@bbri1991 Always finishing second (Boston in '86), Orioles a couple of times in the '80s, and of course Donnie's balky back near the end of the decade. I often wonder why also, because there was only one or two medicore years in there. I didn't become a full-fledged Yankee fan until Deion showed up in '89 (Mets before that) but I did keep up with the Yanks fervently.
1987 was a weird season, the Yanks got out of the gate well, and actually led the AL East by 5 games on July 4, but fell apart after the All Star break and finished 4th in a very tough division with 89 wins...the Yanks actually won more games than the eventual world champs (Twins)
I remember that Yankee team very well, i was living in MA and my girlfriend had PIX on her cable, i loved the yanks and who couldn't with Scooter and White. That was a special year...hey i married her in '88 and still going strong! (three sons..all Sox fans...go figure)
Hate the Boss if you want but business wise he's a fucking genius. I remember watching the Yanks most of the 80's and early 90's and for many years they were hard to watch. The Boss kept plugging away and once he got the YES Network it was a wrap for everyone else. He took over the baseball world after that. And to think that the Yanks can spend a lot more on players than they already do is a testiment to what the Boss did for the Yankees.
@Yoseman1 you know, as bad as the team was in the 80s-mid 90s I would like to see a game from 1988 or 1989, which was the year I was born (NOT 1992). Every time I watch Yankees Classics it's one from the late 70s to about 1983. But I'm guessing the games from the late 80s were nothing to miss either?
The Yankees actually won more regular season games in the 1980s, than any other team. 1981 was their best year in the decade. The Yankees could have won another Championship or two in the 1980s, if they would have kept Reggie Jackson. Imagine a lineup with Mattingly, Jackson, Henderson, and Winfield. Have Henderson bat leadoff, have Mattingly protect Jackson, and bat Winfield 5th. They could have won at least once or twice in the decade.
man i remember a lot of players on that team(don mattingly, dave winfield, rickey henderson, mike pagliarulo, bobby meacham, dan pasqua, etc..) great memories
@MrMorningside125 Claudell Washington, Bob Tewksbury, Ron Kittle, Dennis Rasmussen....etc. Man, I was a kid but NY baseball was an addiction and still is.
The Mets didn't have much of a chance to win "the 2007 & 2008 National League East" as John McCain & Sarah Palin didn't win the 2008 U.S. Presidency. The "Phillies" continue to show mockery over the "New York Mets"
Many memories, I remeber these days when the yanks would begin in first place and then go downhill the rest of the season. This when selected areas had cable in NYC. SC took the games in 87' and then in 88 MSG took over. It was sad becuase 95% of the bronx at that time had no cable, I think it was only riverdale and Pelham that had it... But anyway how many yankee fans nowadays can remember the dark days of this area. Thanks to Don Mattingly who gave me a reason to be a Yankee fan...
Man oh man does this bring me back to my childhood! What a GREAT post.
Good ol 1987 Yankees. Rickey Henderson got hurt, and Fucking Wade Boggs sat out the last 2 or 3 games of the season so Mattingly wouldn't beat him for the batting title.
You're right/ I should've remembered that. I do rememebr watcing The Giants game afterward, and the announcers saying Bill Parcells would be happy for Wade Boggs because he was a Red Sox fan.
My mind is going in my old age, but I do remember Rickey Henderson missing a lot of that season
Whenever Rickey was in a contract year he was the second coming of Willie Mays. Kind of like Manny Ramirez....but without the stupidity (and quitting on your former team). Just think....what those Yankee teams of the mid-80's could have done if they had any starting pitching whatsoever.
Nice leap and grab by right fielder Dan Pasqua in front of a half empty Yankee Stadium. Years before the place would be packed with the bandwagon fans you see today.
I'm not one of those fans - when I used to go to games, I was one of those rabid female fans. I would love to go to a game, but I haven't exactly dated Yankees fans...or have been able to get tickets in the last five years or so!
As for Rickey Henderson...I can't believe he got in the Hall of Fame...
Why is it that you can't believe that Rickey made the Hall of Fame? He was a great player. He deserved to make it. Even Rickey thinks that Rickey deserved to make the Hall of Fame.
Oh ok - in that case, I'd rather see Rickey get it.
I'm not that up on Yankees baseball - I live in South Jersey and don't see much of what goes on in Yankees baseball - down here, its Phillies country! Try not getting pissy everytime the Phillies are introduced as "Your World Champion Phillies."
My ex was an obsessive Phils fan (used to ditch me to watch games), so as you can see, I am not fond of the Phils.
I think the WPIX should broadcast Yankees Baseball again at thesame time with the YES NETWORK, because i see that theres no chemestry in the Mets Games. So in the local channels The Mets should go back to WWOR-TV and bring the Yankees back to WPIX channel 11.
Yep, I grew up without cable and lost a chunk of Yankee games as a 10-year-old boy. I was outraged! It started with MSG being home to about 50 games a season, which wasn't so awful, but just the idea that baseball was no longer free was absolutely insane.
A few years later, it was the other way around (50 free TV). Now I think it's about 25 including the national game of the week on FOX. Crap, times have changed.
I agree. Times have changed and definitely not for the better. As far as growing up w/o cable, and missing a lot of Yankees games, you are preaching to the choir. Those were the days.
Yankees on WPIX 11. Nothing like hearing the Scooter to get a Yankee fan exicited. These times were great to see more baseball games on free TV and the simple graphics were great. If anyone's got some game footage from WPIX, plz share.
If I am not mistaken, Donna Hanover the former Mrs. Rudy Giuliani currently hosts Fine Living's Famous Homes & Hideaways which is distributed by none other than WPIX's owner, Tribune Entertainment.
I enjoyed the clip. Those were great times, seeing the Yankees on WPIX with Murcer, and Phil "The Scooter" Rizzuto calling the games. Rizzuto's stories were hilarious, and Murcer is one of my favorite announcers. If you can find any more Yankees on WPIX promos, I would greatly appreciate it.
Glory days! The Scooter was a favorite in my house, as was Bobby. Sad days when they died.
We met Rizzutto at a local mall here in South Jersey in September 1994 - the day that Jim Abbott pitched the no-hitter. He was talking to my dad for a few minutes - what a nice guy - signed the picture with "Holy cow!" that I presented to him at the signing.
Sorry to comment whore but you said it man. Hearing just that part of the song made me look for the music video of the song here on YT. It made you get so psyched up for these games back in the days. Freaking glory days, man! Nothing like it! Again, great video. Short but sweet.
You are absolutely right. Any many people did not have MSG yet. They took away many games that PIX would have had on. The beginning of the dark days of big-time cable
