These guitars are better made than the HCtj 17. These were made in Korea...Samick, I'm pretty sure...I have one. They sound best with flatwounds...
The HCT17's are made in China...The H5 was discontinued, because it cost Hofner too much to make...so they found a cheaper company...with cheaper quality, for the HCT17...
how does this compare to the newer hctj17 made in China hofner jazzbox? It kinda sounds better to my ears. I saw your other video on the newer version. What do you think is better, in your opinion?
I think this guitar sounds lovely for this amount of money. One shouldn't compare with the Gibson L5 because the price difference is HUGE. But compared to other jazzers in this price range I think this is a winner!
hI RICH LOVE YOUR VIDS. WOULD YOU CONCIDER EXCEPTING PAYMENTS? WHEN ALL PAYED FOR THEN YOU SHIP? WHAT IS THE FINAL PRICE FOR A HOFNER? THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AN INFO..
sweet ! once had a gretch like that H and boy, I wish I'd kept hold of that little baby, coz oh boy! The sound and the resale value as a classic even though it was beat up an all...well, we live and learn....I got an Ibanez 550 now, it's cool does it an all: anyway back to learning that Bosa
I have one of these...They sound much better with flatwounds...I'm sure Rich is using the roundwounds that came on it 'out of the box' as he said. I wish he'd had the same strings on both guitars...
btw, I hold my picks with my lips.. and sometimes I'm disgusted.. I mean, they were on the floor and god knows where else.. and I realize that when I pick it of the floor and stuff it right in my mouth (when I'm in a middle of the gig)
Thanks Rich. One more thing, can you name me a choice of say three BUDGET priced amps that would sound great with the Verythin and give me a jazz tone to die for! Let's say a bit of a Wes tone.
Any chance of that longer backing track for that bebop soloing and comping in Bb we were talking about a few months ago. About 150bpm with a real drum sound.
As far as jazz goes the H5 has more acoustic qualities. The Verythin has a nice jazz sound but it's more electric sounding. If you play at high volumes in a group go for the Verythin.Lower volumes and strictly jazz get the H5. Hope this helps
Cool review! I have a '59 125 and have don't think I've heard an archtop that sounds as dark and warm as a Gibson. The H5 is definatley a cool guitar for the buck though.
i played a vintage 1943 Hofner guitar that was used in the big bands

thanks for the video, but I do not understand the difference between H5 and Hofner Hofner hctj17. The guitars seem to be identical

Try A Fender re-issue Deluxe, Vibrolux, or Twin depending in the watts you need. Still contemplating the longer track

hofner sounded brighter

In terms of a great warm jazz tone and ease to play, would you go for the Hofner H5 or the Hofner Verythin Contemporary?
