I've been watching these tutorials a lot and they are really helpful, but I think the military system has changed, no there is scheduling and alarms and it doesn't make any sense. It would be great if you could make a video explaining the new system or something.

Actually, doors don't have to be between two walls. They just have to be next to one wall. If you take advantage of that, you can build double doors into rooms with high traffic.

@Raidonrai I found the "Military Interface" page in the Dwarf Fortress wiki. Google it; it's very helpful. Also the people haunting the official forums are very helpful too. I now know how to make custom uniforms, training dwarves, and making them attack. I get lost in the menu sometimes though so I'm still no expert. :))

Actually, if a dwarf gets possessed he doesn't master his craft. But any other mood will cause this though.

Thats a strange "mood". He will request materials in vague ways and if he gets them, he can make a master craft! And he will also become a master at whatever craft he did to make it.

@UnhappyYak I cant give you a percent but you should generally keep a 1/3 ratio going, so for every three peasents or workers you have a champion.

@pookikat those arent trees, their really shitty looking ASCII arrows, the ones facing upward are arrows indicating a upward slope at that tile, vice versa, The new graphics packs avalible make this game look far better.

Damn i dont know if i was doing something really right or really wrong but my first migrant group put my population up to 20, is it random or is their some formula basis for how many you get

I *think* it has to do with caravans, trading attracts migrants (they think your fort is rich). When I have not traded with caravans, I don't get migrants, or I get very few, where if I give them a lot of profit I get 20+ migrants in one wave.

It seems this game starts off a bit "slow" and works it's way up as you play it. I've been having some problems at my start, and your Tut has helped me a bit. Thanks for the Tut.

You don't have to assign bed for dwarfs if you don't feel like assigning 40 beds if you moved your beds to better place.

The assigning simply happens when a dwarf sleeps in a bed, then it turn to his/hers bed.

There's no need to assign bedrooms to dwarves unless you have a room in mind for a specific dwarf (say, a noble); dwarves will happily claim an empty bedroom as their own without assistance. Just remember to define the bedroom with q, r so it's a proper bedroom and not just a bed (which they'll use too, but won't be pleased about).
