Like if your goal in life was to be a world class Olympic athlete, but in a freakish turn of events, lost your arms and legs you would be beyond pissed. We'll never know if Guts or the Spartans were stronger because they would have gotten along too well. Both lived by a code that said bravery and a beautiful death are more preferable to mere survival. Guts and the Spartans could have lived easy lives and not have raised a weapon against demons or Persians. Instead, they both chose to fight. They both live admirable, superior lives. You guys now that.

I wouldn't go as far as to say mandatory. From what I've read, it was strictly forbidden for a spartan soldier to have sex with an aprentice and punishable by exile (they would both be exiled). And then there was that historian (an Athenian?), his name escapes me, who said one would not find adulterers in Sparta.

Then again, it is ancient Greece we're talking about. Certainly, the free men very often did engage in homosexual endeavours.
