I think a bit of tone comes from using the fingers, instead of a pick also. That changes the attack. You really notice it if you record and listen to yourself.

I just answered my own question, as I learned his riffs. The tone is mostly the use of the fingers, hitting the notes clear, sliding in the right places.  My basic single tone is clean like a single coil, but when you hit two notes it blossums into some distortion, and judicious use of that two note overlaps controlled by the careful dampening is where the fat tone comes from. And love those darn, bluesy riffs David is teaching us.
