  • Hello, I am hoping you can answer a question I have... I have a 1983 Johnson 175 in which I am planning on doing new pistons and rings in. I am needing to know if those motors have Nikasil cylinders? I am having a tough time finding out the answer to that question. Thanks in advance!

  • Do you have an accurate idea of how much fuel the motor uses at a given revolution rate?

    per hour,

    L

  • You are one good honest mechanic , you will have a lot of friends and age peacefully over your life time but never be rich.

  • lol 3 grand u can build a jet boat motor for that price

  • you have to get the mike next to you because you sound so far away even with the volume full

  • Wow that is some serious piston slappage.

  • $3K for 6 pistons, rings and machine work is quite reasonable, same price around here (Boston).

    Its worth doing.

    Good video.

  • That motor's about 25 years old and probably not worth $3000 to fix one cylineder, especially if the engine is worn in general.

  • Very well put about the oil, you know your stuff :) Keep up the good work!

  • Hey Marine Dr.

You need an outboard on the back of that ambulance.

  • :)

    Yes I do

    TMD

  • Lake test the boat and see if it performs well enough. <---that is the best way to check it.

After the lake test, check the gear oil for filings.

    TMD

  • Yea, but since I have no previous experience with similar boats it's hard to say if its underperforming or not. I'm bringing a service man with a pc to check it electronically. Tnx.

  • Hi there. Im looking to buy a Ryds 600 GT with a Evinrude 175hp from 1993. It's been recently renovated he say, but I have no knowledge of boat engines. What should I look for?

  • i hate ppl like the "other dealer" they dont diagnose the engine right and they just charge ppl for crap tht doesnt do anything

  • Can't believe he wasn't running tcw 3... I feel so bad for the customer for spening all the money for the previous mechanic. I hope he just spends the money fixing that one cylinder... Sigh, darn boat motors are money pits haha, but they are fun to have when they work ; )

  • I actually had a guy show up at the shop the other day insisting I sell him TCW2 because that is what his manual called for....made for a tough sell when I had to convince him that TCW3 was its replacement.

  • I didn't even realize that retailers still sold TCW outboard Oil. I guess I just assumed it was all TCW III, at this point. My 1981 Evinrude 200 Cross Flow had a cylinder go, it ran me about $3,000, but that included a rebuilt power trim, Tstats, and water pump, as well.

  • Did I say 1981; OOpps... It is a 1979, 200. The boat is an '81.

  • most dumb asses makes exuses for people that dont know alot about engines and rip them off like a car just to change 8 spark plugs and its fucking $300 damn i can spend $40 and do it my self i know i knew a good guy that rebuilted my sea doo and ran and works like new and even warranty for 1 year not most dealers would like in this video changed the vro pump 2 times for no reason

  • The VRO pump is designed to save motors by running 100:1 at idle. during trolling this can prevent carbon deposits.

  • The VRO pump is the common "diagnosis" of untrained technicians. "Voltage regulator", now that's a "new one"....The old V-6 cross flow engines are great old engines but do use much more fuel than the new ones. Most "mechanics" can probably replace the faulty piston and make the engine run again.....But, there are very few that can actually do the job correctly giving the customer a reliable engine that will last for years.

  • so glad i got rid of my old worn out 2 stroke motors.

  • 2 strokes will only wear down internally from owner neglect... run an engine to lean your going to run into problems or run an engine with the wrong oil your going to run into problems... if you keep them oiled properly they will last a long long time, i have a 1970 merc i removed the intake cover and viewed the pistons they look clean as hell.... 4 strokes are the same situation, run them low on oil and its gonna give your problems...

  • the diagnosos was RIGHT ON!!! that engine MAY have indeed required all 6 pistons to be replaced, or it may have required 1, WE didnt get to see that part of it... the rules for compression testing is +/-10% across ALL cylinders... 85 is a DEADON TIME TO REBUILD #### if others are at 110 or more...

  • TMD is the man

  • but a new outboard will cost more than the repairs.

  • It's up to you. Each piston costs about $40 + gaskets...plus the mechanic... He probably ended up spending more than $500 plus it's going to have more problems next year. Newer Evinrude 175 coasts about $4000 used. Better on gas and more enviromental friendly + trusting your outboard on water and not dealing with mechanics.

  • Fair enough but why go buy another used one for $4000 only to have it pack out the same way? The thing is one the motor has been fixed with new rings etc etc it will last much longer than buy another second hand one.

  • Unless it's a vintage motor. I wouldn't spend money on it. The new engines are more efficent and needs less care and lets not forget better performance. It's not just the pistons and the rings that will go bad, Even the prop bearings go bad after a while . The money spended on the old motor can be the payments made on a new motor. But If you are in love with your engine it's your choice. I think about the safety first when I'm on water.

  • It is quite clear that TheMarineDoctor indicated option #1 would be to re-ring the offending cylinders (ie. no need for new pistons). Only if the cylinders were out of spec would a rebore (oversize pistons) be required. Best case, it needs one oversize bore and one new piston with just new rings on the rest. Thats what he said.

  • Perfect example of the highly competitive world of Marine Mechanics!! 85psi . . . perfect candidate for a one hole fix. What is he talking about replace all the pistons . . . poor customer getting bent over again!!

  • wow...way to run TCW oil from who knows when. thats how the knck probably started anyways. The previous dealer is dumb, i couldve told that customer what was wrong with it.

  • this guy ripped him off too!!!

no need to change all pistons!

  • good vid

  • whoever they brough that engine to first must have sucked. anytime you hear of engine knock, DO A COMPRESSION TEST. idk how they figured a voltage regulator and 2 VRO pumps would do anything to stop that lol.

  • and a mechanic that was paid $1000 to repair it couldnt fix it???

  • I wish my mach was that helpful. good video!
