Music to my ears. I'm just now restoring an old 330 MB drive to retrieve some old data, and it has that same delicious sound. Can't wait to hear it start churning all that data.
Hmm. This is how I'm going to feel when my Packard Bell XT clone comes. It has a last-gasp 3.5" 20MB ST-125 MFM drive. I already know it has a leisurely 40 millisecond seek time. I'll bet it has a pretty interesting sound too. One that would shock anyone who's never used an 80's PC. Probably more nails to chalkboard than jet to tarmac though. After all, it's not an Ampex or CDC. If I can score such server-tier kittage cheap, that'll be my "you did whaaat?" upgrade...
@ZnaxQue No. ESDI uses the same cables, but the signals are different and ESDI runs at higher bit rates (10 Mbit/s and up). ESDI was also intended to be a little smarter and support multiple drive types, but no one really took advantage of those features before SCSI-2 and IDE killed it.
IBM made ESDI drives for their Thinkpad 700 series PS/2 notebooks. They are the only ESDI hard drives in that form factor I know of. And they use a special connector not found on any other ESDI drive.
I have the Same one, but it doesnt spin up.
