That scream... Heart-wrenching. Yet another example of Maurice LaMarche's incredible voice acting talent.

IIRC the first time I saw this episode as a kid, there was a thunderstorm and the local station went out just before Egon revealed himself as a "ghost" to the team. I freaked out, thinking my favorite character was dead forever! It was quite some time before that episode aired again and I could find out how the story was resolved. Back then there wasn't an Internet to turn to for answers.

Granted, Egon wasn't technically "dead" of course, but this was really pushing it.

It was bone-chilling.

actually Dic made RGB. Columbia just had the rights to it because they made the movies. ABC (owned by Disney) paid for the network episodes to be made. Because of this, once the show was a hit ABC demanded the changes that were made to the show (new janine, brighter colors, more slimer).

ALTHOUGH---I still can't believe Captain Planet actually had a teenager DIE from drug abuse right on camera. And that was 1990! You NEVER saw anything like that on kids' shows back then. As a matter of fact, you don't see anything like that today, either. I'm still amazed they were allowed to that. I guess an exception was made because they figured the anti-drug message was important enough to bend the rules.

I'll tell you this much---I sure never forgot that scene.

@Marbles471 After Bravestarr destroyed the drug making facility, he then finds the body of the boy, his face wasen't shown, but the brilliant acting and writing was just enough to tell you that the boy died. I have that episode on DVD on the now out of print BCI release.

@Marbles471: actually, in 1992(?) they even did a cartoon named "Cartoon heroes against drugs". The main character(can't rember his name) is a teenaged boy smoking weed and steadily plumetting towards the harder stuff. In one of the final scenes, where the cartoons take the boy on a Scrooge-like trip to the future, the kid faces his future self lying on a scrub table, emaciated, trembling from withdrawal and a needle in hand. Talk about tough love and serious warning.

In the first draft Egon was suppose to die and the gang had to bring him back from the dead, but DiC rejected the idea.

Yeah. I suppose after all the hullaballo over Optimus Prime's death in The Transformers: The Movie they didn't want the same thing happening to them.

In the He-Man & the Masters of the Universe ep "The Problem With Power" He-Man was orignally going to actually kill someone, albiet accidentally, but they scrapped that idea.

Looking back on them I'm glad they did them the way they did as those are some of my favourite moments in cartoon history!

You know, I'll bet if this were being made today, they would have let him be dead. Well, it would depend on the network and the intended market, but I definitely think in some circmstances, they would have gone with that scenario.
