  • Outstanding! I will definitely share this with other musicians that I know that want to make it in the music industry. Nathan East is an phenomenal bass player. I love the advice that Lionel Richie and Quincy Jones said!

  • oh shit, Nathan East is one of the best love this guy

  • TONS OF RESPECT FOR LIONEL RICHIE!

  • as a guitarist i'd love to just jam with Nathan and Steve Jordan.

  • 11 people are B players

  • What a great video to have run into. I have twin boys (bass player & drummer) who aspire to be pro musicians & do studio work. Lionel's comments caught their attention as did the overall information about the A vs B player. Awesome words of advice.

  • Whats the title of the last song?

  • "Aptitude plus attitude determines altitude."

Who is that guy? That's the deepest thing I've ever heard.

  • @JimmyCheesenip He's Lionel Richie

  • Here is the man creating a magic with an instrument called a bass. The man with down to earth personality, and my favorite bassist. Great respect to you Nathan.

    Ron from Korea

  • whats the name of this song????? please

  • 4:57 neurons rocks

  • This reminds me of what Hal Blaine used to say of his team - the Wrecking Crew - that played on so many classics in his era of the sixties and seventies. Technique, musicianship, professionalism - just knowing how to be synergistic with other players to take a good song and make it great.

  • Very informative! Damn, I find it hard to learn my bass parts for my HS jazz band even though I get over a month to learn them before the concerts/gigs. But these guys have to do in a matter of minutes! Insane!

  • I don't necessarily agree with Lionel when he says 'How did that sound', for gods sake it's OK to ask that!

  • @maddermofo Oh.. I think I understand him. What I think is there are two ways to ask that.. Usually you are told what is expected of you in a session before you contribute so after playing through u ask 'how did that sound as in does it meet ur expectations for the song.. The other way to ask is more like getting approval from others in other words you're not confident in your playing enough to convince yourself you're doing well so u ask (with a sheepish grin) 'How did that sound?'.

  • True in all aspects.

  • who is the guitar player?

  • @Groovy26407 Michael Thompson

  • @dctw thx:)he is awesome:)

  • @dctw

michael thomson is very great guitarist ...

his sound and his feeling are really on top ...

  • Who are they recording for here?

  • Levar Burton?

  • great video, great advice for any working musician. making a living as a musician is almost impossible these days. being versatile and prepared is essential. otherwise, go join the 40 hour a week desk job crowd.

  • Isnt the guy on the keys the same guy who played for michael jackson on tour during BAD?

  • @henry14000 ohh yeh, the MD for both the Bad tour and the Dangerous tour... haha what a line up

  • I love Music but i HATE the Music bizzniz!

  • i met nathan east his really nice :D

  • Yeah man. 0:17 ... A Yamaha RBX John Myung Signature. ^^ GREAT

  • I totally agree with BirdlandBigBand - good luck in becoming "A" list session players in this day and age. As a former working sideman (as well as frontman) in my younger days, this kind of "professionalism" can often turn into humdrum, boring, and paint-by-numbers formulaic music. Little or no inspiration, just "chops" and cool " 'tude". - play the appropriate stuff for the particular musical style or walk. God bless cats like Sonny Sharrock who would play with Herbie Mann and blow it all up!

  • This would have been indispensable viewing...25 years ago. Now? If you think there are "A" and "B" levels and even C and D levels like there used to be, you are dreaming.

The era of the "session" is over. Recording, the majority of it, is now performed in producers home studios. The majority of big studios are gone. The legendary rooms in NYC are history

And while there will always be "sessions", and great players, the entire paradigm now is different. The business has changed, forever.

  • @BirdlandBigBand I couldn't agree more. Everyone is taking baby steps and shortcuts, and not even paying their dues to learn the craft about musicianship. My motto, 'Know thyself! You cannot know where your going, until you know where you came from!' True statement!

  • the most important thing he talked about, in my opinion, is the whole attitude thing. There's a lot of players I've played with in the studio and it's like they slime you when you walk in the door! no good! The studio should be about the music, not about one guy's ego and opinion. When there is trust in the studio, that's when the magic happens. That's why guys get invited back.

  • anybody knows where is this video taken from?

  • But real music is created by bands that have been

together for a while. Sure, people like Jeff Porcaro will

sound good doing anything anywhere, .. but most

musicains don't have all around studio skills and shouldn't.

  • Then again, should we take out all the "B" players and shoot them?

  • I really agree whole heartedly! This new era of talent have no clue about real music, from the classics to country. It's not easy, just as a baby has to crawl before it can walk so is the learning of music.

  • woah Red Baron in the beginning.

  • anyone know wat the name of the song starting at 2:10?

  • I love this session. Everything that was said, I hope to achieve. I am a player. I desire to play with and like these guys.

  • Awesome advice. Thanks, C7Black and Drew. I have two positive traits. I work hard and I have a great attitude. I am just lacking complete knowledge and skill on my instrument ,but I am getting better. One day, I might be on the "A" list.

  • Oh shit this was legendary

  • What's the name of the guy at 1:30?

  • @Mewsinghan Bob James

  • Wow! I played with three of those guys at the SAME TIME!! What a blessing. Thanx Greg.

  • What is the second track? It cooks !

  • Nice

  • anybody knows what the first song is???

  • @qbeo2912

"anybody knows what the first song is???"

Red Baron from Billy Cobham's 1973 album Spectrum

  • Where is this from? Is there a whole DVD? Let me know!!

  • piwinter

don't be such an ass. I know lots of musicians that are very successful. If you're frustrated with your fucked up life, stop talking like you're mr. ALL I KNOW.

  • sountracksband,

what do you know about anything? Are you even out of high school? I'm not bitter and my life is by no means "fucked up". This piece is an infomercial. Kids like you get filled up with helium about the great studio scene in L.A., but L.A. chews and spits out naive youngsters by the thousands... I know "very successful musicians" and others (in film, Lucas, Pixar) All I'm saying is don't be fooled by this "we're all friends, come join us" nonsense...

  • @piwinter No, you're bitter. No mistake about that.

  • Great advice and so valuable for all musicians to hear. Can't just have talent. Professionalism is key!

  • I apply all these same principles to my career as a National Chart Topping Jazz Guitarist. To make music full time at the pro level you need three things. 1. A good attitude. 2. A good work ethic. 3. Good knowledge and skill on your instrument. If you are missing any one of these... I think you get the idea.

This is what I tell artists how do not want to hear what I have to say. "Don't get bitter get better!" All of this is in our control Peace!

  • Clapton's best band ever is here: East, Phillinganes, Ferrone

  • great!!!

  • Such self-serving BS!! "Attitude, Aptitude, A-players", bla, bla, bla. While not wrong, its all about being the perfect 'slave'; the kind of crap they teach you at the MI and other "be all you can be" music schools. There's much less work out there than there used to be and the good old boys will not share it with anyone, period! Listen to this generic - and actually not creative - stuff they are playing here.

  • @piwinter It's not their business to be creative - when you are a session musician, you play what you're told you to.

  • Exactly my point! It's not creative, it's hard wok, it's putting up with lots of nonsense. And especially in L.A. it's all about "better me than you" plus a fake "we're all friends". It's cut-throat. How about putting that in this happy-hand video? No, thousands of kids are being fed this nonsense while the musicians union hall is full of unemployed, great and experienced session players who are starving for work (and had plenty of work in the past). But no, it's their "attitude"...

  • dang. you sound kinda bitter bro. how different is that from what's going on in washington? the republicans no that 'real people' will benefit from health care reform but they don' want to jeopardize their cash cows. wake up and smell reality.

  • Well said. Pearls of wisdom FOR FREE.

  • Steve Ferrone plays drums for Tom Petty

  • "aptitude plus attitude equals altitude"

Damn, I've got a great attitude but I'm thick as pig shit.

  • That guys wasn't that bad... not an ameteur.. though he wasn't that great either.. C list.. hahah ? What did this MacVaine say to cause so much anger dude?

  • A-lister cup the balls it seems...

  • Ladies and gents out there... these words are "scripture" ... as for the fact that there are "no lists"... tsk tsk tsk my friend... maybe there shouldn't be but with some of these producers & engineers they definitely have their favorites whatever the reason... get in where u fit in!

  • please, give me the title of the second song!

  • so much good information on this vid...

    thank you for the post!

  • jesus, it's like zappa's yo cats

  • Ouch - all the masters and some great advice too.

  • oyeee whit this guy you can play everything!!! he"s amaizing!!

  • You have a cool name man.

  • i would like to find this kind of instrumental funk/blues album they are recording, but too hard to find them.

if you know some, i would like their name

  • maaann, look for albums of "lee ritenour", also "spyro gyra" and "four play" (the bassist is nathan. great sound at all!

  • What is the

    A-list and B-list???

  • he's just seperating the exceptional from the average players, there aren't any such lists irl

  • Absolutely Amazing...

  • FOURPLAY !!!!

  • Phil Collins? What.

  • right. lol

  • he plays along with clapton

  • Man!! Great groove, great musicians!!

But what's the title of the second song they play?!!

  • I don't know how many times I have watched this vid. just awesome!

  • Damn.... I'll be happy when I can jam like this....

  • Session Musicians....the most underrated type of musician...most of the time the only way you find out about them is through word of mouth or the Album credits....

  • they're probably underrated because they usually do not show off their technical abilities or their real music abilities as opposed to someone who is in a band, because if your a session musician for pop groups and hip hop groups or singers

then forget it...you just have to play simple stuff

like the video said...whatever goes with the video

  • I beg to differ....especially for the R&B and Hip-hop scene...Have you seen Aaron Spears or Ronald Bruner Jr or George "Spanky" McCurdy play?

They're session and touring musicians and they kill all the time chops and all

  • You're right I have seen session players who do a great job in the recordings, but they're probably still underrated because they're playing with big names and those big names are usually Pop or R & B and what not.

And people who mostly listen to pop just want to hear the vocalist.

    You know what I mean?

The only people who could tell and are amazed by what the musicians are doing are ...well other fellow musicians who are already playing.

  • Very true you're right.....

  • This video should be mandatory in schools. So many musicians have NO clue about this, and those who do tend to also be very arrogant and ignorant about it aswell.

  • @C7Blackjack MY Dad is friends with nathan East he has played with alot of people even MIchael Jackson

  • @C7Blackjack Indeed!

  • absolute true.. thank you for this video ! the most musicians do not understand what it is. they play and do not listen to the other musicians.... I´ve seen it in over 800 shows i played. I had Bassplayer, absolut perfect in technic but NO groove and no interaction... than i had an beginner, he plays 2 years Bass and he just plays... He listen to me what i do and what the other musicians do, and it was perfect!

    That´s it !

  • word

  • you sad it!

  • This dude has been around forever and is one of the best session players around! He is on the credits of an amazing amount of well known artists' albums. Gotta give him his props!

  • Nathan i love the way you smile during charice performance, it took me awhile to finally put a name to that man playing bass behind charice... gotcha! Keep smiling it's so pure and priceless...

opening of the Letterman Digital Arts Center.

George Lucas & all his VIPs were touring the

new facility.I thanked him for his informative

video & the advice contained in the DVD.A true

    gold mine for any musician!

  • I love how the drummer is tapping on the drum cage to get Nathan's attention about midway through the video.

  • I have this DVD. THIS was so worth the money. It's amazing how much you catch with rewatching it.

  • @UK2AK Can you please provide me with the title of the full DVD? Already tnx!

  • @redinkaos

Nathan East: The Business of Bass (2004)

  • These are the people who deserve recognition. True talent and professionalism at it's finest.

  • All these great musicans have worked with Anita Baker on all of her Albums

  • Great to see 'A players' perform joyfully and listen to the beautiful music that comes out! Thanks for sharing this video!

  • Excelent musician.

  • i feel like b-list folks are the red-headed step children of the music business.

    D.T.G!!!

is gonna spit on a nathan record when he's out of d bb yard!!

    the contract is already signed

  • aye?

  • Nathan East, considero uma lenda. Pode ser contraditório os meus elogios com os baixistas, só que, cada um no seu estilo. Ninguém é 100% em tudo, cada um tem sua característica própria.

  • The guitarist looks like Joe Perry!!!Great, love Nathan East...

  • aptitude + attitude = altitude ... nice

  • thats a professional bassist for real.sight reading is a big advantage on any instrument.especially bass , and drums

  • Thanks for posting this video.. I'm sharing it with my rest of my band/team and my fellow musicians friends. I've learnt so much.. appreciate it!

    Love ya!

  • wat r the songs in this video. they are superb

  • Just reading the comments on weather channel music and calling it sterile. If you know these guys, you'll see that they play on all kinds of albums in all kinds of genre's Greg for instance is now playing with TOTO. they are the best at what they do...that is why they get paid the amounts of money they do. Yes...the weather channel needs music too, and they will pay for it.

  • damn right!!

  • Fantastic video! Thanks for sharing. Every word in this one is 100% true. I love this kind of stuff!

  • I love the way nathan plays, and he's an incredible session bassist. All that they explained in the video is true. You can be superman in your instrument, if you have the wrong attitude, you will be playing only in your garage.

  • Can't say i like nathan east all that much he's a skilled musician but i saw his bass clinic in vancouver last summer i was kind of disapointed in the way he was.

  • All these great musicans have worked with Anita Baker on all of her Albums

  • this is to true & this all aply to live also!!

    thanx

  • Now HE knows how to play the shit out of a bass guitar.

  • lol look at Nathan's face @ 2:11-2:14.

  • é DEMAIS!!!!!!!!!

  • Haha wow it's crazy to me how obviously great these musicians are, yet they make all of their money playing, *ahem* kinda cornball muzak. Just saying I can hear this music behind a commercial instead of being played in a concert hall/club. Not that they aren't great musicians or anything, and not without valid points, but the music is sterile.

  • I kind of agree. I mean these guys are top notch, the kind of guys that should be making innovative new music because of how easy music comes to them yet they are playing Weather Channel music. Seems a little crazy to me.

  • you do know they play in other bands right? Nathan East for instance plays with Eric Clapton.

  • Yes i do, and i love Clapton... nothing wrong with that. He's also in Herbie Hancock's band with Vinnie Colaiuta and a couple other monster players. Why not do something original though. If you have the ability to play anything you want, why not try something different. Not a huge bitch of mine just something i was thinking at the time.

  • oh, ok. I totally see where you're coming from, and it's a good point.

  • He Played at church's when he was ~15 or so...Dont know 4 sure the age..Man hes good.

  • Now that's what you call great music and musicians!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • why they baggin' on the b players so hard...we need work just as much as they do

  • This video should be played in every music school, college, the text printed in every music periodical!

  • every word is so true

  • so great! nathan east is really good, the way he express the notes through his bass guitar. i love music!

  • AMEN!! thats all I have to say. you gotta feel the music

  • This should be posted in stone,a lot of musicians just don't get it...in the studio it's all about supporting and not all about "ME".

  • bass ace

  • Nathan East is my favorite, thanks! Please post anything else you have of him!

  • every word here is so true great video :)

  • Amen!!
