  • Fabulous thank you

  • so many songs by scott joplin

  • Error with the 1936 name too

  • Oh, and I highly agree with neisharie :)

  • In the description, you have 1910 as "Hilarity Rag" by James Scott, when in the video, its "Swanee River" by Henry Burr

  • You should get an award for your efforts. I'm not kidding. Sir if I ever meet you, I'd like to shake your hand and thank you.

  • Gotta include Dixieland and On the Banks of the Wabash.

  • On American Dad, 1901-Stars and Stripes Forever (John Phillip Sousa) sounds like a remake of their theme song.

  • Thanks it helped me for a homework that I had and btw very nice songs ;)

    Greetings.

    DanielRey

  • I'm saddened and embarrassed to admit that I've always thought of "Sing Sing sing with a Swing" (1937) as "The Mr. Peanut song". I am 32. *hangs head in shame* lol

  • 1922 song is just beautiful.

Are you sure that Puttin On The Ritz that you included in your list isn't sung by Fred Astaire and not Harry Richman? 'Cause it sure sounds like him.

  • Very cool selection...many I never knew the title of but had heard before. Thanks for posting.

  • Very enjoyable! Nice selection. Thank You!

  • the 1904 song creeped me out though..

  • @Huckabeezer Dude wtf? The video may not be your cup of tea, but there's no reason to be a complete asshole about it.

  • How come the Joplin recordings are so clean compared to the others?

  • Four numbers that should have been included: The Carter Family--'Wildwood Flower'; Blind Lemon Jefferson--'Black Snake Moan'; Patsy Montana--'Cowboy's Sweetheart'; and Roy Acuff--'Wabash Cannonball'. Other than that, a pretty good summary. It's sad they gave you shit about using the great Cab Calloway's 'Minnie The Moocher'; oh, well....

  • That was really fascinating stuff!! It made me put myself into those early years where the music would be mostly instrumental, and each would have a mix of the melancholy to the uplifting tunes; this is the first time I have heard music going right back to the early 20th century although there were surprisingly quite a few I actually recognise!! Great stuff!!

"JUST ANOTHER 20-HOUR WORK DAY" - THE GARMENT GALS

    "I CAN'T GET ENOUGH MONEY" - THE VANDY'S

  • MY LIST

  • woowww you are the best, your list is amazing, and sorry whit my english is very bad... congrats.

  • thios was awesome thank you for posting it!!!!

  • Thank you. I hope that you can make 10 most popular song of each year:)

  • For example, from Billboard's list, the #1 song from 1908 was "Take me out to the ball game"

  • Billboard posted top songs from 1890 to present. None on the "top" songs from your list were #1 songs for the early years. Top songs from the early years were based on sheet music sales as record sales were not tracked.

  • Comment removed

  • come josephine should be in that list =)

  • What, no Glenn Miller?

  • Just try to buy 78 records if you want to "own" these pieces. It's an interesting field to collect in, and the site 78discography com is an excellent resource for discovering artists from this era. But keep in mind, in 1911 a new 78 record cost 75 cents, equivalent to 15 bucks today, alot of money for just a few minutes of music in those pre-radio days.

  • Could I please have a link to the original compliments, so I might listen to the full songs of the versions you posted, they are so much better than older versions or when others play them. It would be most helpful to my soul. Thanks

  • Stars and Stripes isn't in the playlist...

  • it must be so hard to find so old music! it's a little...nostalgic, i don't know if I'm saying the right word. it's so...different. i didn't know that recorded so back at that time!

  • this is 400000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000x9587397.47653^1874617826487 times better than justin bieber

  • its so interesting listening to these old songs

  • excelente recopilacion mi estimado king, de echo y gracias a tu recopilacion pude saber el nombre de una cancion que me gusta, pero que no sabia como se llamaba, bueno hasta luego saludos desde mexico compadre

  • I wish the best song from 1926 would have been "My Dream of the Big Parade" by Billy Murray, which summed up what WW1 was all about.

  • Interesting pic. I've only seen her with the frost-blond wig. - Naked Lady Gaga. C000M -

  • are you serious, euorope has more famous songs from that period like historia de un amor, besame mucho, sur le ciel de paris,la vie en rose, there are plenty of them.Saying that only england and america has music after 1900's is insulting,i know many songs but i am afraid making spelling mistakes.Only ancient, classical?man you have to learn a lot.Europe had the most famous music until 70's.

  • how did you decide who made the top song?

    thanks for sharing

  • you must put some european songs, the europe had for sure the best songs before 60's

  • @MyDreamside if the best songs pre 1960 are all european, where does that leave jazz and all genres it birthed? i understand 'european' music to be incredibly diverse, but generally it is thought of as either based on classical compostition, or the ancient melody structures of folk like the gypsies, celts, etc. what songs would you include 1900-1960? it would be an interesting list to see. there was one at least 'european' here; long road to tipperary. thanks for sharing

  • geese joplin raped the 1900's...

  • Where can I download these? Thanks!

  • Most of the recordings between 1902-1910 sound a bit too good for being that old...

  • sisters/ brothers we know each and everything about music all. everything all.

  • i love everything

  • its so weird you know, all those music especially the [the entertainer] sounds so familair, while I was born in the 90s.

  • It's one of those songs that gets used over and over.

  • Excellent! Enjoyed all of it...every moment,, every bit of tune,...thank you!

  • 100 thumbs up, 0 down. Pretty rare to see. Anyways, you just got the 101st thumb up. Thanks for posting.

  • could we get a play list?:D

  • hehe. putting on the ritz is amazing! :D

  • I think you forgot Al Jolsen, he was very popular in the teens and 20's

  • The one from 1937 sounds familiar. It best represents a line of people with top hats

  • Thank you so much for creating this montage. I'd heard sing sing sing with a swing on numerous programmes, but could never track down the title. Off to download it now ;)

  • Where is Duke Ellington? He is one of the best songwriters of the 30's!

  • @MrKevin624 i agree

  • @MrKevin624 Agreed! He was the father of NYC Harlem Renaissance.

  • joplin was brilliant with a piano

  • Rhapsody in Blue is my Favorite. Thanks to Woody Allen.

  • I've got a W.C. Handy recording of St. Louis Blues, if you're interested.

  • The 1910s had good music.

  • ah yes i remember when star and stripes came out in 1901

  • where did u get the recording of swipesy cakewalk

  • although i totally agree, who are you to choose?

  • C'mon, no Al Bowlly!?

  • "Sing Sing Sing with a Swing" looks like "Hit the road Jack"

  • wow i never knew scott joplin had so many hits ! brilliant!

  • 1934 - It's amazing the this melody, 'Greensleeves' is first recorded (on paper!) in the 1580's. It must be the oldest actual tune (leaving out plain chant) in existence.

  • No, there are songs from earlier than that, but it is a great piece however. And there are more of them. I've been thinking of making a collection of music and post them ito youtube, selfishly picking out songs from centuries past.

  • It's noticeable how much better the original recordings get from 1927 when they moved from acoustic to electrical recording methods.

  • it's just an amazing collection, i'm enjoying it so much

  • On Wikipedia it says, puttin on the ritz is published in 1929 by Irving Berlin and introduced by Harry Richman in the musical film Puttin' on the Ritz in 1930.

  • Goodness! Most of those are just too shrill to listen to. Easy on the noise reduction.

  • Have you any music clips from 1917, of better quality?

  • Thank you for gathering these good old tunes. I was born in 1950, but still enjoy these oldies but goodies.

  • Didn't they used a 1900's tune in a Ghost Hunters's episode and got 3 ghostly faces on camera looking back at them and activity in an empty diner hall?. That was amazing.

  • 1937 is the best! I have it on my MP3 because i remember hearing it play on that Tower Of Terror movie when i was little

  • I cannot find the original carol of the bells anywhere for some reason.

  • I cheated on Carol of the Bells. I recorded a more recent version of the song with a really poor recording program to get it that "old" sound. The song was first sung in 1916, but I doubt there are any recordings of it from that long ago.

  • That make sense.

  • man i really want to hear the original recording of carol of the bells.

  • @King689 I have recordings from 1905 & 1908 of "Hearts & Flowers" by the Victor Orch so why would a 1916 rec. not exist?

  • @JRussoBuffaloNY I was talking about a 1916 recording of Carol of the Bells. I'm sure there were other recordings being made at that time.

  • same here

  • This video was produced by the NAACP?

  • reminds of my youth...we marched proudly with Gen. Pershing in France

  • Only they don't have mobile phones back in the day.

  • Damn, we're going waaaaaay back here. People who grow up with most of these songs are probably long dead.

  • Scott Joplin was a beast in the 1900s.

  • my favorite of all time is defenitly 1930 Puttin' On The Ritz! Also thank you so much for uploading! :)

  • Wooooooooooooooo Entertainer!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • LOL I HATE THE FIRST SONG

  • i want more1930s songs plese more
