Terrific interview. King skilfully reins in the uber teaser Brando. Even in his twilight years, Brando, for me the Godfather of them all, was at his charismatic and narcissistic best. Even if Brando did nothing else, Waterfront and Street Car Named Desire is still the standard that very few actors if any have achieved.
Brando is the type of clown who could waffle off about his black friend the entire interview if Larry didn't interrupt him. THAT is why Larry is a good interviewer, you have to be able to control your guests. I don't want to hear about your black friend you bafoon, I came to hear YOUR story
Mr. Brando knew, before hand, what kind of interviewer and person Mr. King is. He wouldn't have done the interview had he not thought he could handle it even if it was required. If he hated the man he wouldn't have done it. Mr. King did push too much and it's tiresome because they are such different people you are on the edge of your seat all the time. Ratings were important having a man who rarely got interviewed. Larry just wanted to make sure his station got its $'s worth. My opinion.
I dunno I guess I am so happy Brando is willing to talk here that I am less frustrated than in other interviews. THe fact is Brando loves to digress of flip the script and I think he is only opening up because Larry is so forthright and does not Corner guests very often. I mean he was the king of the softballs. But I do understand peoples frustrations.
Larry King seems to have had so many guest with little intelligence that he can't seem to quiet understand how to interview Marlon Brando. He thinks Marlon was being indirect but he wasn't, he was being completely frank with what he thinks. Larry seems to be looking for sound bite answers.
Its most lilely larry hasnt got enough air time to listen to marlon talk for as long as everyone would like. i could most definatly listen to him all day but cnn had a deadline im sure!
Lighten up on Larry, he does the best he knows how. He's had his job a long time, he must be doing something right. Did it ever occur to anyone that perhaps his style of interviewing, despite the interrupting, makes the interview a bit more spontaneous and more like natural conversation?? Do we all speak to one another with absolute attention and let everyone finish their sentences? No. If he was such an a**hole, not many people would have ever agreed to be on his show.
its more honesty than u will get out of an actor today, it might seem that hes talking rubbish, but i can relate, he sounds like someone that is bipolar
For the people saying Larry isnt allowing Brando to finish his sentences........I have been watching Larry King on and off for years and he NEVER lets anyone finish their sentences. Thats just Larry being Larry.
BRANDO IS A VERY VERY UGLY OLD MAN ..HIS SELFCENTEREDNESS PATHOLOGICALLY PHYSICALLY MANIFEST IT SELF ON HIS ASS HIS FAT AND UGLY EXISTENCE ...I AM HAPPY TO SEE THAT ASHOLES FINAL DAY APPERANCE AFTER HE INFLUENCED MANY KIDS OF MY TIMES IN SUCH NEGATIVE WAYS.A PERFECT AMERICAN WANNA BE A NOWHEREMAN MR NOBODY
Its crazy how towards the end, he quickly demonstrates his brilliant ability to mimic people. Its almost as if you see him getting into character right before your eyes.
All of Brando's interviews are interesting, this one done later in life when he's more candid and reflecting on his life. Check out the interview with Dick Cavett from 1973. Too bad they couldn't edit out the long commercials.
4:30 - holy shit, my shrink who is Jewish says the same kind of shit it struck a familiar string in me when she does something she makes an excuse exactly like that like a fucking Haiku poem or some shit
@shnozwoman I noticed that too and it's really disrespectful. He doesnt seem demanding at all, but the one thing he asked at the very beginning of this was to not tape his legs and feet and its all they have been doing since the moment he mentioned it!! jerks!
Anyone see the SNL skit they did of this interview? I think it was John Travolta playing Brando and he kept putting his feet in Larry's face....pretty funny!
Oh goddamnit! Larry interviews himself not Brando! He wont let him answer, EVER!! fair enough Brando gets sidetracked from time to time, but I don't think there's a entire thought he's been able to finish cause of King's interruptions!! Pisses me off!
Yea Larry is on such an ego trip. Funny though how Mr. Brando mocks him, and makes so much fun of Larry with his hair, eyebrows, and the way he turns the interview around and poses questions back at Larry. And all those compliments he gives him at the beginning I think are underhanded.
i agree, and this is the problem with many interviewers. they dont let the thing breathe, and let the conversation flow correctly. they are too often in their own minds, and not stepping outsides themselves to see the broad scope of the conversation. brando starts saying something interesting, and he is cut off mid thought. i couldnt agree more with what you said dawn.
@FetishDawn I understand your frustration but Brando really does not like to be interviewed and if you go through a number of interviews he is more open and communicative here than in many other places. You want to see frustration watch the Dick Cavet <- spelling? show. I think Brando is doing a nice job of being fairly candid here.
The difference between his "father" voice and his usual voice is quite astonishing, if only because it shows that the intonation he used, mocked as it was, was choice rather than necessity.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Brando can't stay on topic for shit! He maybe smart in some cases but he's a mess of miscellaneous facts. No structure. He should have graduated high school. His whole life was a fuckin mess...not to mention have his children.
Marlon is conversing like normal people would who dont have an angle. Larry is selling and trying to do his job by keeping it a formal interview to fit between commercials.
Marlon would have been great for an interview "at the actors studio" where it would not be packed within a certain time frame and could be an actual conversation without worry of ads.
The way Brando is able to change his voice at 4:10, and when he speaks like a drunk in an earlier part of the interview, shows just how good he is. Alot of actors tried to be like him; Pacino, DeNiro, Caan, all those guys imitated him.
Any guy could mimic his own father, but the idea is that Brando is able to slip into many characters with ease, and make them memorable; The Godfather; A Streetcar Named Desire; On the Waterfront.
Larry tries to come up with someone and continually does not. Marlon should have slapped him early on. DUH!!
King tries to sound smart but falls flat on his ass. And, people think it is great to be interviewed by King-like this is some honor-get real-a jew interviewer-interviewing because he is a jew that's all folks.
Larry keeps stepping all over Marlon's feet, but Marlon's pretty gracious here. Maybe that's why he does'nt do interviews Larry, because talk show assholes don't know how to have a real conversation.
Oh, I did'nt know. I like how Marlon asks Larry to go to Mexico with him, like Larry is going to go whoring with him. I wondered why he let him into his home, I know he would'nt let anyone else in there. He made Connie Chung had to interview him outside.
He gave Larry some of his island (I think it was a present when Larry got married). Oh, I thought that he did the interview with Connie outside because it was nice weather!
No, he had her out there even after the sun had setted, in the dark interviewing him. I like the way he ends the interview too "put her there pal", and then he was out.
Why does Larry King keep interrupting him? Now he barely even opens his mouth t say anything useful and 11 years ago he decides to constantly interrupt and reinterpret a genius like Brando? Pisses me off.
Larry King is such a fucking idiot. i've watched this entire interview, he sucks. I can't believe this guy has any interview job, let alone on a major network. If he would JUST let Brando talk, this interview would be so much better. Unfortunately, Larry King only wants short, stupid answers instead of thoughtful answers, which brando tries to give.
He is probably sincere about his feeling's when he speaks of money and how we are depending on it too much. But without the money he got from his movies he wouldn't be able to buy the Island he wanted :P.
But u understand his point of view and what u saw the last years of his life was kinda the character he always loved to play in his movie whenever he got the chance. Witch is sad when u think about beeing one of the best who ever lived.
it seems to be a bit of both for this interview because sometimes larrys interuptions actually help get to the point but it wud be really interesting to have heard a more in depth answer from brando for other questions without larry cutting him off
Larry King is such an insufferable PHONY and Marlon Brando was gracious enough to put up with his constant interruptions. He was sweating because he couldn't manipulate Marlon or make him squirm with uncomfortable questions. Instead Brando turned the tables. King got owned. No match for Brando.
would've been fukin hilarious if instead of the scene they showed from tango in paris, they used the one where he asks her to shove her finger up his ass, and talks about fucking a pig. could you imagine that on cnn? haha
Brando would have announced his vision to feed the world. That vision came into my possession through a very strange chain of events and I published it in the book "A Prescription For Peace" on Amazon. He was an advocate for those that didn't have a voice and we should all take up where he left off. Michael Douglas Carlin
Brando is Great, Larger than life and Larry King is Pathetic, the lease Larry could have done was to let Brando go on and say what he had to. But its a blessing to see Brando Live in person.
very intelligent and thoughtful man. Very intelligent and thoughtful man. Why does Larry King keep cutting him off and goading him into questions when he's trying to speak about something that is on his heart? The poor man is being exploited.
He has only done a handful of interviews his entire career, he deserves the right to run-on if he wants to! :) If I were Larry, I would just sit in awe and let him go...At least let him finish his damn sentence! Marlon is trying to have a conversation between friends, and Larry is just trying to see what he can get out of Marlon to make this a landmark interview. I would have loved to talked 'til 4 in the morning with Marlon. He is beautiful in and out.
why should he be? Brando would still be Brando, if he wasnt a famous actor. He'd still be the same bloke, with the same views.
But larry king wouldnt of had him, had he not been a famous actor. So it comes down to supply and demand, and money and marketing. Bullshit like that.
Therfore, if someone like Marlon is being sold, and expected to be responsive he will (as should anyone) Not Be.
Yeah, there's a juxtaposition of opposites. We as viewers are only blessed by the existence of this interview. But at the same time, this interview came at the expense of Marlon bending down and meeting with corporate interests, marketing techniques, (Brando and King!--stuff like that).
I don't know really. I just wish we could let Brando know that we understand. At least some of us understand.
God, sorry to echo everyone else but King is truly a pain in the arse. I don't for the life of my understand why he's so big in America. He'd be better off talking to Parkinson, he lets people talk more. Whenever Brando gets interesting King puts his fucking size 12s in. "We've so much ground to cover", as though it's all about numbers of questions. Sheesh!
giant among men, dont like his hair style though why not keep a respectable bald head than combing it down when there is hardly anything to comb? maybe he likes the beatle look lol
"Unless we look inward we will not ever be able to clearly see outwards." The man was a genius, he inspires me to this day to seek individuality and personal and artistic freedom. I thank life for the beautiful people such as Marlon Brando.
I like it how he says everything is relative because sometimes I think about things that way. Well quite often actually. More people should too, it would make things easier for them. In other words BIG problems aren't THAT big. You can make better anything ;)
the guy interviewing looks like a prick

very intelligent and thoughtful man.

Brando's about eight hundred years older than Larry.

I find Larry King annoying, too; but he and Brando were friends so I guess he didn't annoy him.

Hits on Larry king but Brando is absolutley daft and banal.
I can't for the life of me figure how such a brilliant artist could be so evasive and non-responsive
Jaybird040 3 years ago
why should he be?

Sheesh!
