There needs to be a huge memorial in DC next to the Jefferson Memorial on the tidal pool within view of the Lincoln Memorial in white marble. Would love to see it dedicated while Johnny is still alive.
I saw Johnny last week and I have to say I thought I died and went to heaven for an hour and half. The more you listen to him the more you realize what a truly gifted guirtar player he is. He may have health concerns but the love of the blues is a fire deep inside him and I was blessed to see him. If you get a chance to see him you won;t be disappointed. The drummer that is playing with him is second to none.
Miles Davis once said most people need others telling them what's worthwhile or not and why and Johnny Winter gives an example of that, talking about what happened after the Rolling Stone article. Plenty of other examples, to this day, also on YT, of people following the hype and marketing blah blah. Hard to keep away from that.
The R&R hall of fame is (also) in the first place about "who you know" and not "what you're able to".
saw johnny a couple nights ago----DO NOT believe the trashtalkers on here-----i was 5 feet from the stage and johnny played fine, especially his slidework
This is a great post. Johnny is famous for giving terrible interviews; one word or just a few word answers to carefully thought-out questions were the norm. To hear Johnny speak long and thoughtful sentences is marvelous. Children, watch and listen carefully!
Johnny and Edgar are two of the greatest guys to come from Texas. True musical ambassadors for that great state that has a long tradition of producing some of the hottest blues players in the world. Long live Johnny and Edgar Winter and long live Texas! YEAH!
My pal had Still Alive and Well wow res a great album, we kept listening to it the whole darn day, then I bough "John Dawson Winter the third" with an elegant smoking in the album cover but didn't measure up against my friends Still Alive and Well, but still had very good tracks that one (mine)

@longlostgus I sincerely hope you have or heard the "Saints & Sinners album!!!! That's what got me hooked, turned me into a huge JW fan --- back in 1972 and I still am today!

@Bopalena As a friend, I'm certain you feel protective of Johnny; and as a lifelong fan I am as well. That being said, Johnny does not "kick ass" any more. He is a feeble old man who had a major physical breakdown some 10 years ago and has since been unable to play at anywhere near the level that we all loved him for. He showed signs of trouble in 1998 when I saw him play (twice) and again in 1999 (twice). In 2000, he hobbled onstage and shook like he had Parkinson's. He has never recovered...
@beeroosterm - True it ain't what it was, but see him now and you'll be very surprised how much he's improved. His new manager Paul Nelson got him off ALL the garbage and Johnny doesn't even smoke anything anymore! He's talking a lot more and his playing has improved greatly. He was near death in the late 90s and every time I saw him I thought it might be the last time, but he's doing great now. I'd like to see anyone else 66 years old playing like he does.
@Bopalena It's far too late. He's done. He's got Alzheimer's or something similar and it no longer matters whether he smokes. @beeroosterm - Bullshit. That is a horrible clip, but watch the Highway 61 clip from a couple of months ago. It's a motherfucker and he certainly doesn't have Alzheimers. Why don't you talk about the theory relativity, something else you know nothing about? My grandfather had a saying for people like you - אל תבזבז את הזמן שלך מתווכח עם אידיוט
@Bopalena I've been Johnny's biggest fan since I was a little boy. I understand stating the brutal truth upsets you, but that's your problem, not mine. And I will indeed take your grandfather's advice against arguing with an idiot...
Yea, it's an acquired taste, however, if it does appeal to you, you're hooked without any hope of rehabilitation! Johnny's the best blues guitar player on the planet.
Well said. HOF and Jann Wenner have their heads up their asses...that's why their ears don't function. Johnny should have been inducted in the early 90's. Shit, Jann used to think (RS mag) that Zeppelin was mediocre. Like you said...a shit-can! (fuck, john mellenhead before Johnny Winter?)

I wouldn't even spit on the sidewalk in front of this "stupid waste of money." I'm surprised they have the Beatles and Stones there!!!!!!
Beefgog...just because you don't like them doesn't mean they don't deserve to be inducted. How about this : 31 years of music and tours...26 different albums...18 Platinum albums...55 million albums sold...many, many awards and commendations all throught their history. You don't have a clue!!
Look, everyone that does not like a band will think that the band should not be inducted, it is what people call can opinion, and you think diffrent, that does not mean I dont know anything about them. I dont like them. Just becuse you have an opinion does not mean you are right.
Yeah....hard to believe some of the best bands of the day aren't there. I was gonna go and visit until I found out the artists I grew up with/admired aren't there. No JW? No SRV? No GFR? And Alvin Lee is missing too? Who the fuck picks the bands? Whoever it is must be deaf! By the way....I've seen JW 15-20 times.
FUXGOOD...I've seen Johnny 6 times and could see him every night forever. Everybody who wants to play blues and R & R on guitar...you only need to learn from one man...Johnny Winter. Even his acoustic slide guitar blues are outstanding!! Check out who "IS IN" the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. There are bands there who shouldn't be. Some are shit! I'm sure I come up with many very deserving bands who should have been there years ago. One of the "biggest jokes in the USA...besides our president!!!
SUNKING2001...Your comment on JW acoustic slide reminds me of a show of his I saw in about 1977 at Juniors Inn in Edgewood, Md. JW came out with his acoustic and played by himself from 9 to about 1:30 a.m. Sat on a bar stool 5 feet from me. Ticket cost was a huge 5 bucks. LOL I still have my stub.
FUXGOOD...I'm trembling with envy. 4 1/2 hours of Johnny playing acoustic guitar...5 ft. away!!! That just shows what you and I already know...there is no one better...electric or acoustic!! He makes it look so effortless. The closest I came to a superstar was in '76 when I was 20 ft. away from Paul McCartney at the Cow Palace (near S.F.). This was the "Wings Over America" tour. The movie was titled "Rock Show"...filmed in Seattle. I don't have words to describe the 3 hours of excellence!!
I got to the club 2 hours before the show just so I could get a table right up front. It was a small place, maybe enough room for 200 or so. Tried like hell to get JW to sign my poster to no avail. I've been lucky enough to get close and even talk with numerous stars. A few of the ones I've actually talked to include Leslie West, Alice Cooper, Catfish Hodge of Little Feat, RL Burnside who was a most gracious fellow whom I spoke to for a good 1/2 hour, RLs son DuWayne Burnside, Little Richard.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is one of the "biggest jokes and shams in America". I would not walk across the street to visit this museum for free!! What a fucking joke!!
No shit and check this out...Jann Wenner makes final decision who goes into the hall. Last year DC5 was elected but Jann wanted a hip hop'r (GM Flash)in and pushed DC5 back to this year. But yes a joke! JD Winter not in the hall, Lonnie Mack...not in, Paul Rodgers not in, Ritchie Blackmore... not in. etc etc etc. A huge Joke and who fucking needs a hall of fucking Shame anyway?
OMG...you are so right!!! Come on people...I mean, be for real...Madonna?! And SRV or Johnny Winter aren't already there?! Well...we know...as Richard Pryor used to say..."It's the politics, baby". So messed up...whew...
Thanks for postimg this.I have all of Johnny's albums, and no one does it quite as well as him.great to see another YouTube interview, he's a real gentleman, and I just wish more of the kids would tune in to his music,I think they would benefit from it!
Hey, everyone. Check out the great clip on Youtube of Johnny on the Letterman show from 1983. He does a burning version of "Johnny B. Goode" followed by a way cool interview with Dave. Johnny rules, then, now and forever!!!
(Guitar Slinger), One of the Best Blues guitar albums EVER writtin! WHY DO I, SIT AND CRY, WITHOUT A REASON, I DONT KNOW WHY - ITS MY SOUL! OOOOOOOOOO, ITS MY SOUL! I DONT KNOW WHYYYY POEPLE, - OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO ITS MY SOUL! lololol
I'm a friend of Johnny's and here are some answers. Johnny's manager Paul Nelson helped him kick alcohol and the other garbage and he's clean, in great shape and tearin' it up! Johnny has been with Susan, a great lady who used to be his driver, for many years and no, he doesn't want any kids. I can relate to that!
Johnny Winters, awesome.Saw him at the Spectrum in philly 3 or 4 times, in the early 70s.Totally correct. Some of the best concerts ever, as I [barely] recall.JW and early j. geils, foghat, seatrain[fiddle],etc.johnny vs. edgar pleeeaaaasssseeeee.....
Yes, you can't beat a Gibson for tone and sustain. The "Erlewhine Laser" is very light and managable but lacks resonance, which is the main failing with miniminally built guitars. The same goes for the Steinberger.
I play in a very loud southern rock style band that tours alot.I played a Les Paul for years, night after night, and it gets heavy when your're tired and are expected to go bananas on stage(im not the biggest girl).I traded it for a '78 Tele Deluxe 'cause i love them, and guess what,i think its heavier but i dont care.Point is,if it sounds like shit when i play it unplugged on my couch,i dont want it.
This is superb. He did do another candid interview for the Canadian TV prog. "The New Music" around 1990. It was quite short and done right after a concert in Toronto. I think Lonnie Brooks also spoke highly about JW on that one.
Aha! I was hoping you saw that.Ya know, you can write the greatest songs ever like Dylan & The Beatles,or you can channel some freaky shit and play guitar.Johnnys solos play out like the greatest story ever told,Genius!
Yes, i was listening to his solo on Willie Dixon's "Mother Earth" from "Live In Houston/Busted In Austin".(absolute perfection) His solos on a slow 12 bar blues are always well constructed and approached from almost a jazz angle.
Interesting. The only other interview I've seen is Dunlop TV. He seems somewhat different...25 odd years in between.
He's such a private person, the opposite of Edgar. I'm curious about him personally. How did he finally kick the drugs? Does anyone know how long he's been married? Did he ever have any kids?
From what i've read over the years i think Johnny knew his wife Susan for many years. I think she was almost a groupie of his from decades ago. I don't think he'd chance having kids because of the albinism.(don't blame him and he aint missing much.) Although he kicked heroin i think he has always indulged in other substances like alcohol and weed but then his idol Muddy Waters was a big advocator of marijuana.
DOes anyone have the Johnny Winter appearance on the David Letterman show from 1983? He did "Johnny B. Goode" and David did a real nice quickie interview with him afterward. I'd love to see that one again!
Absolutely AWESOME!!!

Hey, everyone. Check out the great clip on Youtube of Johnny on the Letterman show from 1983. He does a burning version of "Johnny B. Goode" followed by a way cool interview with Dave. Johnny rules, then, now and forever!!!

Whatever, he's awesome.
