  • It's a grim reaper documentary XD

  • kid: OH GOD THAT ADVERTS TERRORFYING! Mom i've seen something awful on the tv. im going down to the swamp for a swim to unwind.

  • If anyone saw this because it was on the "Phantom of Death" review from Phantom Review, bless your heart!

  • Pleasance narrates like a boss.

  • That kid that saves the boy from drowning....early Kate Nash?

  • they should shows kids this now. but it would be too violent i guess. definately stopped me playing near water though.

  • Who played figure of Death, looming over children playing near a river? I mean it is a spooky for a public information film. Donald Pleasance is doing the voice. Who thought this up?

  • JIMMMMMY!!!!

....Oh wait, I'm at the wrong PSA!! hehe sorry.

I'm supposed to meet my friends near that substation where... oh you know what never mind. I think I will go swimming instead... .

  • Between this and "Children of the Stones", It's a wonder we didn't grow up terrified in the 1970's Britain.

  • Brilliant. They found a way to turn my favorite actor (Donald Pleasance) into a creepy stalker. Thank you Public Info!

  • is that Donald Pleasance??

    what is this even about??

  • @painlessissuicide

it is him, i only found out recently. and it's about not playing silly buggers near water. he did another (rather longer) public information film about not wandering about aimlessly if you're an escaped P.O.W. who's going blind.

  • @norristerse Pleasance actually was a POW

  • @painlessissuicide

    didn't know that. cheers.

  • nice cockney kids helping the lil mite - gawd bless yah!

  • @MrCamparisafari Really? God, I've wondered what he's said for years! It just sounded like complete jibberish!

  • Donald Pleasance. Great actor with audio erotica for a voice. R.I.P. Good sir...

  • I defy anyone to actually tell me what that kid said at 1:20. Never got that bit.

  • @OzzyMandez "Ergh, horrible thing!"

  • Listen to that perfect cockney accent at 1:04.

    Love it.

  • @Edgey1988 you just don't hear accents like that on TV anymore... not even on Eastenders.

  • Never mind scary, Mr Pleasance's voice is really sexy!

  • the kid with the london accent sounds like the boy ringo meets in a hard day's night

  • Donald Pleasance ruled SO FUCKING HARD

  • I would expect nothing less from Michael Myers' creator

  • WTFFFFFFFF?

  • Comment removed

  • Wow, the UK had creepy Public Service Adverts compared to the USA back then. The Crying Indian telling us not to litter was tame by comparison. Although the Crying Indian would have been sobbing at all the junk in that lake.

  • perfect place for an accident O_0

    that's sounds like a paradox

  • I'll be BACKBACkBAckBackback...

  • Why Loomis, why?

  • roy west

  • still creepy now.

  • Donald Pleasance: HARBINGER OF DEATH!

  • It was intimidating until: "Sensible children. I have no power over them." Then I couldn't help but smile.

  • "I'll be back." That alone should have had Dr. Loomis as the Terminator.

  • TMS! TMS!

  • I keep hearing that drum and bass remix beat off one of the other vids everytime i watch this now....

  • @kdreamland Drum n Bass remix?

  • Only a fool would ignore this!!!: Shackleton got ya",...

  • I remember this! ... but I don't? :S

(Acht, stupid childhood memories playing up on me - it's like when you come across an old toy that seems so familiar ...)

  • I remember as a kid, this scared the s*** out of me.

  • It's not about swimming or not being able to swim, morons: the north of England used to be filled with abandoned quarries and mines with steep sides, filled with stagnant water that hid horrible spiky hazards. If you fell in, it didn't matter how many swimming medals you had, you'd NEVER GET OUT.

  • @funktimusrhyme Couldn't of put it better myself. They still exist as well.

  • @funktimusrhyme Do we really care??? THIS ISN'T ENGLAND!!!!!!!!!! (thank goodness)

  • hahahah ponds were dodgy to play around when i was a nipper,a place called hobby wood i used to go to,i even hated getting my kecks or shoes all soily let alone playing on it.

  • Great. Donald Pleasence has a great voice for this.

  • why don't British people teach their children to swim? you live on freakin island for fucks sake!

  • @darknessofkrish why don't american people teach their children to stfu?

You live in a civilised country for fucks sake!

  • @Lol1Fag We were taught to swim though...

  • @darknessofkrish You watched the video and inferred that? Really? It doesn't mention anything about not being able to swim and even pictured a no swimming sign. Don't you think, perhaps, the ability to swim wasn't an issue.

  • @Smyshies just trying to be funny and troll a bit, really didn't mean it like that, on the one hand. On the other hand, I've never seen or heard something of this kind of problem, such as to warrant a PSA. What is the problem? How does this cause the death of children other than them just not being able to swim? Googled and found a neat Finnish rock band, but that's about it..

  • @darknessofkrish These aren't natural ponds or lakes. They're abandoned quarries that have been filled with stagnant water. Moreover there's also a lot of junk (seen in a shot in the video) left in these abandoned quarries/mines etc that you can't see from the surface. There are no shallow banks so if you fall it's immediately into deep water.

  • @darknessofkrish My brother once fell into such a lake. Narrowly missed a long jagged spear-type thing. It tore a hole in his top right near his abdomen. An inch to the right and he would have been impaled.

They've since been drained and made pretty again. Now we need one to explain that walking on frozen lakes is not a good idea. There are far too many stupid people about.

  • @Smyshies Holy hell, well that explains it, I guess those of us who have never seen those things have no idea what the issue is, that's scary as hell.

  • @darknessofkrish Yeah, sorry if I was sounding too incredulous and rude. At least I didn't randomly assume your nationality and told you to stfu! :)

  • Apparently none of these children knew how to swim.

  • you know what the most disturbing thing about this is? not the creepy hooded guy with his sinister voice, or the children dying over and over, but the realization that death comes so easily. it doesn't even take an idiot doing something completely stupid. everyone makes mistakes, and what's unnerving is that sometimes those casual mistakes are enough to take everything from you.

  • Why do you British always insist on freakin' me out!? First Pink Floyd, now this! Bloody 'ell!

  • That commercial actually gave me chills

  • Message of the PSA: Make sure your children actually know how to swim before you let them play around water.

  • This video is made of win :)

  • It's not the worst PCA I've ever seen, but I didn't expect it to be so... theatrical? (Not sure if that's the word I want to use). He sounds like a villain from some kids show, but I guess that makes sense if this is aimed towards children.

It's just when the video started with an ominous voice saying, "I am the spirit of dark and lonely water," I couldn't help but giggle a little.

  • Holy Shit!

The Terminator and The Grim Reaper are the same person!

  • The dark and lonely water EATS children!

  • "Oi! Luk! The's some'en in the WART-O!"

  • Used to creep me out when I was a kid!

  • I just pissed myself a little.

  • "Oi look, there's somebody in the WORT-A !!"

  • I'll be back!

  • no pufferfishish its a actor called donald plesance who played doctor loomis in halloween 1 and 2

  • Yeah.

    Someone else clarified that, thanks.

I do know who Donald Pleasence is funnily enough (note correct spelling of surname).

  • For some reason, I really love it when that one kid goes "Wa'er!" God I love accents. On the other hand, brrrrr. ;-;

  • This should be shown nowadays!

  • Is that Gabriel Woolf's voice? Sounds a bit like Sutekh from Dr Who: Pyramids of Mars.

  • The voice is of British actor Donald Pleasance

  • I never noticed but they do both sound really similar now that you mention it....

They should do an updated version of this with Sutekh luring children into quicksand.

  • This was always the best public info film ever made! And I'm glad that you've put it on without a watermark over it like another YouTube user has done, as if they own the rights to it or something! (they weren't even born when it was made!)

  • You don't have to worry about this sort of thing too much anymore, these days kids are safely staying indoors playing video games and growing fat instead.

  • Who needs horror films? This is essential Hallowe'en viewing!

  • ew, an old thing! XD

  • This predates that film...

  • It wouldn't surprise me if Terminator nicked the line from this ad. Donald Pleasance certainly says it better than arnie ever could :)

  • Why are there burned out cars and abandoned baby carriages everywhere? Were the seventies that bad in England?

  • No, it's to show what can be at the bottom of ponds for kids to run into or get their feet caught in. Stuff like that.

Basically, it's what people throw into a pond.

  • Yes, yes they were.

    :'(

  • : (

You all should've come over here to the States. We had nothing but drugs and sunshine, at least for the first half of the '70s.

  • 'Fraid so.

  • @tintintabulations

But yeh pretty much, winter of discontent and all that.

  • Hmm, seems to me that these British kids just need to learn to swim! Seriously though, I actually like the UK PSA's more than the ones they show here in the US; they are much much creepier and I think they get the point across better. Scare the shit outta your kids, people! It's the only way they have a shot at seeing adulthood! Plus the looks on thier faces are priceless :)

  • OH NOES, SENSIBLE CHILDREN!!!

  • its his ONE WEAKNESS!

  • @ThatMonsterMan Iwouldhavegottenawaywithitifitwasntforthosemeddlingkids.

  • This is so black metal.

  • This one's not that scary to me. But then I grew up in Florida where there are aligators in the fresh water and sharks in the salt water AND WE STILL JUMPED ON IN.

  • Darn British stereotypes crammed into my head. I expected him to throw off his cloak and bellow " I'm Old Greeegg!"

  • Pretty cool Info Film ! Should be more like it.

I think they would have to update it to kids recording it on their mobile phones rather than helping tho.

  • Boo hoo hoo. Mummy I'm scared.

  • i swear to God, this terrified me and gave me nightmares for years. It still gives me goosepimples when I hear it. It did it's job though. I never went near the river out the back of where we lived.

  • That was super creepy!

  • Remember kids: Be careful around water or DONALD PLEASANCE WILL KILL YOU!!!

  • Ha kids are stupid.

  • He's the Terminator!

    "I'll be back."

  • "Urgh what a orrible thing".

  • That's bloody disturbing.

  • So what's the moral of this story? Uh... Don't... Drown? K.

  • "Don't handle sticks near dark and lonely water".

  • Donald Pleasance voiceover.

    You gotta love the guy!

    Grim!

  • That kid at the start looked like benny green from grange hill

  • That's because it is.

  • Oh god, I'm afraid to even shower, now. D:

  • Lol I'm not afraid of water I'm scared of the ad, at least that's what I would have though if I were around at that time.. I'm off down the swamp for a swim, fancy coming? :P

  • Good lord, were they trying to traumatize kids? I'm 20 and it creeps me out.

  • That was odd.

  • It would seem sensible children are immune to the grim reaper, to bad I fail on both counts.

  • Well, that was disturbing.

  • H-Holy... one half of me is terrified, and the other half of me is respecting the voice actor for Death eternally.

  • you think you respect him now, he freaking shot Michael Myers!

  • He shot Michael Myers? I don't know what you mean.

  • the voice is Donald Pleasance who played Dr. Loomis in the original Halloween movies

He shoots Myers six times in the first one, a few more times in the second one and then blows himself up with Myers, and beats him with a stick in the fifth one

  • Oh, that was him? You're right, Mr. Pleasance is made of awesome. This is still my favorite thing he ever did, though... just that chilling voice...

  • Oh my.

  • Noo! Master mustn't follow the lights!

  • O_o

  • This PSA cut the drowning rate dramatically as the trauma of this thing made sure they were to busy blowing their guts out to get a chance.:)

  • Brilliant ad - really well filmed.

  • O______O

That was oddly awesome, yet horribly terrfying.

This rules out all the chances of me ever wanting to learn how to swim.

  • I wouldn't be worried about the dangerous water, more about the strange, quietly spoken man in dark clothing who lurks around places frequented by children. O_o

  • some chavvy kids in this "oi look theres someone in da waer"

  • Wow. That kid from the first death must have been one bad swimmer to fall in a body of water about as wide as the length of his arms. Maybe it was really a portal to Hell?

  • Maybe it was a sinkhole or something. I dunno, British PSA's are scary.

  • I don't know. How fast would he be sinking?

  • He was probably smuggling cannon-balls in his pockets.

  • ...

    What.

    The.

    Fuck.

  • Well, this would explain why so many British people I meet can't swim. They're terrified.

  • That voice was strangely hypnotic...

  • I'll be back. So now we know where Arnie stole his line. Even scarier than the Terminator - 1970s Britain!

  • The kids keep drowning because they're British. In an American PSA, GI Joe would show up at the last minute.

    GEEEE IIIIII JOOOOOOE

  • No, they keep drowning because they're all protagonists in old-fashioned platformer games. Just touching water = instant death.

Ooh! Or maybe all British people are witches!

  • no, witches floated. EVERYONE sank.

  • Why GI Joe? So he thinks it's perfectly alright for British children to drown, but he must save all-American children no matter what the danger?

  • And in the end, this PSA gets in a catfight with the Crying Indian PSA over showing throwing discarded clothing into a public pond as a positive thing.

  • Hee hee.

  • Sensible children? I have no power over them!

  • PYUUMAMAN!

  • Hey look, an egg! Oh, wait, it's the Grim Reaper.

  • LOL!

  • classic

  • wow, why is all the orginality goes into propaganda these days

  • Amazingly potent video! My favourite bit is the relish in the voice of Donald Pleasance when he says "It's the perfect place for an accident".

  • thats.. really scary.. if you showed that to kids now. they would crap there pants.

  • it sounds more scary than arney saying ill b back lol i remember it well

  • So... Don't drown?

  • Hmmm, sensible children, they don't get enough press.

  • Very chilling scared the bejesus out of me and I'm an atheist!

  • No doubt about it. Donald Pleasance had a creepy voice... O_O

  • STILL CREEPY!

  • So, wait, the British Government actually made PSAs about not drowning?

  • Don't worry about swimming in pools, kids! I'm the spirit of bright and cheerful water! The spirit of dark and lonely water can't get you in there.

  • How did that kid hang the jar on the branch?

  • Donald Pleasance hates these little common children with their estuary accents:

'Oy Look, vere's summan inna wa'er!'

  • "I'll be BACK - ack -ack " Brrr. If they still did public information films like this there'd be fewer accidents. But god forbid the kids get scared...

  • Best public information film ever.
