If you want to do this from a first person perspective in a fantastic Game, with more than 200 other human players at the same time in a battle, I suggest Mount & Blade: Warband.

There is even mods that allow you to play in the time of Rome, Vikings, Napoleon and many more.

@recliptix Peasants in medieval warfare weren't that good unless they had experience. Inexperienced peasants were brawlers or if you were English or Welsh, brawling archers, however most were just brawlers. This made them easy game for experienced troops who could counter properly as most peasants just threw themselves at their opponents. While this tactic could be useful if they outnumbered their foe, on a one to one basis it made them ineffective troops for campaigns against militarised foes.
