R.I,P RONNIE AND LUKE, MUST RANK AMONG SOME OF OUR LANDS WORST DISASTERS THE DAY GOD TOOK EM AWAY, sure you was the greatest and i speak for Ireland when i write these words sure that we were blessed and now they have gone we mourn your loss and rejoice that god was good to us and gave us the greatest irish band yous could ever listen too.
Ciaran showed a similar emotion when he played a beautiful slow air about one of his ancestors on stage in Eindhoven, 1971. I spent an enjoyable afternoon with him in O'Donoghues in 1979 and asked him the name of the air. In spite of problems caused by his stroke he was obliging and hummed it for me. It was a version of "Lord of Mayo". When I mentioned that a friend had named his son Ciaran after him, he wept and asked for their address. He said of himself, "I was Ciaran Bourke". R.I.P. Ciaran!
I watched this show when it was on live and Ciaran's poem is still one of the most raw emotional things I have ever seen on television. It's arresting and just a gift to the World.
It took me 2 years to watch this video and i still wish i had never watched it it took the life right out of me to see Ciaran like that R.I.P. when i think about Ciaran, Luke, and Ronnie. I like to imagine them standing beside God playing a jig. Cause we all know The Dubliners was one of Gods Gifts to the world.
@irishpoe I feel you, as sad as this is, there is some incredible power to it. When Ciaran delivers the end of the poem, "where cant and hypocrisy can no longer embarrass him", it is just simply amazing. He mustered up enough to make the last point, the most important thing he could say about Brendan Behan, the one with the most punch. It's the part that stays with me when the video is over.
Your right lad there is just so much emotion and pain and happiness all mixed in it just overwhelms the soul, and you left speechless at the end because you know its over for now untill you reach the golden pub in the sky.
R.I.P Ciarán. U have always been my idol even if I never had the opportunity to see U in real life. the lads had a great concert yesterday here in Malmo. I hope U have a good time up there together with Luke and Ronnie and Bob Lynch. Slainte
RIP Ciaran, talented man, played the guitar, tin whistle, harmonica and of course his voice, fluent in Irish too, sad he was stopped so early due to illness.
Between his leaving the group in 1974 and the time of his death, The Dubliners continued to pay Ciarán and they did not take on a full-time fifth member during his lifetime.
Very nice, I don't know much about these artists, but I saw several singers that are very famous. Ronnie Drew is much missed. Good contributions from all.
when the camera spans the room its amazing all the figures of Irish society and culture that are present in the one room, the Dubliners, Christy Moore, U2, CJH,Shane McGowan, The Fureys and Gay Byrne etc.
this one gives me the chills every single time i watch it..
may God bless you guys and luke..truly immortals you guys should be, i'll do my part and raise me kids with Dubliners as i know there are some things in our culture that we shouldnt forget..
His younger brother Ronan and I motored over to his house in Howth, and a had a great dinner.
Ciaran and his wife were the soul of Irish hospitality ! I remember staying overnight and the next day having more sweet blather, with the addition of their Postman, who stayed for Tea. Ronan and I left back to the Family Georgian house in South Dublin, late that second evening. Once in a Lifetime, a Fond Memory Renewed !
Thank you for posting. Unfortunately, the song at the end is cut half way through and Ronnie was in fine voice. Any chance of a re-post with the full song?
Yes I know, that stinks at a very poinient moment too. This clip is from a 'special' edition of a show in Ireland called 'The Late Late Show'.It was to celebate the 25th anniversary of The Dubliners. The entire video of the show is excellent and is available around the web. Luke Kelly's rendition of Phil coulter's 'Scorn Not His Simplicity' is my favorite part of that show along with a Pogus/Dubliners version of 'The Irish Rover'.
I remember this Late Late Show. Great night--- Sitting right beside Ciarán was Mick McCarthy R.I.P. who used to own the Embankment Pub in Tallaght. (The home of ballad sessions in the 60's/70's) Mick was a brother of Seán Mc Carthy who wrote some fine ballads. I have a clip of Peggy Sweeney singing two of his compositions.
I've never seen this till tonight. I can remember Ciaran although was only a kid. Have spent the entire evening watching videos of Ciaran, Luke and Ronnie. God look after you guys. Your songs will always be with me. RIP
Dear 'menbehindthesweaters' - in spite of Ciaran's failing health, what a joy to see him there. A fine musician, singer and Gaelic scholar. Ciaran and Luke were taken from us far too soon. If only..... I now must find this video. Thank you so much for posting this wee part.
Ciaran and Luke may be gone from this world but they will never be forgotten.

@rockst4rFTW No... He had a brain aneurysm. Which when operated on led to further hemorrhaging. This left him paralysed down his left side.

"Sad solemn notes and crates of newly drawn stout,
the usual symptoms when a life goes out.
But the extinction this time being 7 times the most.
The music held no echo and the tears drowned our toast.
Sorrow and bereavement, life has no meaning now, silence is master.
Laughter and song bowed for gone went our great captain to some more hospitable inn
where cant and hypocrisy can no longer embarrass him."
