originally there was no difference, but i think with every progressive generation, pakistan is leaving the indo-subcontinent and its traditional version of islam to a more middle-eastern version. pakistan has undergone a very deliberate top-down process to separate itself from desi culture in the last few decades...this is my view as a hindu with interest in the sufi culture of the subcontinent
