Get a netbook alternative that's about the same size, but faster!
Go raid ebay and look for an acer timeline AS1810T-8638, you'll find a 1.3ghz core 2 duo, x4500MHD for $350.
Now the frequency isn't important, it's dual cored, it has more cache than any atom and more importantly, it has a video card that has acceleration for Blu-ray and h.264, but I read it only worked in windows. (3 year old article, drivers change, to make sure, it's wise to ask users)
@commodore256 Looked over it. Certainly an interesting system. What I find baffling is that the hardware under the hood puts it outside of a netbook designation, yet the screen size would make one think that it is a netbook. I find that a little strange. LOL Great system though, thanks man. :)
I didn't think that most netbooks even came with a slot for a cd/dvd/blu-ray disc drive that and it a pain to get blu-ray working on the software side in linux. Oh and then there is the fact that a netbook is unlikely to support full 1080p playback
@Tips4n00bs True but your selections are few & far between, although I think I may have found one that can pull off HD video compatibility, and that is the Hercules eCAFE EX HD netbook. :)
Putting it on a windows netbook would be cheapest.. try the acer aspire one. Some of the cheapest, and I think they have good wireless support (but check ubuntus website first and see which ones are supported).
Great idea. I would recomend a nice, low cost netbook. While formatting the installed drive with Linux would likely void the warranty, it would almost be worth it. Look around a bit, and you can find some decent, no name netbooks for under $200 new!
what i do is ghost copy the hard drive and then save it for possible future use. I then put whatever i like on it. I could be in trouble going this route if the hard drive dies and i need factory help, but i chance it. I just hate Windows, mainly because it takes so long to shut down compared to linux distros
@johnnylifeson Hense my love for Linux. I had started a little bit on python, and want to get back into. However this is primarily a travel system, not intended for daily use. I have Mint on my Toshiba laptop for that. :)
I recommend getting something like a Dell Latitude D630, it's easy to carry around, 14 inch wide screen and fast. You could find one for under $200. Install Linux on go.
@IvanDos24 Linux is extremely light weight and power efficient, great for the low power hardware of a netbook. Plus, Linux is open source and immune to Windows viruses (which are the vast majority of viruses). Linux viruses are rare, and squelched quickly. Updates in Linux happen several times a week. Why? Since it's open, there is 24/7 development around the globe on it.
You may have to get one with windows preloaded simply because the only netbooks that can handle hi def video of any sort are AMD based ones. Unless you can find a cheap ION netbook.
mmm... is meego compatible with those pesky blu-rays? and also, a netbook can't handle fullhd, when I tested my old netbook (an acer aspire one) the only os that supported 720p was windows 7(and barely) not a single linux distro was even close to reproducing it smoothly (and no, I'm not making a commercial here, it's just what I saw here).
blu-ray is 1080p, so I doubt there's a netbook out there that can handle that, but if you can find one then you could then put your main distro in it
@emucosmos More importantly, is MeeGo equipped with a screen magnifier? That's the main question before we get into the whole bluray thing. I only have one bluray disk though. The market rents out DVDs and most of my movies i own are DVDs.
@rml695 after a little research it looks like it does have a screen magnifier, the problem is that it looks to be a little buggy, maybe it's fixed but who knows, when I had my netbook I first used moblin but when microsoft changed the msn protocol a lot of the moblin interface turned useless, so I changed to ubuntu netbook edition (not that unity thing) and It was quite cool, I even remember than that thing had a screen magnifier, get a copy of that edition and problem solved
@rml695 of course, but if you add some ppa's to the repositorys you're good to go, also, the last good netbook edition ubuntu launched was based in 10.04 LTS, so it still has 2 years left to be obsolete I think
Just install Ubuntu in a BETTER laptop or netbook like a i5 4 giga lenovo or a netbook with at least 2ghz cpu and 2 giga ram . lenovo g560 8 hours battery around 500 dollars a netbook 300 dollars . No installing UBUNTU do not avoid warranty since you can install it in dual boot or you could simply remove the existing HDD and install a Empty one and install ubuntu on it . No Avoiding warranty at all to change a HDD for an other. Thank you for reading . and I love all your video !!!!
@sattanhellsing makes a good gaming laptop but is linux compatiable with windows games? or windows download games becuase for me if not its a big draw back.
5 words fer u rml695- "I REALLY STILL want Meego! lol :D Good vid? Keep-em coming! (smiles :-)

@Hilariousity I'd just use a standard USB DVD drive. As far as HD playback? I did find one - the Hercules eCAFE SLIM HD.
rml695 7 months ago
Wouldn't buying a preexisting one be both cheaper because of not paying for a windows license on it.

@rml695 also a good choice! Great part is, they have all the hardware support of ubuntu as well.

Who would want a machine you can't program on??? Oh, right, people who can't program and don't care about being slaves to the corporate monopoly ..
