I guess "skittish" would have been a better choice of words. However, "aggressive" is not altogether unfounded...Grammostola Rosea are considered the quintessential "beginner tarantula", and I've seen video of some MEAN fucking Rose Hairs. On the flip-side, I've seen video of people handling their pokies and OBT's. Sometimes you get an aggressive sp who is just chill.
My smithi never kicked hair....that's why I asked.
@lungfixer i have several grammostola rosea, a brachypelma auratum, brachypelma emilia, vagans, smithi, all my mexican tarantulas are calm and nice, compared to grammostola rosea is quite aggressive and nervous.
i'll be honest here, im arachnophobic (fear towards spiders and tarantulas) but your vidoes have me.... inspired to give a more neutral feeling towards spiders than rather be afraid of them.
good post! mine does not appear to have eaten for 3 months or so. getting worried now. no interest at all despite good conditions. mealworms, crickets, locusts-nothing:-( can anyone advise?
the temp is room temp + heat mat under 1 half of the enclosure. I do not have measuring devices for precise readings. Keep humidity by spraying inside. I have had her for a year and half and i would say she is fully grown. She was given to me so can't be sure of age and i don't think she has had a molt. She has no flick hairs left, bald and has been for some time. Spends much of her time burrowed under log. i have pics if you would like to c them. Thanks for replying.
evidently your not doing anything wrong obviously you have a water bowl for it right ? ermmm have you tryed this Spiders dont like to be heated from the bottom of the enclosure so you need to tape it to the back wall of the enclosurei can send you a pic of what it should look like if you want its a tiny change but i may be right in thinking that woull try anything ?? :)
i would say the same heat mat on the side of the enclosure as tarantulas burrow to keep cool not to get hotter
and dont freak out if she is moving around and looks a healthy size she might just be full sometimes they have phases where they build up to much food inside then dont eat for another few months so dont sweat
some people say dont mist a smithi cage and also a heat mat is not required . shes probably burrowing to get cool like someone below me said. I dont use a mat or a light and im from canada eh. our igloos get a little cold...
such a beauti one! I placed a special order on one

The August 2008 photo looks like she got pissed at something and kicked all the hairs off her abdomen. Is she aggressive?

Probably about to molt. If it doesn't want to eat, it won't. All you can do is wait.
