Good job dude, you would think anyone who has the balls to post a video saying "how to play Blitzkrieg Bop" would get the rudimentary knowledge correct (Barre chords, downstrokes). A little while ago I cae across a kid who posted a video with that title who proudly displayed his power chord ability, so I posted a coment politely telling him that was for metal, not Ramones. Then I came across a grown man (an "expert") who said to "use a lot of alternate picking"! I was a bit ruder to him, lol.
@LetsGoMetsGo33 Arrrgh ! Je sais jouer tous les morceaux des Ramones avec les "power chords" parce que j'ai appris sur des tablatures en ligne. Quelqu'un peut me dire où je peux apprendre ces morceaux en accords barrés ?
@SpaceAce2704 Hows it goin Frenchy? I had to use Google translator to catch what you wrote. So, you're on the right video. Woody lays it out there, how to play barre chords. Try to learn to play the "A" and "D" barre chords from this video. If you can get it down, then you don't need new tabs, just read the ones you have, but substitute these newly learned chords for the power chords. 95% of Ramones guitar is a matter of playing these 2 shapes up and down the guitar neck.
nice video man! Its good to see other people that love the ramones! check out my channel for some cool ramones cover videos that I did. Rock on dude!!
BRAVO!!!! WELL DONE!!! I'm so tired of seeing and hearing the majority of guitar players, playing these songs wrong. Ive never understood why people choose to take an already simple song and try to play them in what they believe to be a more simple style, while making the song sound like crap. GREAT JOB!
Thanks a lot! That was exactly the reason why I made this tutorial. I have played with some very skilled guitar players (way better than me) but no one could do a decent version of this song;)
@sleeler69 And that includes green day guitarist joe...Not trying to insult the guy or his fans here. That's not my point. My point is simple. He did a Ramones cover and blew it big time.If you're going to do a cover/tribute.Do it right or don't do it.Period....Woody kicks ass.
@woodyamsterdam How come so many people play the power chords over the barre chords, when the latter is the one that sounds (and is) right? Are the power chords just stripped down barre chords? I was first taught to play this song with only power chords, but with the option to make them barre chords. So I'm wondering why are there two "options" to play a simple song that would only combine the two.
Many people are taking the easy way and choose for power chords which are indeed stripped down barre chords. Mastering barre chords is somewhat more difficult but in the end they make a song easier to play -you're faster and more precise- and they sound better. At least for Ramones and other old school punk. Power chords are probably the better choice for hardcore and metal.
thank you very much ! i've been playing only power chords but with the bar chords it makes much more sense!but please, tell me how much strings you have to hit at the bar chords, cuz if i hit all 6 it sounds kinda messy...
You're welcome. In a 6th string barre chord I usually hit the top 4 strings and in a 5th string barre the 5th, 4th, 3rd and 2nd string. (give or take...)
Maybe the strings are too high above the neck because it shouldn't take a lot of force to fret the strings. You can work your way around by using the same shape for your middle, ring finger and pinky as for the 6th string barre, but then all fingers one string down. be careful only to strum the A, D and G string, otherwise you'll be playing a minor chord! But maybe your guitar only needs a good setup.
This is great, really enjoyed it and definately needed to be done, especially by someone who knows what they're talking about (i've seen a few here on youtube, haha)
btw, i've said this before, you speak english better than some english people.
Thanks! But you don't want to see the outtakes hahaha! Quite a nerve wrecking experience. I wanted to do a barre chords tutorial for about a week now, but every time something comes in between. Hopefully next week.
Thanks for the tutorial Woody! I've had my guitar now for about three weeks but have had to take my amp back twice to be worked on so I haven't been practicing as much as I'd like. After watching your tutorial I now see all the mistakes I've been making with bar chords. I've fixed those mistakes and can't wait to plug in again to hear the results. Also can't wait for a tutorial from you on just bar chords!
@woodyamsterdam when you do barre chord tutorial could also talk about stamina, and kind of training we should do, cause when I play barre chords, the flesh under the thumb starts cramping. Really painful
If your thumb starts cramping, then you squeeze too hard. Possibly your strings are set too high or you just need to relax. If your guitar is setup well, it shouldn't require a lot of force to grab the barre chords.
Try to lower your strings as close as possible to the neck without causing string buzz.
i feel an extreme pain on my index finger. Could you tell me how you avoid the pain of draging you index across the fret or are you even dragging your index when switching chords
You can not avoid that in the beginning, but after a few weeks your fingers will get used to it and the pain will go away. If I haven't played for a couple of weeks (vacation) I have to go through the same process again.
Hard to explain in a few words, but it's a combination of strumming technique, amp settings and of course the guitar. I reckon an important factor is to be able to change chords fast, without breaks. I'll show you in a next tutorial.
excellent tutorial martin... you make it seem easy enough so even someone at my age might pick up a guitar and try to learn it.. but i know it's not that easy at all! and you have a good idea with these tutorials, everyone can benefit from them!
That's correct. If I play Ramones I usually only strum the top 4 or 5 strings of the chord because it's fits the sound better. There are exceptions though, and that is what I meant when I said that a barre chord gives you much more tonal options than a powerchord.
