@GoofyMischiefMaker Xie xie you pronounce it as it 'she-ay, she-ay' then there is Toa chie both are of mandarin dialect. One is less formal than the other if i am not mistaken, not sure which one. in taiwan using the Hokkien dialect it would be morel like Kam sia. Cantonese has four ways o saying thank you depending on the context of the thank you but you can use Doh je. Hoi San which is also used in china it would be U de. in Shanghai its shia shia.
@GoofyMischiefMaker note - english translations of chinese kanji is not a exact science and try to spell it phonetically but even that has differences. Wing Chun and Ving Tsun are spelled differently but refer to the same martial art and is pronounced moreor less the same. another one isShaolin Temple. Síulahm Jih note Siulahm is also spelled Sil Lum (cantonese) and Shaolín Sì (mandarin).
Firstly this guys stretching exercises are prehistoric, but I guess thats still what they get taught at the Shaolin temple as it says in the desrciption. Tom Kurzs PNF is the way to do it.
Secondly for a guy posting as a Expert and wearing a Shaolin monks uniform he probably should do the uniform justice and be able to get the splits to the floor.
dudes, I have been learning to do a split since high school. I still doing splits for 8 years. It's painfully in the beginning but you have to stretch all the time. I don't any pain after a few weeks since the first time i did it. It's good for your legs and groins. Make your ballsack hanging down. lol
Good video in some ways but there's a lot more involved than that! if you can't get into that position then you have to build to it very gradually otherwise you could do yourself a serious mischief.
Also this is about strength as well as flexibility, the stronger the muscles involved are the less they resist the extreme stretch and don't lock up.
Good in some ways this as a demonstration, but a word of warning to the uniniated; don't try this without building up to it gradually!
I used to be able to do a split when I was playing hockey as a goalie. I haven't done one in ages. Whats the best way to get back into it? Slowly, or just tear some muscle?
but boxing has it's uniqueness, like it strengthen the power in a very quick way, but in kung-fu in has to take a longer time to reach the same scale of power of a single punch. But battle is not only a thing of power, but also dominated by who hits the weakness of human body more fast and easily...
stretching is very important in all kinds of kung-fu, not only in Shaolin style. If your legs can stretches then you can do a very quick kick or advance kicking. The same our hands or arms should be stretched too so you can fight in a complicated fast moves that no body can predict, that's what made up Chinese kung-fu. Not like boxing only practicing on muscles, powerful, but less unpredictable, if meeting a guy that's as equally powerful and fast but with complicated kung-fu moves, then...
I`m 32 and wanna train for a split and stuff and I know it`s gonna hurt, but is it still possible at this age? Or do I have to sit in a wheelchair for a year when I try this ? :)
the one thing I hate is that expertvillage has very very short tutorials. I find that not very useful in a lot of ways. It only helps for fast learners only...
Ultimately, everything hurts, especially if you box or wrestle. Your muscles aren't used to extreme movement, that doesn't mean they can't learn, only that it will be painful to someone who hasn't stretched or isn't familiar with the certain move. The body is at best adaptable, so with time anything is possible.
@Gaara757 yes you will fuck yourself right up, the chinese idea is that if you do what is hard constantly some day it will be easy, we in the west think do things gradually, it's your choice. The question is do you really need these splits, I mean you wouldn't punch someone in the ankle so why kick to the head outside of sport? You've got to ask yourself if it's worth it.
@Gaara757 - Tearing muscle is basically what stretching is. You have to tear them so that they grow back longer. The key is that you shouldnt tear too much at once, or you will have trouble walking. General Pain is ok.. but a jolting sharp stabbing pain is a bad sign. Also, it must be done slowly. IE: Dont just try to quickly touch the toes. Bend a little further, over an extended time. Too quick will shock the body, & muscles will seize up, not allowing further stretch for a while.
@xiaou2 Stretching covers a wide variety of things including more conservative methods which do not cause tears (static-active and dynamic-active come to mind as things which should not be tearing anything).
@tyciol - Muscles develop in certain ways and places along the bone. More strength = more strands, & more chances they will be connected on the bone in ways that cause inflexibility. To gain flexibility back, those limiting strands must be disconnected (torn). They then grow back at a place further up the bone, & longer. (as far as my understanding goes) A lite stretch isnt going to tear the strands, & any gain will be temporary, as a result.
@xiaou2 Muscles don't connect to bones, the tendons connect them. Ignoring that problem, there is no evidence that you can change the attachment sites of tendons on bones.
I do think you can make muscles longer though, this simply means they will have more slack in neutral position. We do not need to change attachment sites to lengthen muscles.
@Gaara757 - The problem many ppl have, is not doing enough. Ive seen many artist stuck at the same level for years. They stay in the pain area too short a time, & dont push hard enough. The muscles then dont rip enough, and heal back the same length. Especially if the person does stretch often enough. To rebuild ur body, will take a lot of pain & effort.(its Harder for a person w/ stronger/thicker muscles) Flexibility will help w/ health & better precision w/ techniques.
@xiaou2 'rip apart' sounds like an extreme expression, I'm sure some microtears and hypertrophy occur, but the term ripping usually applies to debilitating injuries
This really depends on how fast you want progress. If you break/tear only a small (micro) amount, then it could take +8 yrs to attain a split. The more aggressive you are, the more pain will be felt in the process, and during healing. I agree it sounds harsh.. but the body is capable of taking it... so long as its not too extreme... such as trying to do a split in a single day/week.. etc.
look they are martial artists , doesnt mean they dedicated their life to martial arts they are super good fighters ... fight experience is only gained when fighting ... i am pretty shure i ill fair good againt this guy in a fight ... if not beat him ... fancy moves dont mean you can fight ...

@penguinlover51 For some reason, which I come closer to fathoming over the years, a lot of "old world" instructors teach like this. I have several theories: to test dedication, dilution of oral tradition or emphasis on personal style development.
hefnasty99 - leave your bigotry behind, if you are a martial arts practitioner, obviously not as this is Chinese not Japanese, which you seemed to not understand. It's Shifu or Sifu (defendant on accent).
true, thing is, to have charisma you need to have some sort of conviction, and when your main concern is survival and practical matters, you have very little time for such pretension. Just seeing things from their perspective.
poorer practitioners of martial arts aren't trying to figure out the key to eternity, or understand the deeper philosophical underpinnings of martial arts, they train to be as best prepared as possible to deal with criminal scumbags.
not saying poor people can't be charismatic; look at Mexico's Pancho Villa. The man was dirt poor, and ugly as hell, but by all accounts he was charismatic, that is why he had followers.
traditional kung fu masters are sometimes in higher social position but first you need to know some culture, and your western critisicm wont allow to learn it
mobius000001's a fucktard who's only been able to master saying "welcome back" in all these years. ofcourse, he has to practice saying that everyday lest he forget the only thing he has learnt.

hefnasty99 - leave your bigotry behind, if you are a martial arts practitioner, obviously not as this is Chinese not Japanese, which you seemed to not understand. It's Shifu or Sifu (defendant on accent).

fake shaolin monk

dude, most Shaolin monks in China are dirt poor, and come from families that are dirt poor.
Where you expecting an ultra charismatic, ultra eloquent, incredibly wise guru floating on a lotus cloud or something?

You can be all of those things while still being dirt poor...
DopeSoldier 2 years ago
true, thing is, to have charisma you need to have some sort of conviction, and when your main concern is survival and practical matters, you have very little time for such pretension. Just seeing things from their perspective.

poorer practitioners of martial arts aren't trying to figure out the key to eternity, or understand the deeper philosophical underpinnings of martial arts, they train to be as best prepared as possible to deal with criminal scumbags.
pillsburydoughboy47 2 years ago
not saying poor people can't be charismatic; look at Mexico's Pancho Villa.
