On my school buses, the driver would always turn on the yellows, then, after the car stops, open the doors, thus turning on the red lights. I don't think its right to be so close to where you ahve to slam on your brakes.
I hate when bus drivers do this they like to put their reds on right while youre passing, and I know some would argue that you must stop when you see the yellows, but where i come from some bus drivers are dumb and they put their yellows on 50 seconds before the reds come out or they just pull over and use the yellows like hazard lights so if youre already passing a school bus and they put the stop sign out while youre halfway by the bus then youre supposed to lock it down and skid to a stop?!

If I were a cop and saw this behavior on the streets I would stop, give these so called "officers" and the bus driver a citation for reckless driving for putting stop signs on peoples faces and trying to cause an accident. Hell I would take it all the way to the Supreme Court if I had to.

The lights the come on before the bus stops are caution lights, and used for many purposes, and you are suppose to slow and use caution, like with FLASHING yellow lights.(Not solid yellow lights)

The bus driver and parents are responsible for teaching the kids to be safe as well.

@inad316 The oncoming cars have no time to stop, otherwise it would require them to slam the breaks. The secondary line of traffic however does have time to stop, and they are required too. Its a legit concern because if you have TIME to stop and you CHOOSE not too, then you are CHOOSING to disobey the law. Oncoming cars cannot stop, but the secondary cars behind can. Remember these guys dont make the laws, they enforce it. If you dont like the law you should vote to change it.

(Thus why the yellow then red) If the yellow is "rushed" this giving a short yellow then red, If the car breaks the "plain" before red, even IF just the bumper it's not considered running the light. I kinda agree with this but disagree as well. Most buses display yellow signals while getting ready to stop and that's when I start slowing down to come to a stop. I'm usually always stopped before the red comes on. Having a bus driver that is having the most exciting day of her life is probably trying extra hard to set people up to pass isn't the best idea. What can you do about it?

Oh I see.. in the video, I thought that the sign is displayed at the same time as the door is open. Because the black car was approaching fast and I thought the cops were just trying to catch the driver out.
This is a stupid way to catch people passing schoolbuses. It's more likely they'd cause a crash by braking so suddenly than they would just going through... It takes like 5 seconds from the time the stopsign goes out till the kid is at the door ready to get off the bus anyway, its not like passing the bus as it suddenly sticks out its stopsign is going to harm any children.
Just for the record, the red lights and stop sign on the bus are displayed LONG before the bus stops to prevent people from slamming the brakes. Drivers just refuse to stop, or aren't paying attention.

In addition to that, amber lights are flashed a good amount of time before the red ones are to warn oncoming traffic that the red lights will be displayed with the stop sign too. These are visible from pretty far away, even during the day time.
@mike8055 we use amber warning lights 500 feet from the stop any car approaching the bus knows when they see the amber lights we are going to be stopping they are also called Jersey lights as this was the first state to use them.

@OriginalChev- Usually in areas like this they put the stop sign out first before stopping completly because of people trying to make it though when it goes out....confusing. Put it like a yellow light thats about to turn red. Lets say the stop is 10yards away she will put the stop sign out (These a sign that comes out on the driver side) giving people the warning to stop.

You can tell all of the people who don't know how to drive or have never driven. As a school bus approaches it's stop, the lights come on, yellow flashing lights always mean approach with caution, slow down and prepare to stop. Red lights always mean stop. It's also a built in fail safe, a school bus cannot pull that door latch without the lights coming on.

even in states that don't have the amber's all of these drivers had plenty of time to stop the lights are activated 100 or more feet away from the stop. On all buses a set of lights maybe Amber or red that come on warning that the bus is going to stop.

The stop sign isn't extended until the driver moves the lever to open the door. Alot of those drivers don't have time to stop. Whenever the bus puts on it's brakes, like slowing down in traffic or something, their yellow lights flash. I have seen someone pulled over after they were driving in their lane on a one way street, the bus's yellow lights were flashing because the bus was slowing down, and the car just kept going at a normal speed, thereby passing the bus while the bus slowed down.

School Busses have Amber lights that are displayed a good distance before the lights switch to red, and the Stop sign extends. There is plenty of time to stop if a driver is going the speed limit.

I am a little confused though. Does the stop sign mean stop or does the bus slowing down mean stop..... Looks like they were popping that level just as cars passed. @durand001 most buses have a set of flashing amber (can be other colors too) lights that come on prior to the red lights to warn drivers that the bus will be stopping in advance much like a set of traffic lights, regulations are different everywhere and seeing that this bus is older, it might not be equipped with an 8 light system in which case, depending on regs, the driver is to activate their 4ways to warn other motorists.

Also, by the way, the bus lights work like any other street light. (Thus why the yellow then red) If the yellow is "rushed" this giving a short yellow then red, If the car breaks the "plain" before red, even IF just the bumper it's not considered running the light. At least in texas. These guys are clearly pulling a quick stop to catch them off guard. it takes at LEAST one second for people to even notice. I kinda agree with this but disagree as well. Most buses display yellow signals while getting ready to stop and that's when I start slowing down to come to a stop. I'm usually always stopped before the red comes on. Having a bus driver that is having the most exciting day of her life is probably trying extra hard to set people up to pass isn't the best idea. What can you do about it?

This is a stupid way to catch people passing schoolbuses. It's more likely they'd cause a crash by braking so suddenly than they would just going through... It takes like 5 seconds from the time the stopsign goes out till the kid is at the door ready to get off the bus anyway, its not like passing the bus as it suddenly sticks out its stopsign is going to harm any children.

@mike8055 Hey, I'm from the states. I agree, that wouldn't seem fair, but like BoxerTwoZero says, the red lights and stop sign are displayed a good amount of time before the bus stops. In addition to that, amber lights are flashed a good amount of time before the red ones are to warn oncoming traffic that the red lights will be displayed with the stop sign too. These are visible from pretty far away, even during the day time.

Put it like a yellow light thats about to turn red. You can tell all of the people who don't know how to drive or have never driven. As a school bus approaches it's stop, the lights come on, yellow flashing lights always mean approach with caution, slow down and prepare to stop. Red lights always mean stop. It's also a built in fail safe, a school bus cannot pull that door latch without the lights coming on.

They didn't do anything to "get" people to break the law, they were just there to cite them when they did. The stop sign isn't extended until the driver moves the lever to open the door. Alot of those drivers don't have time to stop. Whenever the bus puts on it's brakes, like slowing down in traffic or something, their yellow lights flash. I have seen someone pulled over after they were driving in their lane on a one way street, the bus's yellow lights were flashing because the bus was slowing down, and the car just kept going at a normal speed, thereby passing the bus while the bus slowed down.

@durand001 most buses have a set of flashing amber (can be other colors too) lights that come on prior to the red lights to warn drivers that the bus will be stopping in advance much like a set of traffic lights, regulations are different everywhere and seeing that this bus is older, it might not be equipped with an 8 light system in which case, depending on regs, the driver is to activate their 4ways to warn other motorists.
