(norman) in 1066 harold the anglo-saxon king finally died at the battle of hastings and the normans/vikings took over we've never been conquered by anyone else.

Don't forget that the Anglo-Saxons, Frisians and the Jutes came from from the same shores 2-400 years earlier and spoke very much related & similar languages, so that the "two" languages (AS & Norse) were still mutually intelligible to some degree - ca. like D, N & S still are today.
This is VERY evident EVEN today and makes it fairly easy for us to learn E, since we in Scand. as if by "magic" already know a lot of the basics and don't have to think very much, when speaking E ;-)

We do have german roots, but only a small percent of the population then was actually german, or Saxon, so in my eyes, Britain is, was, and always shall be British. Not german. When thinking of both countries together, Britain sounds so great and glorious, and Germany... Some huge stains on their history. Britain remained predominantly British after the anglo Saxon merge, so we have always been british! :)

Despite all the racist crap on here no-one seems to be aware of the song's origins. It's from Thomas Arne's masque 'Alfred' (1740), on the life of the Anglo-Saxon king Alfred the Great. Arne used the story as an allegory to promote the political aspirations of the Prince of Wales who had fallen out with his father, George II. The naval theme actually refers to the anglo-saxon use of longships to mobilise forces against the Vikings in the 9th C, as well as Britain's war with Spain in the 18th C.
