  • I have to agree with a few posters - She is obviously a very talented ventriloquist. Although, this might not have been the best forum for that kind of art. I really felt uncomfortable for her in a few scenes and it took something away from that particular episode in my opinion.

  • bill bailey is wearing a naruto shirt? you what? my brain just melted out of one ear

  • BILL BAIlEYS SHIRT!

  • I'm really surprised at all the hate for Nina in the comments. I honestly didn't think that she was that bad. I really feel like I was watching a different show to everyone else!

  • Surely the best thing about being a ventriloquist is that you can laugh at your own jokes without seeming arrogant!

Props for Stephen for treating Granny as a sentient being.

  • Love, love, love Qi. Also love, love HIGNFY. Anyone heard if anyone's being brave enough to upload it yet?!

  • Good try, but adding a ventriloquist to a successful tried and tested format just didn't work... :/

  • hmmm...I like Nina Conti, but there are two comedy formats that rarely work on a panel show: One-Liner stand ups and Ventriloquism. Whenever a comedian uses either, everyone has to stop for their bit. It detracts from the flow of the show

  • I'll call this one a noble failure. The idea of having a ventriloquist on QI is just interesting enough to have been worth trying. Unfortunately, the chemistry just didn't work. Never heard of her before, but Nina seems perfectly likable and she made me laugh more than a number of one-off guests in the show's history. So there's that. But if they invite her back, she oughta lose the puppet.

  • @kriswright The thing about ventriloquists is they rarely can do improv. They almost always follow a skit that they've spent months perfecting.

  • @Ahnyks That's true. But I also think Nina did alright for herself here. While I wouldn't bet money that she's the next Sandi Toksvig, it's also true that a lot of classic QI panelists have relatively low-key first appearances. I guess my opinion is that ventriloquism doesn't seem to work with the format, but Nina seemed witty/interesting enough that, if QI wanted to give her one more shot without the puppet, I'd be happy to see it. (Assuming she'd even want to perform that way.)

  • 10:25

    An excellent puppet

  • can someone remove her from the video and give the doll to her daughter

  • I see Bill is a Nauto fan hehe

  • Alan is pro at the nobody knows sign game.

  • Yeah, let's not have a ventriloquist on the show ever again, shall we?

  • There is a flying car... At least top gear said so last season... :D

  • @emmamariewhiting wasn't that only a prototype? Sounds like this one actually worked a few times before he crashed...

  • @Hedghog6666 i have no idea, all i know is that they said there was "a new flying car" on top gear last seasonXD

  • Well, Stephen saying 'pussy hound' made it worth watching.

  • God this is a bad episode, get rid of that damn ventriloquist. Not funny, the voice is exactly the same, the material isn't even slightly funny.

  • @SeanACampbell I've seen Nina Conti's live show, and it was absolutely brilliant. I'll agree it didn't translate terribly well to the QI format, but she got a couple of good gags in, and it wasn't as bad as ruby wax a couple of years ago.

  • I couldn't wait for the XL, and now I'm kind of glad I didn't. If not for Sean Lock despite a cold, there'd be almost no laughs in this one at all.

  • Comment removed

  • Jeff Dunham is the only ventriloquilonist I can watch

  • Ventriloquism is the lowest form of wit.

  • would it not have been better, like all previous special guests, to have the performer on the show and not the character? one of the least enjoyable episodes to date....

  • never have i seen an episode so cringeworthy... fucking ventriloquism gets old after about a minute, always, no exception. anyone who says otherwise has no sense of humour. i have spoken.

  • @Azuresong Ironically, your lips weren't moving.

  • @singrdave That's not irony. It's just a coincidence.

  • @singrdave i am actually a ventriloquist dummy irl

  • This was actually an alright episode - ventriloquism's not really my thing, but it's tolerable, and Nina seems sweet. I love the way whenever Davis gets a Nobody Knows right Fry is so pleased and says 'You're good at that'.

  • :( why! its difficult to watch.. I can barely stand it and I was looking forward to this so much...

  • Too much puppet shenanigans took up too much time.

  • Not the best episode i agree.

  • maybe it's just me, maybe I burnt myself out marathoning and watching reruns, but maybe it's not - anyone else feel like this season hasn't been as fun as previous ones?

  • QI is supposed to be clever people being clever, and a clever person never needs a prop to be clever...

Overall, fairly bearable (though she would have been much better alone, I'm sure). Not looking forward to the XL, as I'm sure it will include a lot of puppet one-liners that got cut out. Oh well, Locke and Bailey, so who am I to complain?

  • @dorsk188 I won't stand by and listen to this anti-prop hate speech! there's clever and not clever - props have nothing to do with it!

she just happened to be not clever :p

  • @bossmonkeykj I won't stand by and listen to you, damned prop apologist! I challenge you to a duel without pistols on the morrow!

  • How come the only funny women on QI is Jo Brand?

  • @lolzoners Saying Jo Brand is funny is a bit of a stretch. All she does is make shit one liners about her husband.

  • @contrivedworld Or about herself being fat.

  • I don't understand the comments either, I enjoyed this episode and the part where everyone had puppets (and Bill Bailey's antics!) was brilliant.

  • That joke about the end about the wheel, didn't someone once make a similar joke on an earlier episode of this show?

  • @MikeEmery9 yeah, I think it was rich hall

  • jesus how fucking awkward is this

  • That was a bit of a let down. I have never felt that way about a QI episode before.

  • I spewed tea all over my monitor when Stephen said "pussy hound".

  • Not enjoying this series as much as I hoped I would...

  • YES!! Lock!!

  • Ventriloquists should be illegal.

  • he just bought the shirt from uniqlo

  • i love bill bailey but i hate naruto. at least i can hope he enjoys other "good" animes

  • @FilthyMedia

    like elfen lied?

but naruto isn't bad, it's just gone on to long (in my opinion).

  • @homerfromhelI elfen lied isn't that great either. also tbh i never liked naruto. not even pre shippuden like most people. just way too overrated imo. i'm talking about animes like monster, code geass or even the recent steins gate.

  • @FilthyMedia He did wear a Dragonball Z shirt in one episode. Though I guess your opinion can very on whether that's "good" or not.

  • @BioYuGi DBZ is great when it's good and very shit when it's bad.

  • @FilthyMedia I basically used to watch naruto for the fights animated by norio matsumoto (the guy who animated the naruto vs sasuke fight). otherwise, it's basically a less intolerable dbz. I haven't run across many people who are into the shows I enjoyed, though - mushishi or bunny drop, anyone? actually, I'm anticipating the 3rd rebuild of evangelion movie...

  • @bossmonkeykj mushishi is a masterpiece. absolutely incredible. especially impressive considering i usually don't love episodic series. also usagi drop was the sweetest slice of life i have seen for some time. also evangelion is of course awesome. even though shinji does annoy me

  • @FilthyMedia haha great to find a kindred spirit. Shinji never bothered me, but I can see why he would. he does seem to have a bit more spine in the rebuild though, so that's good to see.

  • @bossmonkeykj ya i've noticed that. funny how we started talking about anime on a QI video

  • Is Bill Bailey a Naruto fan? :D

  • Can't wait for WILTY! :)

  • Are my eyes deceiving me? O.o Naruto !! ???

  • Hey Bill, stop beating up chef excellence, he's cool.

  • Glad to see I'm not the only one who couldn't even finish watching this episode due to the awkwardness of the ventriloquism. By all means have Nina back on the show, just please leave the dummy behind.

  • I am a die hard QI fan but this season has kinda sucked so far and this ventriloquist chick is terrible. Worst episode ever.

  • If they were going to get a ventriloquist, they should have gotten David Strassman

  • Bill Bailey always wears the most out of place shirts that usual have an anime on it.

  • such an awkward episode cause of the ventriloquist

  • I'm very sorry, but the puppet was just not funny at all :( Glad to see Bill though!

  • Nina looks like Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

  • So i've watched this episode twice now, and at first I was like "GWAH! This is the worst episode EVAR!!" Then I was reminded of the Ruby Wax episode. And then I gave the ventriloquist a chance.... And she kind of grew on me. I don't want her back, but she wasn't awful (as a guest, not as a ventriloquist... she's an awful ventriloquist).

  • yay, bill bailey. finally.

  • @Kujirudo There's a difference between being a hater and just seeing when something is done badly. Nina is a bad ventrilloquist. Here lips move, the voice of the puppet is exactly the same as her own voice and her material isn't funny. It's just another old lady saying rude things. It was just painful to watch. If your going to use a gimmick that has been used so many times before you have to be either incredibly good at it or do something totally original. She failed on both counts.

  • I knew there was something wrong when I saw that there were five dislikes.

The minute I saw the puppet, I understood.

  • The ventriloquist was fine and I have the feeling as if the QI guests have had more fun in this episode than in any of the previous ones (maybe excluding the Parthenon one, etc.)

  • Thank you for uploading!

  • poor bill

  • Bill! Naruto shirt! 8D

When the going gets tough, the tough imagine Bill as a ninja and manage to survive.

  • bills puppet was funnier than gran...

  • Bills puppet was funnier than gran...

  • Good Dawrin, let that ventriloquist feature be a one-off.

  • Don't change a winning team. A new ruby wax episode as far as I'm concerned. Luckily Sean and Bill manage to save something from the wreck

  • +100 points for NAruto Shirt!

  • I'm kind of glad I read the comments before I watched this episode. Although at first they made me not want to watch it at all, when I did I was pleasantly surprised by how entertaining it was.

Reading all the comments made it sound like another Ruby Wax train-wreck. But all in all Nina was good. I'm glad because I always found her stand up refreshingly original, ventriloquist-wise.

  • Awesome shirt on Bill Bailey! XD

  • You know, all the comments of why people didn't like Nina Conti was just because she's a ventriloquist and she has a puppet, and there's no other reason.

She has a rare talent; she was funny (hey, that Ryanair joke was good timing); and she didn't overdo it (as I've seen with many ventriloquists). Honestly: grow up people, and leave behind whatever shadow you had about puppets in your childhood years.

  • Comment removed

  • @pinkriffic um no its because her act isnt funny, if she was just her being herself it would probably be fine

  • If it was because of the" throwing your voice" part, they could have had Rob Brydon and his man trapped in a box.

  • Comment removed

  • HOLY SHIT.

    BILL'S WEARING A NARUTO SHIRT! :D

  • How the hell could they let that creepy puppet on the show. Ugh.

  • is the puppet necessary?

  • Oh for fark's sake....someone get rid of the ventriloquist! There is a reason that profession is nearly extinct.

  • I fucking hate ventriloquist!!!

  • I really love how Sean can use pity for laughs, he really can pull emotion into comedy, he did that on graham norton and on an earlier episode of QI about dolphins

  • MUST. RESIST. AND. WAIT. FOR. XL!

  • @xsingsthesorrow why? cant u watch both?

  • @MerelMystery lol yeah sometimes I do but it's easier to just watch XL in one go

  • @xsingsthesorrow but I guess you remember more when you watch certain parts twice ;)

  • Just not quite feeling the woman i'm afraid...

  • Naruto t-shirt. My god.. *takes off glasses*

  • has anyone noticed bill bailey is wearing a naruto shirt?

  • I wish I didn't hate ventriloquists so much. :/

  • by god, this woman was annoying...

  • +1 for a woman panel member, but -1 for her being a ventriloquist...

  • @t12478

-1 for giving a shit about them being a male or female

  • Yeah Alan gets another nobody knows... hes gotten them all!!!!

  • anybody else notice bill bailey is wearin a naruto shirt.

  • Was he a Pussyhound..... OMG Stephen ... well that's something I learned on Qi tonight......

  • When I saw the lineup whilst watching last night my reaction was:

    :S -> :D -> :D -> :D

Not keen on the puppet as it did not fit the format well.

  • One dummy too many.

  • Nina should've brought Monk...

  • Bill has the coolest T-shirts. :D

  • they should have had jeff dunham that would have rocked

  • Bill is wearing.. a naruto shirt... AWESOME!

  • more unbearable than the Vanessa Feltz episode of buzzcocks v.v

  • I like ventriloquism in general, but she's not that funny. It actually got a bit awkward.

  • i hate that i know this but Alan's puppet is a Melissa & Doug puppet. probably ran bout 10 pounds

  • yeah wow... First episode I won't be watching the XL...

  • Bill Bailey and Sean Lock, this had so much potential. Ventriloquist was a vortex of laughter.

  • Wow, Bill and Sean look mega pissed and it's less than 1 minute in!!

  • worst episode ever?

  • i like weird, i liked the ventriloquist

  • Urgh.... the awkward silences when she was trying to be funny... bad idea

  • to be fair, ventriloquist act has a lot of limitations. On a quiz show, I'd say that women did her best.....

  • Replace the stand-up with dara o briain or David michell and this would be perfect

  • The ventriloquist doesn't really work with the format.

  • It's not so much that having a ventriloquist was a bad idea.

Rather, this one just didn't quite fit QI's format. I bet that she has a decent standup act, but QI needs comedians who are a) quick on their feet and b) don't need to build up their act.

For b), I mean that the ventriloquist and puppet would need obviously distinct voices/personalities.

I know I may get flamed for this, but I just felt that the "granny" voice simply didn't fit the character at all.

  • Nina made this episode a bit awkward, Im sures she is a great ventriloquist but its just made it a bit wierd

  • As if the female comedians on this show don't get ENOUGH bashing....ARGH!! Why? WHY? WHY?

  • @CorianderCivar Tsk tsk, the female comedians that have been on this show aren't CAPABLE of getting enough bashing.

  • @CorianderCivar I take that back! Jo Brand (SP?) is OK. And I want to marry Sue Perkins.

  • yeah, not feeling the whole puppet thing. creates a really weird atmosphere.

  • Euggh, the ventriloquist was a dreadful idea. I'm only continuing to watch, clinging onto the hope that Sean and Bill will rescue the episode.

  • So much hate for Nina here in the comments... I mean, I know she wasn't amazing, but she wasn't bad, and hardly the worst they've had on the show.

  • @Preeemo Honestly I cant think of anyone worse they've had on. They have had unfunny people before, but at least they had the good sense to let the other guests cover for them and not try to hog all the airtime. This was the 30 min cut, I dread to think what the XL or raw footage was like.

  • Love Bill's Naruto shirt :)

  • fuck me bill bailey is wearing a Naruto shirt also hes worn a Dragonball shirt in a earlier series...Badass

  • Whose idea was it to invite a VENTRILOQUIST???

    Idiot should be fired.

I thought they were very careful with the kind of people who were guests on QI?

  • Nope, not going to watch this one. Not a fan of puppets. Oh well, next week I suppose... felt like a waste of a good panel though.

  • Nina, I bet she's a sweet lady, but never again on QI. I almost couldn't watch it, it was that painful.

  • Made my week.

    THANK YOU!

  • This episode could of been so much better without the ventriloquist. You could tell Sean, Bill and Alan were struggling to work with Nina. I felt they could of talked of a lot more useful inventions than what they discussed. Thankfully the regular guys made it funny, dont know who thought having the ventriloquist there would be a good idea!

    Sean Lock :D

    Bill Bailey :D

    Alan Davies :D

    Nina the Ventriloquist....... :(

  • Sitting here watching QI like always and all of a sudden I heard Stephen say "pussy hound" and boy did I lose it.

  • Lot of aggression towards the ventriloquist...I thought she was sweet, and the dummy actually reminded me of my granny. I don't normally like ventriloquists, but she was great :D

  • This would have been a good episode but it was completely ruined by the shit ventriloquist. Great guests except that shit ventriloquist.

  • Actually, I saw Nina at the Just for Laughs Festival here in Montreal and she was very good. But that was on a stage. Performing ventriloquism on a quiz show is probably not the best way to do it. She would have done better without the dummy... and I don't mean Allan!

  • @spacecowboy5000 Was it at the show hosted by Adam Hills? Cause I saw her there as well, and I totally agree with your comment, she was good on stage but here would have done better without the dummy, or if she, like the others, only used it for one part of the show, instead of all.

  • @spacecowboy5000 Alan is such a fucking dunce.

  • @ozipk Not sure if your comment is meant or not but he's very intelligent. He adopts this 'dunce' persona for the show. Without which, the programme would not be the same.

  • @ozipk If you watch the making QI you'll see that they pay Allan to be a dunce. He plays stupid so that we are entertained. And to give people like Johnny Vegas a bit of a chance.

  • ne one else notice Bill's naruto shirt? wtf?

  • 19:22 has got to be one of the funniest things Alan has ever said.

  • Nina Conti bless you for trying but I do think the monkey would've been a better puppet.

  • @NiPaPianista OMG - you mean she has more of them ?!!!

  • This was a nice change, I quite like the idea of having a ventriloquist on the show as a one or two time thing.

  • Ventriloquists kinda weird me out, but I always love the episodes when Bill Bailey is on & they get props.

  • Awesomely quick upload! Thanks!!

  • as upset as I am by the fact that they have a ventriloquist on, I am even more upset by the fact that she is a shitty ventriloquist. I can totally see her lips moving.

  • The worst invention tonight was the granny dummy and her human - awful

    Alan won by miles

  • I havent watched this yet, but I saw a woman with a puppet and Im both curious and horrified at the thought

  • i know i shouldnt watch this b4 the XL comes out...

but i just cant help it!

  • LOL! my face hurts from laughing, especially when the guys tried to give ventriloquism a go!

  • Now THIS is some good QI
