This was my favorite doom. Damn, I really need to get an N64 again, I always liked it better than the ps1 back in the day. also, I wouldn't want to play this game with modern controls, cross hairs, jumping. It simply wouldn't be the same game. Doom has an unmistakable style and feel and thats what I love about it. sometimes less is more. and in doom64's case less is a WHOLE lot more. Just a class game all around.
The only complaint I have with Doom 64 is the N64 controller. Man that thing is weird to hold when you need one hand on the d-pad and one on the joystick.
quake 2 (97) & unreal (99) were 2 of the new game engines along with the modified quake engine of halflife (98) that really made free look aiming feel smooth & easy enough not to have to think off the controls.
name a console game that had great fps free look controls before the playstation dual shock controllers release in 1997.
golden eye in, its 97, so no!!
remember europe & a lot of the world didnt get the n64 till march 1997 although it was release in japan in 96.
@cant1rac it was console tech not even released to have the possiblity of true fluid free look first person in game control when doom 64 was released.
the revolutinary for its day n64 controller was brand spanking new and this guy is calling it the game old tech antiquated control system retro and old for 1997.
@mkultraWUD there is also the fact this was a doom game, and doom really wasnt that old, ultimate doom was in 95 final doom was 96 & doom 64 was in 97.
& was a significant upgrade to the previous years release.
still trying to keep true to the spirit of the series
quake (96) as standard had a look up down, swim up & down keys (can be upgraded) duke nukem 3d's free look was poor (i use eduke which improves it considerably).
the charge this game was retro for early 97 is just laughable
really i think doom 64 got it right, i can remember the duke nukem 3d (96) aiming system was crap, you worked round it got use to it.
anyone that wants to play it now on pc should download eduke since it fixes the free look & other niggles of the original.
on consoles duke never real worked.
free look on a console involved a button to look up and another for down, trying 2 jump, strafe and move at the same time and shoot while keeping sight of what you were trying to shoot was a true fun killer
this was an early game launch, and all off the fps on the n64 having only 1 analogue stick are generally slower to move and aim, due to the controller limitations (its why all consoles since the dreamcast have all had 2)
so it makes it a better faster and more accurate experience, rather than searching the sky while moving trying to bring your characters gun back down to aim.
dont get me wrong you get use to it and goldeneye is great on it and it was better than any controller at the time
think the comments about its control system is just a little idiotic, anyone that thinks it was old tech in 97 wasnt old enough to understand how to wipe their ass.
or has a rather odd memory
the sega saturn didnt have analoge controllers neither did the ps1at this point and all consoles apart from the n64 had to wait till the dreamcast and playstation putting analoge sticks on their controlers to make it usable
really its a retarded point dramatically overplayed right through this whole review
If I had known that this wasn't just a port of the original, I would totally have played this back in the day. I was weened on demon blood and space marines.
@xenoranger79 wouldnt be hard there was 4 years difference, through the biggest tech revolution probably in computer history including the 3d graphics card revolution, that hadn't yet kicked off when the original doom engine was created.
the quake engine was the first able to use a 3d card but for the most part it didnt in 1996
@f8j3jn It's pretty hard to be one of the best Doom ports when it's not a Doom port at all. Doom 64 is a completely new set of levels from the original Doom. It's a completely different game, not a port.
I never played it, but having played the original Doom & Doom 2 to death including a million mods, I never could quite find the look of D64 "right." The redesigns aren't bad, but they aged more poorly than their counterparts I think; but it could just be the fact of which ones I saw first sticking with me.
Still, I'd love to get a PC port of this going sometime to try it, just as a Doom fanatic.
Actually, Doom 64 isn't so stubborn with its control scheme at all. If you had crosshairs and could aim like you could in other FPS games - that is, if Doom was like every other FPS game - it wouldn't be Doom. Doom never needed any of that. For a lot of fans, Doom's simplicity and style makes it much more satisfying and sets it apart, even today, and that includes the jerky animations, which for many older gamers will always have a more satisfying "crunch" than the 3D ragdoll effects today.
@HaganeSteel Yeah, there's something about the gun mechanics in doom that make me wanna go FUCK YEAH everytime I kill someone. I don't get that from most games unless I'm using a shotgun in cowdoody
Okay review, but you didn't mention the multiplayer function that was removed at the last minute, the new weapon (which you showed being fired several times), the removal of several enemies due to memory limitation, and the improved engine which allowed for level designs not possible in the original Doom/Doom 2 (such as suspended bridges, cat walks, spiraling stairs, etc.)
Why does this reviewer make it sound like being old school and classic is a bad thing? Doom 64 is doing it's own thing. OF COOOURSE it is not trying to be a COD clone, because it is a hardcore FPS and it was released before the easy ass COD series.
This games is really creeps especially if you play it through a home theatre system with headphones and It sounds that you are in hell it helps if you turn off the lights in the room that you are in :)
Jesus.. I've fond memories playing Doom64 so all I wanted was to enjoy this review but it's impossible! Is there a reason WHY this "mini-mark" cannot at least try to talk in a natural, calm tone. Mark doesn't sound fake so maybe he can teach this kid not to force every other word? Arghh.. and WHY is he shouting into the mic so often!? You're giving CGR a bad name kid sort it out please
I didn't like the SFX ported from the PlayStation version. If there's something the PS ports of DOOM had and I did not like, was the remastered SFX, I prefer the old sounds from the original PC/Jaguar ports.
As for the game, I had it and it was a giant leap forward, really beautiful, and also those enemy designs, which were the cornerstone for the DOOM 3 character designs.
@zombiekicker What the hell? Yeah, while you're at it, in Weird Al's words, "Stick your head in a microwave, and get yourself a tan... DARE TO BE STUUUUPPIIIIID"
Invincibility? Really, come on, you can do better than that.
@aidenrayner999 doom on the playstation 1 and doom 64 are completely different games, the ps1 game was a port of the first doom, doom 64 was a sequel/spinoff.
@janmansde3dede In 1994, Jaguar Doom supported multiplayer by linking two systems (plus two game copies) together with a cable. Ditto for Playstation Doom in 1995. SNES Doom could do something similar using a proprietary modem.
I guess one could say that split-screen shooters like Goldeneye halved the cost of console FPS deathmatches.
To be honest, the dated controls don't bother me that much. I mean Due Nukem 3D is just as bad (kinda) and its (almost) as beloved. Heck it got an updated remake for 360.
Personally, Doom works great on hardware with limited controls. The homebrew port of Doom for the PSP was great and played great.
As a lover of old school Doom, I fucking loved this game.I loved the updated graphics and the lighting. It was awesome. God Bless Doom. My first video game
Doom was the freaking game back in the day, that had me actually build a PC just to be able to play it proper, instead of buying one, and Doom64 gave the series a nice little face lift, also had doom for the 32X which was ok, but the music sucked, and so did the ending, like it was rushed, but truly nothing beats doom on a PC, with a keyboard, and mouse, with Bill Gates holding a shot gun, promoting the game for Windows. :)
i remember this game I beat it XD XD really hard game sometimes, sometimes scary XD Try Reviewing DOOM 3 for the original X-box!!!!! XD XD i did a review of this series called DOOM TIME XD
Doom 64 sort of reminds me of Serious Sam in a way. Both games are criticized for being dated, but they get away with it due to their intended old-school appeal.
Are you kidding? Like this, for example--you can't even aim up or down. Black Ops is the culmination of 20 years of evolution in the FPS genre. Goldeneye and Half Life had garbage multiplayer, Perfect Dark had great weapon selection but no online capability, and stupid AI that could flat out cheat when it felt like it, and Halo 1 had too few weapons and used ethernet for online gaming. FPS games from Halo2/COD1--on are easily FAR superior to their predecessors.
Lol he gets hit with almost every bullet in the game :P

@mkultraWUD turok is a fine game, 97 was a year of revolution in console games because of the n64 controler.
consule free look fps were very poor before the n64 (europe 97)
any game that handled it well in 97 were revolutionary.
the games that didnt definetly were not retro for the era as this uneducated reviewer suggests every few seconds over and over again,

I play Co-op Doom on Xbox Live.
So much more fun than newer multiplayer shooters. Why have an M16 when you can have the BFG 9000?

Doom 64 sort of reminds me of Serious Sam in a way. Both games are criticized for being dated, but they get away with it due to their intended old-school appeal.

@LamentOfInnocence1 ?
