@SECRy dotted eight notes = 3 16th note blocks. You'll this does not fit in to a 4/4 time signature. Dotted 8ths fit well in to other time signatures - try changing the number of beats to 3 (upper left of the step sequencer.) Time signatures in electronic music software apps differ a bit from traditional music theory though - it can be a subject of heated debate. The study of time signatures can get ridiculous, but with electronic music you can have Impossible rhythms - no rules.
Thank you .I have a question for you. When working with a triple staff, where a two treble clef consist off a melody and chord progression, respectively, and G clef consist of a bass note( which is the first note of that particular chord),How do I place the notes on the piano roll. I know that C5 splits the piano keys between bass clef and treble.I just don't know which octave I should use on fl studio from the music sheet.
@mDubzSex2MyEars middle c=c5 in fl studio and this is the same for cakewalk, but some music apps use c4. There is more to consider though. Most synth instruments are not pitched to standard octaves either. So middle C for a bass synth might be c3 or even c2 for sub base by default. The pitch is almost always right, but to deal with octaves, it's best to rely on your ear rather than what you see.
@SaintReverb No - the ppq adjusts the divisions per quarter, the FL zoom does not change that. It's something that you hardly ever need to worry about any more. The only time is if you decide you need 128th notes ( but that is a bit ridiculus). When I created this tutorial - the zoom in FL Studio was determined by the PPQ - now it's different, you really don't have to change the PPQ at all.
You don't NEED to learn music theroy par say, some aren't talking "Beyond the basics" , you can learn by a experimental basis on trial and error, and what sounds good to the ear. However this can lead to a loss of intrest in the creation of music due to the simple fact, you've heard most of it before, which I have experienced in the making of anything in the electronica genre. It also gets old for any other genre, so expanding your knowledge is better than self taught.
I should qualify myself. What I mean is that I can no longer change the timing of my projects. I'm stuck in 1/4 beat timing, and I can't create dotted notes.
@markgray1109, Hi i would recommend a series of about 50 videos on you tube, I think entitled "learn music theory free.". this is way more than the basics and is done quite well, my only criticism is that the drawings are sometimes unclear but the information is sound. another thing to point out. these videos do not refer to FL studio as the person presenting these lessons is a classical musician by procession but don't let that put you off. good luck with your musical journey.

Can you make a tutorial on more advanced theory? Even if i dont need it i wouldnt mind learning it.. I see what chords are, and note lengths, and i know the scales and abouts 5ths and all that good stuff, but i still have a problem seeing the big picture of how it all goes together to sound nice
thanks a lot man, that really helped. Though I knew all the theory part of it the piano roll tips were really helpful! I always used to double the tempo in order to get 32nd notes in the piano roll, so this really helps!D

Thanks for showing a simple way to fix the notes snapping too long (slicing the end of the quarter note). this used to bug me so much. I used to have to resort to turning off the snap altogether and fixing the length manually. Ur a lifesaver man. Thanx!!

ste1438 you are the truth with these tutorials. i do question, when sampling using fl studio could you totally separate the words in a song from the music?
Another way to fix long notes after changing time is you can double click the note and set the note to 1 bar then click accept and resize ur not normally. just thought i would add that hehe.
@vipersrules its bullshit, yesterday i was watching a video 37 minutes long, and youtube stopped my video at 12 minutes just to give me an ad?! fuck youtube and stupid ads...
@vipersrules Firefox users dont be stupid and watch this reclame. Just install a plugin called adblokplus Watch those great tutorials without reclame!
@vipersrules I hate the ads too, but that annoyance keeps YouTube free. It supports my efforts here too. Maybe some people would want to pay a monthly fee for "ad-free" YouTube. I'm not sure that I hate the ads that much though.
@ste1438 As long as your getting a cut i dont mind, but the "keeping youtube free" is way overused. What happened to the old youtube? How did it manage to survive with basically no ads? It sounds more as greedy corporations to me.
Well as long as the uploaders with all the good content get paid big bucks im fine, but i really hope its a large percentage.
@vipersrules the videos comes free to you so what do you think? and the pple wants to spread the products to the world, why cant put the ads on videos? do u think people dont need money, maybe like u have no bill to pay, nothing to do dad do all for u. wake up bro one day u will have to find a way to make money too.
@TheHouseFiend so what? they put ads on utube vids that arent partnered so people are profiting off your videos, do you not realize the stupidity in that?
id rather have side bar ads than ads on my fucking video and not promoting people i subscribe to
anyone working with any kind of music needs music theory for sure! just saying.....

I see many people complaining about the prevalence of youtube's ads,
the simple solution is AdBlock plus
just search it up in google and it is available for just about every popular browser, gets rid of the before video, sidebar and ALL other ads.
Cheers.
