  • holy shit the kid doesnt have the music turned up soo loud u cant even hear him playing like every other faggot on youtube! MAJOR points for that one. possibly the best youtube cover video ive seen. JUST because he didnt turn the song up.

  • Pick

  • what type of bass is that?

  • @Wolvve -- It's an Ibanez GSR200

  • pretty good man, love tool

  • don't worry picks are gay

  • It'd be so much easier to do some of these riffs if you used your pinky finger. lol

  • @Jedi318 ... youtube "TOOL - Forty Six & 2 live 1996 Pomona, CA"... 45 seconds in... and tell me what you see...

  • my teacher would kill you because of your fingering :D but its nice :-)

  • Your retarted it doesnt make someone a loser for using a different style you narrow minded retard apparently you dont know how to play bass and never will because you are retarted and song sounds better with a pick

  • yeah so you're saying Jutin Chancellor himself is also a loser. oh by the way, bias is a form of personal opinion.

  • Dude Justin plays with a pick . . . .

  • hell yea good job for not using a pick, thats way to get that good deep sound, keep it up little broseph

  • Ha. Everyone here is saying that picks suck, while the bassist of the band used a pick on all of the songs. Good deep sound is not what we want to hear on this song. We want punchy.

  • i fucking agree and the song does sound better with a pick it gives it more of an echo sorta like when u do pull offs

  • i commented to the wron gperson i dont really agree with u because its not meant to be a deep sound its meant to be a tweaked trble sorta like a fucking pull off

  • calm down, do you like the song the way it is? then leave it at that. everyone thinks they know everything about well...fucking everything. i was just givin him props like TWO MONTHS AGO and i still gotta hear bratty kids go off about what they know. tool rocks and you shannon are a cool guy. thanks for telling me what you thought. i cant wait to hear what youll think of next

  • brilliant, i can only play this one with a pick i dont know why. excellent job

  • which is fine cuz that's how Justin plays it. it actually sounds better with a pick so don't even worry about it.

  • And I can't see which frets are you using!!!!!!

  • Sorry =[ I actually recently redid this song and you can see/hear better but I haven't gotten around to uploading it yet.

  • @arturofuhrer he uses the 5th, 7th, 8th, 3rd, and 12th for the main riff.

    check out some tabs

  • Actually, you don't need to use the pinkie finger (in this song). All the frets of the song can be prefectly reached with the index and ring fingers. I´m not trying to say that the pinkie finger is useless, I just say that if you don't need to use it, don't worry, there are millions of songs you will.

  • Dont neglect the pinkie!

  • I now use it far more often than I did back when I recorded this, still a work in progress though =[

  • cool cover dude

  • Awesome cover, awesome original song, nice job

  • dude have you seen that other tab on the internet where it gets crazy at 2.43?? i've been trying to learn it that way but it's so hard if you wanna check it out and tell me if you can make sense of it that would be much appreciated!

by the way you're a cool player man even though my speakers are shitty it still sounds awesome

  • Really nice. You do the song justice.

Bass players gotta stick together, ya know?! =D

  • Yeah we do, or else the guitarists just keep making bad jokes =[ And thanks!

  • @FierceDeity2 Heh...we're sorry about that X]

  • I just started learning this song (main riff only) and its pretty darn awesome, you rock man. Get yourself a Flanger effect pedal to get it even more accurate. Rock on man, that was teh shizznit.

  • Thanks. Yeah I used flanger in this song but it's hard to tell because of the sound quality. I'd redo it with better sound but my pedal got fried...

  • That is really really good. I just started learning bass and this is one of the songs I would love to learn.

  • Thanks much. And work at it, you'll get there.. it's not too tough a song so you'll be able to play it in no time

  • go for it... i bought my first bass 4 days ago and already have this bass line down to a science. i'm a drummer at heart so rhythm comes natural and ive got a few years of very casual guitar playing... i feel these skills are really made learning bass a flash. i played 6 hours today! haha

  • dam good cover man i almost thought i was listening to the actual song, just a little deeper.

    nice

  • mucho talentoso senor.

  • gracias

  • Is it just me or does it sound like Justin's using a really slow phaser for 46 & 2? Listen carefully.

  • Dunno, my pedal broke :(

  • it could sound the same, couse your bass, an amp and that pedal is all you need.

  • dude. forty six and two is the shit ,. esp on bass.

  • nice cover dude keep it on ;D, just one tip, try to play Tool songs with a pick, sounds really good, i mostly use my fingers as well, but this kind of song sounds really good whit pick

  • yeah fun song to play, and good job on it.

  • Yo Dude you're really good...can u give me the tabs for this song i srearch for them alot but evertthing was sucks....by the way your bass relly beautiful I Have Wasburn T-24

  • wow talent. your good dude. i cant find this song on the internet in mp3 format. i might have to go to the store and buy the cd

  • Thanks a lot.. it's certainly a cd worth buying.

  • definitely an album worth having around

  • nice cover. my friend has that bass. ibanez gsr-200?

  • Yep, and thank you.

  • Wow youre awesome =D

  • Haha, thanks? =P

  • Nice job!!! Thanks for sharing.

  • Thank you and I hope it helped/entertained you!

  • nice cover

  • It's nice to see people play with their fingers. You could use a little more treble though. And I know a lot of people don't have this, but to reach the effect in the record, use a chorus pedal, or light flanger.

    Nice job btw

  • I used Chorus in it, you just can't really tell because of the audio quality :P Thanks though

  • hey can u actually use Digitech BP200 to make the bass sound like an electric guitar?

  • I imagine you could do that without a pedal.. Just turn up the treble and mid and eliminate as much bass as possible. Not sure why you would want to, though.

  • sometimes playing just the bass, gets a bit boring lol^^

  • I wouldn't normally approve a stupid comment like this one, but how could I pass up the chance to call you a dumbass for not knowing how to spell 'boring'?

  • i think its sweet you used your fingers, gives it a smoother sound. if your gonna use a pick than you should play the guitar lol

  • Haha, thank you =]

  • I agree, if you wanna use a pick, use a guitar where speed is actually needed more, bassists should always use fingers for that stereotypical smooth and accurate tone

  • fuck how many times......play tool with a pick...nice bass by the way..o one more thing..in the beginning they are pulloffs!

  • I used pull-off's where needed.

  • wow tools bassist is really good..even though this is pretty simple..it really goes well with the song

  • Yeah, they come up with some pretty creative and fun basslines

  • Tough song- you must be buggared after 6 min of that lol!

  • Haha, oh it's not too bad, it's just trying to get a perfect run that's a pain. Thanks though!

  • nice dude...it could use some high end brightness though...sounds a little muffled.

    playing is pretty good though.

    jmo

  • Thanks. Yeah I know what you mean, there are a number of factors that contributed that, one being the sound quality of my digital camera. But yeah, thanks!

  • it just sounds way fuller with a pick, specially if ur using the delay, u can make it sound like its skipping

  • I don't think it sounds fuller so much as it just cuts through more.

  • Wow man... Great cover man Nice bass too I don't use pick either haha I think it's easier Keep doing good man you kick ass

  • Thanks a lot =D

  • gj on the cover =). also, fingering is the way a bass is meant to be played, dont let people tell you otherwise. I know Tool plays with a pick, and i know im gonna get alot of bad comments and thumbs down but idc =). keep it up. Tool is awesome too

  • Thanks a lot :) And I would agree, fingers all the way

  • Very narrowminded saying that fingers is the only way to play bass. It depends on the style of music, and the tone you want. granted you dont play jazz with a pick, but if you want to get near justin chancellors tone i would definatly use a pick, you just cant get the aggresion from playing with fingers, espcially for his tone. he smaks the shit out of his strings with a plectrum.

  • I'm fine with people playing with picks, I even used one for my other Tool cover on here. I just meant that I for one prefer to play with fingers.

  • Bass isnt meant to b played with the fingers. It wuz the first style. But like music as time progresses the styles change.

  • i agree. thats like saying that jimi hendrix wasn't meant to play with his teeth.

  • Nice cover man! Its great to see you play it with fingers and put your own flavour on it instead of just immitating the original. This is what a COVER is all about, Your interpretation! 5 *

  • Thanks a lot man lol =] JUst watched yours, very creative, far moreso than mine, I really like it. But yeah, thanks for the comment

  • You did damn good. Few mistakes here and there of course, but meh, whatever. The only thing that bugged me was, as good as you may be playing fingerbass, all Tool songs are played with a pick. Good cover regardless though.

  • Thanks! And yeah, I know haha, I'm just not overly good with a pick. I did manage it for the other Tool cover I have posted on here though.. Eulogy. But yeah, thanks!

  • You stole Jesus' fingers and use them for the devil's music... That's so metal.

  • Haha, thank you?

  • dude that is bad ass! It would sound a little more like Justin if you used a pick of course but that is still a great job man!

  • Haha, yeah, at the time I recorded this though I had almost 0 experience with a pick though so ah well :P Thanks a lot though

  • dude...the bassist for tool is awesome...but all the best bassists finger pick...so honestly i like how this sounds more though it doesnt look like he has %100 right on notes...its so hard to find the real tabs now a days cuz of the god damn copy right bastards are having fucking bitch fits over ppl wanna to learn their fav artists songs for some reason

  • Yeah, I like it better with fingers too, bad sound quality in this vid though. And haha, they're just a sinking ship trying to prolong the inevitable ;)

  • some poser bass player said, "just keep practicing on the right hand so you can do it faster". i dont agree with that, some are just born to be fast. LIKE ME! lol

  • Lol, I suppose it has something to do with the muscle types.

  • I agree with ya on the picks.

    I cant use em either.

Fingers are better in my opinion.

    More Versatile

  • Yep, I can play with them faster as well, but maybe that's just because I'm more used to them

  • cool! parts of it sound so low i'm surprised it's not a 5-string.

  • Thanks! Yeah, probably just because it's in drop D and I have my Low end turned way up and my high end turned way down lol

  • you could show how to play schism?

  • Yepyep, need some new strings and new cables.. once I get those there are a few new songs I'll post including that one.

  • how its thats procesor it¨s good?

  • The pedal? I like it, certainly useful especially since i don't have the money to spend on all the individual effects pedals

  • pretty good, i use fingers too, im pretty good at the song but as same wit u i dont have alot of it memorized as of now since iv only been rly getting into as of a coujple days ago

  • You'll get it down eventually, not too hard, and good luck ;) Thanks too

  • Dude that sounds sick man. Your great

  • Thanks alot =]

  • Once again, sweet ass. Is that an Ibanez Soundgear?

  • Thanks again :P and yes it is

  • are you using a chorus pedal? nice job by the way. but i was just wondering

  • It's a BP-200 (multi-effects) pedal but yes I was using the chorus in this video though it's kinda hard to tell due to the sound quality. And thanks!

  • you would find it easy to go up to an F in on the D string if you tuned D-A-D-A. It's how it is done on the recording.

  • good cover, but you need to learn to use your pinky on your fretting hand, and clean up your right hand technique, but still a good vid.

  • Oh yay some criticism that's constructive. Yeah I know, my pinky is just next to uesless and my fingers don't spread out that well.. Have to work on it I suppose. Also I've been working on my right hand a bit lately. Anywho! Thanks

  • Great camera views, but one thing's wrong. If you want to make that good treble sound, try using the middle and index finger, and from almost under. You can try it once, it worked for me. Practice helps you move it faster for beats

  • You mean kinda sorta almost popping it? lol I do use my middle and index in this vid, but I think the main problem in this vid was my amp. Just got a new one yesterday and it sounds soooo much better than the one from this vid. About 10 times as loud too =]

  • Yer, almost popping it, a slap technique, but not a slap, if you know what I mean...

  • Thank you for having good lighting and a good focal point for playing and not having the stereo up too loud. YAY.

  • Haha, you're welcome :P And thanks also, now if only I had a better mic built into my camera

  • you have great skills for a 16 year old (i thought you were twelve)

  • Haha, thanks I guess

  • how old are you??!

  • When this was recorded I think I'd recently turned 16

  • Same exact bass I got.

  • Yeah, it's served me well thus far, great for the money.

  • All I have to do now is figure how how I can play the bass line on my 6 string and I'll be set...

  • Dogg, that sounds sick to death...Love it man...Probably one of the most recognized bass lines in music...

  • Thanks! And yeah, it's a fun one

  • don't listen to the idiots saying here that you should use a pick. it sounds just fine with the fingers. keep your own sound, even when it's not your own stuff. good job anyway

  • Thank you :) And gah, finding my own sound... I'm still doing that haha, just last night I redid all my EQ, I think I really need a new amp. Ah well, maybe for Christmas

  • finding a good sound sucks but once you do its so worth it. you'll find it eventually don't sweat it too much.

  • Hope so, thanks =]

  • np man.

  • bloody hell mate good job ay taught heaps of shit bout the timing and shit good on ya blokey

  • who gives a fuck i f y amake faces mike mangini is a great musician and makes weird facial expressions watch any guitarist they mimik bends and what not with their facial expressions plus its better tahn standing around like afukin robot u are a cunt

  • Haha, wow, thanks

  • Another great cover. I play bass, and not very well, love Tool. Great job, you are very relaxed playing which shows talent, you flow. Who gives a crap about facial expression when playing difficult bass?? Geesh. Everyone's a critic. But mostly it is from people who don't even play bass....but wish they could! You are very talented.

  • Thanks alot :) Perhaps I should upload Eulogy soon, I'm getting pretty good at it. Also working on Rush - Xanadu

  • Please join virtualrockband[dot]com. We need more bassists.

  • its ok, an easy song perhaps, fun to play cuz its makes anyone sound like they know how to play good bass, oh and rake finger style is great for this song, u just fucked up a little. Justin Chancellor dont use a fuckin' pick

  • Yes, it's pretty easy, I can play this song a thousand times better than I did here, as I keep saying I'd reupload, but I'll wait till I can play it well with a pick, I never use one so eh, getting used to it for Tool songs.

  • Yeah he does use a pick, go to any good quality video and see.

  • i really think u need to work on ur facial expresion and u have no chinalso isnt this played on a oboe?

  • Normally I wouldn't approve such an idiotic post that is at least somewhat of a joke. I only do because yes, I am aware I make strange faces alot of the time :( lol

  • You have a habit of hitting other strings which muddies up the sound a lot. Try dampening the other strings with your other fingers. Also it gets really badly out of time when you start playing

    A|5-8-12-3-5

    D|0-8-12-3-5

Overall it's ok but you really need to work on it a while.

  • I'm not the greatest ever when it comes to muting other strings.. Maybe that's why I suck so much at slap and pop hehe. I think alot of the problem in this video though was just the sound quality (recorded on my digital camera) and my EQ settings (which I've now changed up). As for being out of time you're probably right, hard to hear that bit, I'll listen to it closer with headphones. Thanks for the advice though =]

  • Play some Gorguts Tim.

  • Stephen?

  • it sounds better if you use a pick, makes it cut more( i like to use my fingers too, but pick sounds soo much better) try it :)

  • Yeah, I was messing around with a pick just the other day and I definitely agree, sounds way better with a pick. Unfortunately I've hardly even touched a pick since I started playing so I'll have to practice hehe. Once I get it down though I'll reupload though :) Along with some other Tool songs I've learned

  • man thats awesome!! i love tool's basses theyre just sick!! keep on rockin'! by the way which bass are you using?

  • Thanks a lot :) I can play this song much better now, perhaps I should resubmit it. The bass is an Ibanez GSR200, would really like to get a new one though, I've had my eye on the Geddy Lee Jazz Bass for a while now >.> *sigh, maybe some day

  • i dont see whats so hard about this bass part

    but good job

  • Oh, nothing's really very hard about it, it's just a fun song. Thanks though

  • dude, thats fucking awesome:) how long have u been playing?

  • Ah, thanks alot =]

Oh jeez, that depends, I first got my bass in... 6th grade, so about 5 years, but I've not been playing consistently like I am now that whole time and there were some really large gaps due to my bass being out of state and this and that and yeah...

  • sick man, i really wanna learn 2 play..i had a dream about playing this song...lol but as im ur age.... it may take me awhile...ah well i get my bass in august, hopefully ill be playin it soon:/

  • Ah it's a fun song =] You can always learn though, with all the gaps and shit I've not been playing all too long, good luck though

  • Most excellent!

  • Good one Man! I play it on the guitar! Love this song & love the bass parts especially on intro

  • I don't know, Ti,. I don't listen to Tool anymore. But watching you play makes me want to get a bass even more, so I can learn to out bass your weird lookin' ass.

  • Well you should listen to Tool still >: \ And I make weird faces when I play sometimes :S

  • Good job dude!Keep playing, this is pretty good man. The only advice I would give is to play with a pick. All Tool should be played with a pick.

  • Thanks alot man, you're Brad from the TT forums right? Saw some of your vids and you've got great stuff. And yeah, I need to practice my picking skills P:

  • i'm a bassist, and ur well on ur way, dude.

  • Hey, thanks alot :) Nice to know I'm not as bad as I'd thought :P
