them. Its different when you have to make the decision. Perspective.
@ChicoCDM Yep Nobel PEace prize, indeed it is a joke, you are correct. No worries I have placed individuals on a pedestal before today as well. I guess we get more of the facts about him without the hype. So it is difficult to see why he is such a great hero in your country from our perspective, other than he had a great PR machine working for him. On politics, my friend you need to understand that to these people it is a game and they are in on the joke and we suffer the consequences.
A poll conducted this week showed that 44% want Bush back and 45% support Obama. He has the lowest rating of any president at this point in their careers. He sucks. I knew better than to fall for hope and change. we'll see what happens but Americans as a whole are concerned. Even the ones that voted for him have shut up - and are silent well the ones I know anyways. HE SUCKS!! What a louse!
@trismith It was the US navy that did the hard yards in the Pacific war not Mac Nugget. If it was not for them the Japanese would have held on in the Pacific. So we are greatful to the USA just not mac Nugget. He was a poor general read the book "Kakoda" by Peter Fitzsimmons that will help you understand why. By the way we like the British generals who were in charge of Malay and Singapore even less read that history. My country had maybe 6 00000 people and no industrial base at that time.
@trismith Australia was an agrarian economy with light industry and had to develop heavy industry durringthe war which it did. Also Australia was the only country to pay it's own way durring the war and paid for all the leand lease equipment and even had credits owing from the US. This is just some back ground info. It was Aust ground troops who first stoped the Japs in WWII. So for a small country poulation wise we achieved a lot. Title of the book is Kokoda not Kakoda Hope this helps explain.
The Austrailian troops fought exceptionaly in ww2. Austrailia is and always will be an allie of America. I think we all need to take into consideration the responsibility that was laid upon MacAthur. He was bound to make mistakes and piss a lot of people off. He also was a big part of the allie's success. That cant be argued.
Hperman thanks for that insightful comment. At no stage have I made things up everything I have said about the Australian effort is provable. I have never said Australia did all the work in the pacific. In New Guinea However they did do the lions share. Thanks to the superb US navy and marines who bore the brunt of the fighting in the pacific the japs were defeated. I stand by the facts as I know them to be Mc Nugget was a crap general in wwII. The communique king. Aust gen Blamey also a waster.
My great uncle's "Ivy division" served with MacArthur's 42nd "Rainbow division" in France during July and August of 1918 when they turned the tide of WW1. My great Uncle died of wounds there on August 8th aged 22. It's unfortunate so many politicans today believe that by doing nothing good things will happen in countries controlled by lawless bullies.
Did you know the US forces first went into battle in WW1 within the Australian divisions? who had been there for years I might add. The Australians were the only all volunteer army in WW1. The statistics of their achievements are an eye opener. That is not lessening other contributions but for a country of 4 million people at that time it was a huge commitment.
The ANZAC alliance was critical for success in WWII. Our countries should not be picking a fight now, but honoring their memories. All three countries fielded men of incredible bravery and sacrifice.
This is one of the best American speeches ever given and we should be grateful there is a recording.
With bad ammo and obsolete weapons, the Philippines were never defendable. The point was to have enough to hold out so the Pacific fleet could come and save them.
As to his military career, he was a survivor.
FDR ordered him out, Congress awarded him the Medal of Honor, and the phrase "I shall return!" will live on forever.
God save the Philippines and the United States of America!
mac was only great at promoting himself, with few moments of brilliance. Those who love mac need to do some more research. As an Australian I thank the USA for your help in WWII. We only had a population of 6 mil people.. Most of our fighters were in nth Africa & Europe at the time. You all need to open up to all aspects of this man good and bad. over all I give him 3 out of 10.
It is true that his achievements were inflated by his news management skills but you cannot deny his achievements. As the facts are laid out, it is true that he liberated the Philippines from Japan, that he helped rebuild post-war Japan and that he successfully commanded the troops of the pacific theater even thought the government gave him less than sufficient men and equipments to fight the Japanese, who would rather die than surrender.
Of course, controversies clouding his achievement cannot be overlooked. He was, after all, dismissed for insubordination and was questioned as to the logistic reasoning behind his strategies. Still, I think the achievements trumps the vices and that 3 out of 10 is quite harsh, I would at least give him a 6 or 7 out of 10.
his insubrordiation was pure garbage. it was well known that truman disliked macarthur, becuase of his other generals posioning his mind. when macarthur refused to do what the cheif of staff told him to do, truman finaly got his cahnce to fire him
dgambino30, yep I did say we could not have done it without the US. we only had a population of 6 000000. Another fact is that the first time the japs were defeated on land was by Australian forces dito germans at Tobuk North Africa. Fact. Cheers friend.
No he didnt lead, he was commander of southwest pacific area there is a difference. It was the commanders on the ground who made up for his lack of generalship. He had no idea of the conditions and terrain his forces were fighting in.. I was not being sarcastic when I said cheers friend. The past can't be changed. He built his own legend on the sacrifice of to many great fighting men US and others he was a Prick. Your country was not at war durring the siege of Tobruk.
my country was fighting before we officialy entered the war. okay, he built up his military career an the deaths of the men below him, and may i remind you his outstanding survival rates even hough the u.s gov gave him next to nothing. he was a great general, ranked among the top 10 best generals in u.s history. you should be kissing his stars, cuz it was him who put of a fight in austrilia, not amerca
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Be stuffed if I will ever kiss that pricks stars. Yes The USA was involved in WWII before the japs bombed Pearl harbour thank you. Did you think the axis powers were going to stop in Europe and Asia? hee hee. By the way the Australian General Blamey who was in charge of our forces was a prick too, Old bastard was lucky Australian troops were so disciplined or he would have been shoot for what he said to the men who first stoped the JAPs in PNG. Unfortunately US army did very poorly in PNG,

how am i out of my mind because i know that he sucked?as a us marine myself im sorry i wouldnt want to be left alone on an island because be superior has furniture on his fucking plane
Try reading James Dunnigan on that one. MacArthur took his wife, young son, and his son's nurse with him when he left Corrigador. The furniture story is a total legend. Truman had plenty of reason to relieve him in '51.
I used to be a general then I got cocky and didn't follow orders.

I have spoken.
TheAlliswell 1 year ago
@TheAlliswell Truman ignored MacArthur, not the other way around. Truman's orders were for the most part confusing and contradictory. Truman made arm chair decisions based on faulty uneducated info without any regard to his commander in the field. Truman chose to continue to listen to someone who had said not 2 months before the war that South Korea could hold. Truman was also a hothead that let it get the best of him very frequently to the detriment of himself and his country.

ToughXArmy69 1 year ago
@ToughXArmy69 I whole heartedly agree. Not only crossing the Yalu but if Chang Kai Sheik had been alowed to attack from Formosa. Vietnam would've been a very different affair, that's for sure. @unclelou13 advance/casualty factors might have been different if Patton had been involved from the beginning of the European invasion. The deception created around him in England was very effective. This kind of analysis could go on forever. I personally would pick MacArthur but they are so very close.
TheBusRand 1 year ago
@unclelou13 An extremely hard question to answer. They were certainly equally as brave and very similar in their tactical thinking. I believe Patton was a very close second to MacArthur as far as ground taken vs. casualties incurred. MacArthur had a slightly better grasp of the political statesmanship required. Patton's enemies were more effective earlier in his career than MacArthur.
TheBusRand 1 year ago
Many in the Truman Adminstration were openly in support of Communism. They refered to Red China as only being "agrarian reformers" throughout their fight with the Nationalists and continued to insist this was so even after the Chinese attack in Korea. This was the primary reason for the "police action" nonsense and the resulting debacle in Korea.

The 2nd would be the communist contingency, who were documented at intially infiltrating and then successfully propogandizing the "Bonus March" in D.C. Revisionist history is the norm to this day on this among many other subjects refering to MacArthur.
TheBusRand 1 year ago
These people got their chance to prove themselves when MacArthur was relieved. The result was that 3/5ths of all casualties in Korea occured "after" MacArthur's dismissal, even though "all" major military action occured during MacArthur's command. Matthew Ridgeway continued to try to fight the war as it should've have been, but he was over-ruled, just as MacAthur had been.

TheBusRand 1 year ago
@TheBusRand Was Douglas MacArthur in charge of the Marines at the PACIFIC THEATHER or was it another General ??????? In other words who was in charge of the Pacific Theater ??????
Unclelou13 1 year ago
@Unclelou13 There was actually 2 theatres of operation, not 1. MacAthur advised against this, even if it meant he was not in charge. Admiral King insisted otherwise, costing for more lives and length than was necessary. MacArthur had no command decisions whatsoever over the central Pacific, that was Admiral Nimitz's responsibility. He had some Marines under his comand, but the vast majority fought under Nimitz, who was following orders via King.

TheBusRand 1 year ago
@Unclelou13 This propogandist crap isn't confined to the Pacific. The same revisionist history is prevalent in the European Theatre as well. If you've studied good sources of info on Patton, you've discovered in shock (as I did) how much of the movie "Patton" was utterly false or grossly exaggerated. Most of this came from Omar Bradley who openly hated Patton personally, but was inferior to him to an incredible degree as well.
TheBusRand 1 year ago
@Unclelou13 Nimitz was overall commander of the Marines in the pacific, Mac author was in charge of the Army, but was supreme allied commander in the pacific, the Marines hated him, and he had no love for them, he was an army man all the way. get U facts right, I have spoken.

Why do Australians hate General Mac? Arn't the Aussies happy that the country they live in isn't flying the Japanese flag?
trismithaussies 2 years ago 9
@trismith It was the US navy that did the hard yards in the Pacific war not Mac Nugget. If it was not for them the Japanese would have held on in the Pacific. So we are greatful to the USA just not mac Nugget. He was a poor general read the book "Kakoda" by Peter Fitzsimmons that will help you understand why. By the way we like the British generals who were in charge of Malay and Singapore even less read that history. My country had maybe 6 00000 people and no industrial base at that time.
acoyrazorback 2 years ago

That cant be argued.

acoyrazorback is a Australian troll. ignore that aussie prick. he tend to make thing up like Australia did all the work and stuff.
Hperman09 2 years ago
Hperman thanks for that insightful comment. At no stage have I made things up everything I have said about the Australian effort is provable. I have never said Australia did all the work in the pacific. In New Guinea However they did do the lions share. Thanks to the superb US navy and marines who bore the brunt of the fighting in the pacific the japs were defeated. I stand by the facts as I know them to be Mc Nugget was a crap general in wwII. The communique king. Aust gen Blamey also a waster.

@TheBusRand And who do you think is or was better as a General or who was the best between General George S. Patton and General MacArthur ?????
Unclelou13 1 year ago
My great uncle's "Ivy division" served with MacArthur's 42nd "Rainbow division" in France during July and August of 1918 when they turned the tide of WW1. My great Uncle died of wounds there on August 8th aged 22. It's unfortunate so many politicans today believe that by doing nothing good things will happen in countries controlled by lawless bullies.

Yes sir. Excuse me but where are they are who are they. Thank you.
Nationsnotregimes 2 years ago

You all need to open up to all aspects of this man good and bad. over all I give him 3 out of 10.
acoyrazorback 2 years ago
It is true that his achievements were inflated by his news management skills but you cannot deny his achievements. As the facts are laid out, it is true that he liberated the Philippines from Japan, that he helped rebuild post-war Japan and that he successfully commanded the troops of the pacific theater even thought the government gave him less than sufficient men and equipments to fight the Japanese, who would rather die than surrender.
oraclewind524 2 years ago
Of course, controversies clouding his achievement cannot be overlooked. He was, after all, dismissed for insubordination and was questioned as to the logistic reasoning behind his strategies. Still, I think the achievements trumps the vices and that 3 out of 10 is quite harsh, I would at least give him a 6 or 7 out of 10.
oraclewind524 2 years ago
his insubrordiation was pure garbage. it was well known that truman disliked macarthur, becuase of his other generals posioning his mind. when macarthur refused to do what the cheif of staff told him to do, truman finaly got his cahnce to fire him
starcraft2222 2 years ago
Help? What are you talking about. The U.S. did a little more than help. Australia would have been crushed. You need to be more realistic.
dgambino30 2 years ago
dgambino30, yep I did say we could not have done it without the US. we only had a population of 6 000000. Another fact is that the first time the japs were defeated on land was by Australian forces dito germans at Tobuk North Africa. Fact. Cheers friend.
acoyrazorback 2 years ago
leaded by general macrthur. fact friend.
starcraft2222 2 years ago
No he didnt lead, he was commander of southwest pacific area there is a difference. It was the commanders on the ground who made up for his lack of generalship. He had no idea of the conditions and terrain his forces were fighting in.. I was not being sarcastic when I said cheers friend. The past can't be changed. He built his own legend on the sacrifice of to many great fighting men US and others he was a Prick. Your country was not at war durring the siege of Tobruk.
acoyrazorback 2 years ago
my country was fighting before we officialy entered the war. okay, he built up his military career an the deaths of the men below him, and may i remind you his outstanding survival rates even hough the u.s gov gave him next to nothing. he was a great general, ranked among the top 10 best generals in u.s history. you should be kissing his stars, cuz it was him who put of a fight in austrilia, not amerca

Unfortunately US army did very poorly in PNG,

clusterns 2 years ago
Try reading James Dunnigan on that one. MacArthur took his wife, young son, and his son's nurse with him when he left Corrigador. The furniture story is a total legend. Truman had plenty of reason to relieve him in '51.
