I've bought a coldheat before and they really do suck... couldn't get it to work. I have both a pencil and a pistol, but i only use the pencil. Pistol is in the box it came in... 50 years ago.
He is absolutely correct cold heat irons suck...mine coulden't melt the thinnest wire I had, and they burn out in like 10 seconds. They are not good for any job so don't buy them.
I have had a few irons over the years the ones with temp control or the cheaper version all they are is a light dimmer and a iron they are a wast of money ether pay more and get a better tool or build a controller that controls the current going to the iron .I made one and it dose work very well plus no more burn tips b/c the iron stays at the proper temp not just wide open .
I think you might have trouble calibrating your temperature controller. I don't think a lot of people have high temperature thermocouples that they can use for calibration.

Can I ask what size & angle the pencil/angle tip point is ? I can get 3mm to 0.5mm tips at either 45 or 60 degrees.
I intend to use it for PCB through component ONLY not surface mount so Iassume needle is only used there.
