  • anyone working with any kind of music needs music theory for sure! just saying.....

  • how many notes per bar is a dotted 8th note?

  • @SECRy dotted eight notes = 3 16th note blocks. You'll this does not fit in to a 4/4 time signature. Dotted 8ths fit well in to other time signatures - try changing the number of beats to 3 (upper left of the step sequencer.) Time signatures in electronic music software apps differ a bit from traditional music theory though - it can be a subject of heated debate. The study of time signatures can get ridiculous, but with electronic music you can have Impossible rhythms - no rules.

  • @ste1438 thanks! these videos are a blessing (:

  • Thank you .I have a question for you. When working with a triple staff, where a two treble clef consist off a melody and chord progression, respectively, and G clef consist of a bass note( which is the first note of that particular chord),How do I place the notes on the piano roll. I know that C5 splits the piano keys between bass clef and treble.I just don't know which octave I should use on fl studio from the music sheet.

  • @mDubzSex2MyEars middle c=c5 in fl studio and this is the same for cakewalk, but some music apps use c4. There is more to consider though. Most synth instruments are not pitched to standard octaves either. So middle C for a bass synth might be c3 or even c2 for sub base by default. The pitch is almost always right, but to deal with octaves, it's best to rely on your ear rather than what you see.

  • FL Studio is the best! Get some samples on my vids!

  • Is changing the PPQ the same thing as zooming in?

  • @SaintReverb No - the ppq adjusts the divisions per quarter, the FL zoom does not change that. It's something that you hardly ever need to worry about any more. The only time is if you decide you need 128th notes ( but that is a bit ridiculus). When I created this tutorial - the zoom in FL Studio was determined by the PPQ - now it's different, you really don't have to change the PPQ at all.

  • @ste1438 Thanks!

  • You don't NEED to learn music theroy par say, some aren't talking "Beyond the basics" , you can learn by a experimental basis on trial and error, and what sounds good to the ear. However this can lead to a loss of intrest in the creation of music due to the simple fact, you've heard most of it before, which I have experienced in the making of anything in the electronica genre. It also gets old for any other genre, so expanding your knowledge is better than self taught.

  • thank you for upload!

  • I should qualify myself. What I mean is that I can no longer change the timing of my projects. I'm stuck in 1/4 beat timing, and I can't create dotted notes.

  • Hey Ste, for some reason I can no longer change my note lengths you have any suggestions? It's becoming problematic.

  • I... give up... this just isnt for me

  • you dont need music theory lol thats stupid

    of course you do

    people be trolling

  • 18:28 - "And in the next tutorial I'm gonna talk about.. some bitch". Great tutorial! :)

  • Just a little friendly advice, you should link to part 2 in the description or an annotation.

It's a lot of work but it helps :)

  • @markgray1109, Hi i would recommend a series of about 50 videos on you tube, I think entitled "learn music theory free.". this is way more than the basics and is done quite well, my only criticism is that the drawings are sometimes unclear but the information is sound. another thing to point out. these videos do not refer to FL studio as the person presenting these lessons is a classical musician by procession but don't let that put you off. good luck with your musical journey.

  • Can you make a tutorial on more advanced theory? Even if i dont need it i wouldnt mind learning it.. I see what chords are, and note lengths, and i know the scales and abouts 5ths and all that good stuff, but i still have a problem seeing the big picture of how it all goes together to sound nice

  • Thanks a lot mate. Good job

  • thanks a lot man, that really helped. Though I knew all the theory part of it the piano roll tips were really helpful! I always used to double the tempo in order to get 32nd notes in the piano roll, so this really helps!D

  • yo i just started making beats and in less then a week i have become alot better thanx to your videos ur a great guy and thanx for all you help

  • Yo ste1438 I live in Jamaica and your tutorials are the best!! We would say "Dem MHAAAD!!" but i must say alot of thx

  • ahhhh duuude thank you soo much! 6 stars.

  • subbed. thank you so much

  • Thanks for showing a simple way to fix the notes snapping too long (slicing the end of the quarter note). this used to bug me so much. I used to have to resort to turning off the snap altogether and fixing the length manually. Ur a lifesaver man. Thanx!!

  • Greatings from Portugal

    Keep on!

  • gud video!

  • I feel like I'm gonna give Beethoven a run for his money after finishing your tutorials. Awesome stuff. lol

  • IT Job Nelson, IT Job...GWARDYAK(DOT)COM (Live Music Theory Classes) Beyond FL Studio into the world of complete music production and songwriting..oh and its free to join! IT Job Nelson...

  • nice video, music education is a must!!!

  • Your voice is like a glass of ice cold lemonade on a hot summers day.

  • Pretty helpful, thank you.

  • @TheSoundSuppressors not going to because my favorite tutorials come from youtube

    (no one has changed yet)

    but hopefully they will and i can happily move on (;

  • @TheSoundSuppressors youtube isnt the only vid side out there...

and now i wouldn't say it's the best anymore with all these adds

  • Another great and detailed video.

  • thank u

  • ste1438 you are the truth with these tutorials. i do question, when sampling using fl studio could you totally separate the words in a song from the music?

  • @TheDaomenien i get hardly ads wat so ever

  • Thank you.. learned a lot here.

  • @TheSoundSuppressors Yeah, but if you think about it...

Let's say you make a popular video...

    Youtube advertises off that...

You don't make any money... They do...

I rather them have ads on the sides than do ads in youtube videos..

    That's just irritating..

  • This was really helpful...I was having problems getting my notes to snap right into the piano roll...this is exactly what I was looking for! Thanks!

  • thanks a lot . appreciate ur time and effort .

  • Thank you sir. super as usual. Waiting for the pitch lesson so keenly! :D

  • thx very helpful can u make a tut on recording in the pattern a.k.a for fl studio fruity edition users lol

  • Really Really good, just what i needed to make some basslines, leads for producing ! :D

  • Another way to fix long notes after changing time is you can double click the note and set the note to 1 bar then click accept and resize ur not normally. just thought i would add that hehe.

  • good tutorials :D

  • fuck youtube is forcing long ads on us... and we cant refresh the page to get rid of it... ugh ...

thanks for the vid btw very informative

  • @vipersrules its bullshit, yesterday i was watching a video 37 minutes long, and youtube stopped my video at 12 minutes just to give me an ad?! fuck youtube and stupid ads...

  • @insecurepiano totally agree with you man; they need to change... they can advertise somewhere else... and not stop the videos

  • @vipersrules I use Firefox with ABP and Noscript and I do not get any ads on youtube but in IE OMFG. :(

  • @vipersrules Firefox users dont be stupid and watch this reclame. Just install a plugin called adblokplus Watch those great tutorials without reclame!

  • @vipersrules press f5

  • @vipersrules firefox + adblock plus = no ads

  • @wasguan yeah i know, i said that 2 months ago, using that now :P

  • @vipersrules congratulations

  • @vipersrules I hate the ads too, but that annoyance keeps YouTube free. It supports my efforts here too. Maybe some people would want to pay a monthly fee for "ad-free" YouTube. I'm not sure that I hate the ads that much though.

  • @ste1438 dont you get paid for ads

  • @ste1438 As long as your getting a cut i dont mind, but the "keeping youtube free" is way overused. What happened to the old youtube? How did it manage to survive with basically no ads? It sounds more as greedy corporations to me.

Well as long as the uploaders with all the good content get paid big bucks im fine, but i really hope its a large percentage.

  • @ste1438 Awesome video, really helped with learning how to read music.

I see many people complaining about the prevalence of youtube's ads,

the simple solution is AdBlock plus

just search it up in google and it is available for just about every popular browser, gets rid of the before video, sidebar and ALL other ads.

    Cheers.

  • @vipersrules if u use firefox or google chrome, u can download an addon or extension to block ads, they r called AdBlocker

u will never see another youtube ad again

  • @vipersrules the videos comes free to you so what do you think? and the pple wants to spread the products to the world, why cant put the ads on videos? do u think people dont need money, maybe like u have no bill to pay, nothing to do dad do all for u. wake up bro one day u will have to find a way to make money too.

  • @vipersrules Your getting free education, and yr complaining about having to watch an advert which you can skip after 5 seconds or so....

p.s. ste1438 your tutorials are awesome! best teacher ive ever had and your only on a video! :)

  • @TheHouseFiend so what? they put ads on utube vids that arent partnered so people are profiting off your videos, do you not realize the stupidity in that?

id rather have side bar ads than ads on my fucking video and not promoting people i subscribe to

  • Music theory is important :) well done for making this clear, not enough people realise this in today's music world.
